Perhaps Iran needs two proxy wars to drain its resources. I wish this perpetual war business would end.

Currency in Lebanon has lost 50% of its value.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/r...spair-n1195056

The national currency has lost more than 50 percent of its value, and banks have imposed crippling capital controls amid a liquidity crunch. But it appeared to be in a free fall over the last few days, selling as low as 4,000 Lebanese pounds to the dollar on the parallel market, down from a fixed peg of 1,500 pounds to the dollar in place for 30 years.

    Update:

    https://lasvegassun.com/news/2020/ju...efuse-to-help/

BEIRUT — Facing a worsening economic crisis and with little chance of Western or oil-rich Arab countries providing assistance without substantial reforms, Lebanon’s cash-strapped government is looking east, hoping to secure investments from China that could bring relief.

But help from Beijing risks alienating the United States, which has suggested such a move could come at the cost of Lebanese-U.S. ties.

A tiny nation of 5 million on a strategic Mediterranean crossroads between Asia and Europe, Lebanon has long been a site where rivalries between Iran and Saudi Arabia have played out. Now, it's becoming a focus of escalating tensions between China and the West.

In recent months, the Lebanese pound has lost around 80% of its value against the dollar, prices have soared uncontrollably, and much of its middle class has been plunged into poverty. Talks with the International Monetary Fund for a bailout have faltered, and international donors have refused to unlock $11 billion pledged in 2018, pending major economic reforms and anti-corruption measures.

Left with few choices, Prime Minister Hassan Diab’s government — supported by the Iran-backed Hezbollah and its allies — is seeking help from China, an approach that the Shiite militant group strongly supports.

    He is walking a tightrope.

A UN-backed court has found a member of the militant group Hezbollah guilty of involvement in the assassination of former Lebanese PM Rafik Hariri.

Judges at the Netherlands-based Special Tribunal for Lebanon said Salim Ayyash had a central role in the bomb attack in Beirut in 2005 that killed Hariri.

They acquitted three other defendants, who like Ayyash were tried in absentia.

Hezbollah denied any involvement, and the judges said no evidence implicated the Shia militant group's leaders.

Hariri's son Saad, who is himself a former prime minister, told reporters outside the court: "I think today everybody's expectation was much higher than what came out, but I believe the tribunal came out with a verdict that is satisfying and we accept it."

Lebanon's central bank governor warned in an interview published Tuesday that the bank cannot continue using its foreign currency reserves to finance trade, signaling he may soon be unable to sustain subsidies on basic goods.

In an interview with the French edition of the Saudi-owned Arab News, Riad Salameh said the central bank “is not the state” and cannot be blamed for everything.

“We have laid out the situation well in advance. Let those in charge take the necessary measures,” he said in the interview.

Salameh said once the bank reaches the minimum threshold of these reserves, it will be forced to stop funding subsidies.

The bank is believed to have around $18 billion in foreign currency reserves — down from $20 billion in April — which it has been using to support basic imports of fuel, wheat and medicine at a stable price after the currency collapse. Reports have suggested Salameh informed the government it would need to stop this support when reserves reach $17.5 billion.

    Yup.

The government already resigned because of riots, just wait until the subsidies stop and see what happens.

    Found an answer:

    Lebanon has three months left.

    https://www.jpost.com/middle-east/le...-months-639361

Lebanon's central bank will only subsidize fuel, wheat and medicine for three more months, an official source said on Thursday, as critically low foreign currency reserves dwindle.
A central bank official was not immediately available for comment, and the caretaker economy minister referred questions on the matter to the central bank.

Lebanon's prime minister-designate quit on Saturday (September 26) after trying for almost a month to line up a non-partisan cabinet.

His resignation deals a blow to a French bid aimed at rallying sectarian leaders to tackle the worst crisis since the nation's 1975-1990 civil war.

Mustapha Adib, former ambassador to Berlin, was picked on Aug. 31 to form a cabinet after President Emmanuel Macron's intervention secured a consensus on naming him in a country where power is shared out between Muslims and Christians.

A source close to Macron said the situation that led to Adib's resignation amounted to "collective betrayal" by political parties but said France, the former colonial power, would not abandon Lebanon.

Under the French roadmap, the new government would take swift steps to tackle corruption and implement reforms needed to trigger billions of dollars of international aid to fix an economy that's been crushed by a mountain of debt.

Lebanon faced a further knock when a huge explosion on Aug. 4 at Beirut port ruined a swathe of the capital.

Adib, a Sunni Muslim under the sectarian power-sharing system, announced he was stepping down but said Lebanon must not abandon the French plan or squander Macron's goodwill.

Lebanon's people line up in 'queues of humiliation' as their country unravels

Fill ’er up? Be ready to wait in line at least an hour — assuming the gas station is open, that is.

Need medication? Something as basic as aspirin could set you on a daylong hunt from pharmacy to pharmacy.

Even a grocery run is an ever-accelerating race against ballooning prices and a failing currency. And whatever you do, you’ll need to time it around power cuts that can last up to 23 hours a day.

This is life in Lebanon these days, where a 21-month-long, government-engineered economic implosion — the World Bank calls it “a deliberate depression” — has transformed everyday tasks into a gantlet of fuel, power, water, medicine and basic goods shortages that residents dub tawabeer al-thul, or “queues of humiliation.”

Those lines stretched long this week as the country geared up to celebrate Eid al-Adha, a festival during which Muslims sacrifice a sheep to commemorate Abraham almost sacrificing his son Ismail at God’s command. With the Lebanese lira's street value down to less than 10% of its official value against the dollar, it’s a ritual few can afford.

Behind Lebanon's financial crisis is a power-sharing political system that in 1990 corralled the country's dizzying mix of sects and loyalties into ending the 15-year civil war. But it turned governance into a patronage game: Instead of rebuilding the country’s ravaged infrastructure, warlords-turned-statesmen used ministries as personal piggy banks to hand out favors to their allies.

The international community spoke vaguely of corruption but continued to pour aid into Lebanon with little regard for how it was spent. Girding everything was a once-inviolable currency peg that kept the lira at 1,507.50 to the greenback.

Major armed clashes erupted in the middle of Beirut on Thursday amid large-scale protests related to the ongoing Beirut port blast investigation. At least six Lebanese were reported killed, along with 30 others wounded in clashes between rival factions reportedly lasting up to four hours.

Shocking footage outside the Beirut Palace of Justice and surrounding central neighborhoods included crowds dodging sniper fire from above, and gunmen gathered in "fronts" shooting into 'enemy' positions across streets, in scenes reminiscent of the Lebanese Civil War that gripped the country from 1975 to 1990.

The violence involved Shia groups Hezbollah and Amal, clashing with the "LF" (or Lebanese Forces), which is a Christian political party staunchly opposed to Iran-bakced Hezbollah. According to regional reporting, a Hezbollah-Amal statement in the aftermath blamed the LF for the deadly mayhem as they "fired sniper shots with the aim to kill."

Hezbollah and Amal (both historically concentrated in Lebanon's south) urged the national army "to intervene quickly to stop these criminals."

Stunning video shows sniper fire from an unknown location in a building ring out over panicked crowds in broad daylight. However, LF leader Samir Geagea rejected the charge, blaming the violence instead on the "widespread proliferation of arms" in reference to Hezbollah and its well-known huge arsenal of weapons under its command.

Sniper fire rang out over crowds of thousands who were calling for the removal of Judge Tarek Bitar gathered in front of the Justice building.

According to the Beirut-based independent outlet The Cradle, the protest "was organized to demand the removal of US-backed Judge Tariq Bitar, who was set to accuse Hezbollah and its allies of playing a role in the Beirut Port explosion."

Into the evening hours, the national army is said to be in control of the streets as each side continues to trade blame.

Messages circulated on the internet of local schools urgently telling parents and children to stay home amid fears the violence would spread to other parts of the city.

Indeed the Lebanese capital is still on edge, also amid recent lengthy power outages, food and fuel shortages, and runaway inflation and a collapsed economy - all of which have made daily life miserable.

Al Jazeera reports that at least nine people have been arrested, including one Syrian - though it's clear from recent footage to emerge that literally hundreds were seen rushing to front lines as automatic gunfire rang out.

Concerns that fighting may spread to neighboring areas with reports of gunmen trying to get into #AinelRummameh - This was one part of the historic green line that split #beirut during #Lebanon ‘s long civil war #لبنان #لبنان_ينهار #بيروت pic.twitter.com/x1QVegUwga
    — Maha Yahya (@mahamyahya) October 14, 2021

Ironically, the start of the fighting occurred precisely where the historic 15-year long civil war began, sparking fears that the country could be on the brink of another one:

Local reports and video footage indicated that the unarmed demonstrators in Tayouneh neighborhood were ambushed by gunmen, whom the protesters believe to be from the Lebanese Forces (LF) party positioned on the rooftops of buildings in the adjacent Ein el-Remmaneh neighborhood.

Ein el-Remmaneh – bordering the LF-held Furn el-Shebbak and Tayouneh, which has supporters from both the LF and Amal – is an LF stronghold where the 15-year-long Lebanese Civil War was sparked in 1975 in an attack on a bus that killed 22 Palestinians.

Indeed a statement from Prime Minister Najib Miqati urged immediate calm and warned the country could be "dragged into civil strife" if the rival factions involved don't immediately cease.
