In a curious turn of events, a number of major news organizations ran corrections Wednesday night over week-old reports that sparked a testy war of words between Hillary Clinton and Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard.
Last week, a number of media organizations, including the New York Times, CNN and Politico, ran reports saying Clinton told the podcast “Campaign HQ with David Plouffe” that Russians were “grooming” a female Democratic candidate — widely assumed to be Gabbard — for a third-party run to play a potential spoiler in the 2020 election.
But apparently Clinton meant Republicans — not Russians — were doing the grooming.

Tulsi Gabbard is getting a boost from conservatives online

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard has received the biggest surge of all 2020 Democratic contenders in social media mentions by percentage increase between Oct. 8 and Oct. 15 according to social intelligence company Storyful.

Why it matters: It's another example of a 2020 Democrat experiencing a boost online thanks in part to fringe voices on the right. Earlier this year, Axios reported on ways far-right voices were helping to elevate Andrew Yang.

• The increase can be attributed to Gabbard's accusations that the Democratic Party had rigged the elections, which gained a lot of attention on the far-right, and her threat to boycott the last debate.

By the numbers: Gabbard went from receiving 162,500 mentions across many social platforms measured by Storyful (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, Gab, 4Chan) in the first week of October to over 338,000 between Oct. 8 and 15.

• Comments by Gabbard condemning members of her own party have garnered her lots of attention from far-right figures, which explains some of the increased attention she is receiving on platforms like Reddit, 4chan and Gab.
• For example, here's an example of a chain started about it on the pro-Trump Reddit Channel "r/DrainTheSwamp."

Tulsi Gabbard doesn't qualify for Iowa Democrats' event

Washington (CNN) Rep. Tulsi Gabbard did not meet the threshold to speak at Friday's Iowa Democratic Party Liberty and Justice Celebration, which is expected to be attended by 14 other Democratic presidential candidates.

To qualify for the event, candidates could either open at least two field offices in the state with at least 10 dedicated field organizing staff or buy the Iowa Democratic Party's voter file, according to Jonah Hermann, the spokesman for the state Democratic Party. A voter file is a digital database of official, publicly available government records of who is registered to vote and who voted in past elections.

"To our knowledge," Hermann said, "the congresswoman did neither of those things."
CNN has reached out to the Gabbard campaign for comment.
The event in Des Moines is described as the "premier event of the caucus season" by the Iowa Democratic Party. Iowa is a key early-voting state, and its first-in-the-nation caucuses will take place on February 3.
