British holidaymakers 'traumatised' after arrest at US border

    https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-50050467

A British couple say they have been detained in the US after accidentally crossing the border from Canada.

David Connors, 30, and his wife Eileen, 24, say they are being held in Pennsylvania with their three-month-old baby and are "traumatised".

They say they were driving with family members on 3 October when, to avoid an animal, they veered onto a small road.

A police officer then pulled them over, told them they were in the US state of Washington and arrested them.

The couple have detailed the "scariest experience of our entire lives" in a sworn statement that was provided to BBC News by their lawyer.

The family statement is the basis for a legal complaint lodged by their lawyer with the US Department of Homeland Security inspector general.

US immigration authorities confirmed to the BBC that the couple were being held, but denied their allegations of mistreatment.

    Where were they taken?

The family's attorney, Bridget Cambria, of Aldea - the People's Justice Center, said the couple were driving south of Vancouver on 3 October when they took a detour to avoid an animal on the road.

The family say they did not realise they had strayed over the US border.

They were stopped by a police officer who did not read them their rights, nor allow them to "simply turn around" and go back to Canada, according to the complaint.

At first the young family say they were separated - with David Connors being held in a male-only cell, and Eileen Connors and their infant son in a women's cell.

Later, the husband was taken to a detention centre in Tacoma, Washington, while his wife and their baby son were taken to a budget hotel near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, according to the complaint.

The following morning they say they were driven to the airport, which raised their hopes that they were being flown back to Canada or the UK.

"But that was not the case," Eileen Connors says in the sworn statement. Instead, they were flown to Pennsylvania - on the other side of the country.

They were taken on 5 October to Berks Family Residential Center (BFRC), one of three immigration detention centres in the US that can accommodate families.

Mrs Connors says: "We will be traumatised for the rest of our lives by what the United States government has done to us."

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed the family was in detention at the BFRC facility in Leesport, Pennsylvania.

A spokesman for the agency told the BBC that BFRC "provides a safe and humane environment for families as they go through the immigration process".

"Reports of abuse or inhumane conditions at BFRC are unequivocally false," he added.

The couple's sworn statement says the cells are "frigid", and staff have refused to turn the heating on until the end of next month.

"When I ask how I am supposed to keep my baby warm in this horrible cold, all they tell me is to put a hat on him," Mrs Connors said in the statement.

"My baby can't wear a hat all the time, he feels uncomfortable with hats and mittens and starts to cry."

Staff, she added, confiscated her son's formula for three days, as well as his teething powder, and would only provide "disgusting" blankets that smelled "like a dead dog".

They say the baby's skin is now rough and blotchy and he appears to have an eye infection.

"We have been treated like criminals here, stripped of our rights, and lied to," Mrs Connors said. "It is not right.

"We have been treated unfairly from day one. It is undoubtedly the worst experience we have ever lived through.

"We have been traumatised and it has even damaged our relationship. No one should have to suffer this kind of treatment."

During the 2008 and 2012 campaigns, one of the main themes of this website was railing against examples like this of the loss of freedom and growth of the police state this nation underwent after 9/11.

Today the new anti-libertarian majority here cheers this kind of thing on.

Everybody knows they are all murders, rapists, terrorists, and welfare cheats. Or so they say. These people were smuggling drugs.

I'm just curious to know how big this f'king animal must have been to require a detour.

News stories never accurately give all details even when they try. It’s hard to get real information. But when there is a fake news agenda, you know there is a lot missing in this story.

We do have a baby involved though. Did the police pull it out of an incubator and throw it on the ground?

All of that aside, at face value, it sure does sound ridiculous and wrong. Why would a cop do this?

It's not completely unheard of, and it works both ways. In 2015 my sister landed in Toronto and didn't have a return ticket so they assumed she had no intent of returning to the US. She was put in a holding cell with a bunch of Jamaicans and later released and flown back to a random airport in NY. From there we had to get her home to Georgia. She wasn't flown clear across Canada, though, to be detained. —Speaking of which, I don't even think Canada has family detention centers. Barbarians, obviously.

David Connors, 30, and Eileen Connors, 24, were driving during a holiday to Vancouver, Canada, earlier this month when they were apparently forced to turn onto a dirt track.

But as they carried on down the unmarked road they were stopped by US border guards, their lawyers said on Monday.
    ...
But officials at the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which runs the centre, branded the Connors' claims as "unequivocally false."
    ...
Mrs Cambria, the family's lawyer, said: "They had no idea they had crossed any boundary.

"They had no idea they were even in the United States.

"They were just trying to get back to their hotel."
    ...
    https://www.thesun.ie/news/4660597/b...itting-animal/
Now if they had said they were sightseeing, that might explain taking off on dirt roads (that bypass the official border crossing). But avoiding an animal and trying to to find their hotel? On a dirt road? Hmm.

I was thinking the same thing.

    There was no animal.

This is part of a coordinated invasion of our sovereign nation.

    These people are invaders.

There may be some Ron Paul types out there who would ask why there's a road there in the first place that crosses the US-Canada border without any wall or official border crossing point that everyone on that road would be forced to stop at, and why in the absence of something like that people simply driving down that road would be arrested without having violated any apparent laws that they would have any way of knowing about. But that is shear victim blaming. These people are invaders, and we're all victims of their crime.

Probably has a lot to do with why Zippy was all over it. I'm actually kind of surprised it hasn't been "zippified" and had every other sentence bolded and italicized, nor did he include his obligatory taken completely out of context and edited "there were good both people on both sides" video as "proof" Drumpf is a huwhyte supreeeeeeemacist.

    I concur.

It is no wonder that they came from Canada.

It reeks of Canadian arrogance and progressive omission of any wrongdoing.

Act like an illegal alien.....get treated like an illegal alien.

Sounds like they wanted to exercise some white privilege.

If only our border agencies would treat all illegals like this.........

Must be propaganda. Fox covered the story. https://www.foxnews.com/us/british-f...turn-canada-us

Michael Connors says he was driving close to the U.S.-Canada border when an animal suddenly appeared, and he swerved onto an unmarked road to avoid hitting it, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Almost immediately, the family was surrounded by police cars and Border Patrol agents.

I imagine what side George Soros is on, and I take the opposite side. It's always the right side. For example, helping Nazis confiscate property from Jews in Germany during WWII. That is wrong. Losing rights after 9/11. That is wrong. Making up bull$#@! stories about families being detained at the border to encourage more socialism. That's wrong. You are wrong.

How about the French girl, last year, that was visiting in Canada and accidentally crossed the border when she was jogging along the beach? No signs- no nothing. She was arrested & held for 2 weeks.

So let's get the government to do it....they're really good at doing things good. I'm sure building and maintaining a good fence is right up there on the list of things the government does good.

So I guess you and superf figure we should let them all in and if the rapists, pedos, murderers, convicted, fleeing felons, terrorists
etc etc continue with their crimes and repeat them in the US 10 or 15 times we should then allow expulsion.

In all honesty I was thinking moose or grizzly, but unless it was just sleeping in the middle of the road I doubt it was going to be there longer than the time it would have taken to make a detour. I just don't think the story passes the smell test.

Yep, the story keeps changing. Imagine that.

According to a statement from a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) spokesperson, the family was actually arrested on Oct. 2 around 9 p.m., after being spotted on video surveillance on Zero Avenue.

“The vehicle then turned south and entered the U.S. illegally, by slowly and deliberately driving through a ditch onto Boundary Road in Lynden, Washington,” reads the statement.

“The vehicle traveled west on Boundary Road continuing on the United States’ side, and was pulled over by a Border Patrol agent a short time later.”

The CBP says a records check found that two of the adults in the vehicle had been previously denied travel authorization to the U.S.

The agency claims that Canada refused to allow the family to return north of the border, and that two attempts to contact the U.S. consulate were unsuccessful.
