Flight Passenger Growth Could Halve Due to ‘Flight Shame’, Says New Research

    https://www.independent.co.uk/travel...-a9129206.html

    10/2/2019

The expected growth in air travel passenger numbers could halve due to climate change fears, according to new research.

Swiss bank UBS surveyed more than 6,000 people from the UK, US, Germany and France about their flying habits, and found the rise of “flight shame” or flygskam seems to be spreading.

More than a fifth (21 per cent) of those surveyed said had they had intentionally reduced the number of flights they took over the last year.

While just 16 per cent of British travellers claimed to be cutting back, 24 per cent of Americans said climate change had convinced them to reduce the number of flights they took.

According to UBS, there has been a marked increase in the number of people purporting to be curbing their flying habit since the survey was first conducted in May 2019.

Part of this could be due to the flight shame movement, which started in Sweden but has since gained traction further afield thanks to high profile examples, such as teenage activist Greta Thunberg’s recent trip to the US by yacht.

Attention-grabbing protests from climate change activism group Extinction Rebellion, which has targeted the aviation industry in the past, have also raised awareness of the issue this year.

The number of air travel passengers has been rising at a rate of 4-5 per cent a year – a statistic the two biggest planemakers, Airbus and Boeing, use to calculate future passenger growth.

Both have predicted passenger numbers will roughly double by 2035.

However, based on current trends, UBS estimates EU flight numbers will increase by just 1.5 per cent – half the number expected by Airbus – with US growth forecast at 1.3 per cent, rather than the planemaker’s prediction of 2.1 per cent.

If UBS’s forecasts are correct, it could result in aircraft orders dropping by 110 per year.

It comes as even airlines are committing to tackle climate change; this summer, Dutch carrier KLM encouraged passengers to “fly responsibly” and announced it was launching train services as an alternative to its Amsterdam-Brussels route.

You can filter your polled base,
word a survey to get the results you 'need' , and do 50 of the them
until you get one to produce the results that meet your agenda, the
one that best reflects your 'bent' gets published.

I don't believe any of this 'study' , in my view people are adjusting their lives to avoid
being groped and interrogated, treated like 3rd world scum just to be permitted
    to travel.

I stopped fly with the advent of TSA, from the Patriot Act to DHS, all of it
is about intimidation and producing a cowering population that will roll over
and do anything and everything the government demands.

Nothing since 911 has been introduced to fight terrorism, the enemy of the
Federal Government is Patriots, and the US Constitution.

Nah, there's literally nowhere I have to be that I need to fly to, and if I can't drive or take a boat there, I'll either leave early and meet you there or I just aint goin.

You see, I was on not one, but two planes that almost crashed in less than 48 hours. Hurricane Ivan, 2004. I was on leave when it hit Panama City and had to meet my ship in Maine the next day. The puddle jumper from Tallahassee to Atlanta went wingtip perpendicular to the ground on all three landing attempts - I could see the reflection of the wingtip running light on the wet runway....I still have nightmares about that moment.

We diverted to Savannah for 5 hours. Over half the plane got off there and rented cars. I would've if I wasn't broke lol. When I finally got to Atlanta, all flights were cancelled until the next day.

Of course, the Hurricane is traveling up the east coast, so we had to fly through it again the next day, this time in a 757 that had two very significant drops in altitude, and half slid off the runway sideways in Boston....

No. $#@!ing. Thank. You. Haven't been on a plane since, and refuse to get on one ever again. Besides, I'd rather road trip anyway, I love driving.

It won’t be because of flight shaming. It will be because the experience has become so miserable.

Ditto. Pretty much the best example that people don't want freedom is their willingness to be treated like a prison inmate.

No kidding. My husband has been groped in LaGuardia and JFK. Multiple times.

Also a reason I quit flying. We were leaving LaGuardia after my boot camp graduation, and I got "randomly" selected for the extra scrutiny search. This was in March of 2002, height of the paranoia. I wasn't in uniform, but did have the obvious military boot camp haircut, wearing USCG sweats. Everyone in the line loudly objected to my treatment, but they did it anyway. To be honest, I didn't care at the time, was just another 'merica mindless drone then.

If the global powers that be wish to reduce the number of people flying, they can simply increase taxes/fees, empower the TSA/equivalents to do more of what they do, and generally wipe out the buying power and standard of living for the masses that presently fly.

    Mission is being Accomplished.
