On Wednesday, nearly 2,000 police and customs officers searched apartments and businesses in what’s being described as massive human trafficking raids in Berlin.
German prosecutors say that they’re looking for suspected human traffickers who exploit foreign workers mostly within the construction industry.
Approximately 1,9000 officers took part in the sweeps, searching more than 100 businesses and apartments across the capital, Berlin’s prosecutor’s office said in a statement. In addition to carrying out raids in Berlin, authorities also conducted sweeps on properties in the East German states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt.
The raids themselves are being conducted on suspicion of the “organized smuggling of foreigners into the construction industry” and “human trafficking for labor exploitation.”
