Federal energy program suggests keeping thermostat set at 78 degrees — 82 while you sleep

    By Colleen Killingsworth
    Aug 19 2019

LOS ANGELES - To keep your home cool with central air conditioning while also optimizing energy efficiency (and therefore cost), keep the temperature at 78 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.
The suggestion comes from Energy Star, a federal program managed jointly by the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency that provides information to consumers about energy efficiency practices that not only save consumers money, but also improve air quality and protect the environment.

According to Energy Star, keeping your central air thermostat set to 78 degrees is optimal for both cooling and energy efficiency, but this recommendation only applies to the times when you are home.
While you are away from the house during the day, you should keep the thermostat set to 85 degrees or higher.
While you sleep, Energy Star recommends keeping the temperature set at 82 degrees or higher.

For those who hate to sweat in summer months, keeping your home temperature set at a minimum of 78 degrees during the day and 82 degrees through the night might sound awful, but the benefits are significant.

For every degree you raise the set temperature of your central air, you’ll save about three percent on your utility bill, according to the Department of Energy.

The Department of Energy also stresses keeping the heat coming from within your house to a minimum as well to keep efficiency high and costs low. Small adjustments like turning off appliances and lights when they aren’t being used, only washing full loads of laundry and dishes, taking shorter showers and running fans while you do things like shower and cook can also help reduce the heat build-up in your home.

I need it to be at least 65 to sleep well.

Many hotels I stay at limit the thermostat. And I can only get it down to read 20C (68F) in HK, and I'm not sure it ever gets that cold.

Anna Lee Halderman is a 28-year-old Connecticut woman facing felony charges after police say she confronted a woman who called her out for sunbathing topless in front of children at a beach in Westport. Halderman is accused of not only exposing her breasts in front of children, but also pulling down her swimsuit bottoms to flash her backside at the woman who complained, police say. (sounds like something @Suzanimal would do)

After an “extensive investigation” identified Halderman as the woman in the July 2019 incident, she was arrested on August 17, police said. Halderman, who lives in the nearby Fairfield County city of Norwalk, was charged with risk of injury to a minor and second-degree breach of peace, the Westport Police Department said in a press release.
Halderman’s father, Joe Halderman, is a disgraced CBS producer who spent time in prison after trying to extort David Letterman in 2009 when he found out the now-retired talk show host was having an affair with his assistant, Stephanie Birkitt.

Anna Lee Halderman and her father could not be reached for comment by Heavy. It is not clear if she has hired an attorney who could speak on her behalf.
Here’s what you need to know about Anna Lee Halderman:

    1. Halderman ‘Became Belligerent’ & Removed ‘the Bottom Portion of Her Bathing Suit Exposing Her Buttocks’ After Being Confronted by the Mother, Police Say

    Anna Lee Halderman

The incident involving Anna Lee Halderman occurred in the wealthy Fairfield County town of Westport on Monday, July 15, 2019, at Compo Beach, according to a press release. Westport Police were called to the beach just before 1:30 p.m.
“The caller reported to officers that she had observed a female on the beach remove the top portion of her bathing suit to tan. Believing that this behavior was inappropriate for a public beach, this individual attempted to confront the woman about what she was doing,” Westport Police said. “Upon speaking with this individual and attempting to convey her concerns, the woman allegedly became belligerent and proceeded to remove the bottom portion of her bathing suit exposing her buttocks.”
The woman told police she was with her juvenile child and the child witnessed the entire incident, according to the press release.
“The complainant reported that in addition to her inappropriate behavior this woman appeared to her to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the interaction,” police said.
    Anna Lee Halderman.

Westport Police said an officer conducted an “extensive investigation,” and charges were filed against Halderman after she was identified by the officer. She turned herself in at Westport Police headquarters on Saturday, August 17, after learning an arrest warrant had been issued, police said.
The woman who made the complaint lives in New York. She posted on Facebook after the incident, “Why have we as a race lost our respect for ourselves for one another. Why have we lost our accountability. Rather than assisting in helping someone we would assume cover it up as best as we can. Wipe it under the carpet and hope it goes away. Last week I decided I needed a day with my children as we piled in the car and drove an hour and a half to Compo Beach in Westport CT. Upon arrival, I immediately noticed an older man and a younger woman in front of us. The woman was so belligerently drunk she stumbled into the ocean and fell to her side on her head. [She then] proceeded to get up stumble to her towel and body slam herself down so much so we heard a thump.”
The woman continued, “Being a mother with my children aI tried to enjoy myself but kept a firm eye on the situation. Approximately an hour in I noticed she had exposed her breast. I quietly and calmly approached them and explained I had children with me would she please cover up. Long story short they both decided to speak unpleasantries to me. I was yelling down the beach at this point for the life guard. As I was walking to get the 50 something year old man approached my children When I returned to my blanket the couple was packing up to leave but not before removing her top fully, asking where my children were then removing her top and then her bottoms preceding to bend over in front of them.”
The woman said in her post, written prior to Halderman’s arrest, that Westport officials were “doing nothing.” She said she was told they couldn’t locate the people involved. She said, “Security escorted them out. They have the make and model of the car and a partial license plate. A pass is needed to enter this beach and the beach is patrolled by cameras. I have a hard time believing the authorities could not locate these individuals. The town is covering something or someone up.”
The man Halderman was with has not been identified publicly.

    2. She Told Police She Has ‘No Recollection’ of What Happened at the Beach & Apologized for Her Actions, According to the Arrest Report
    Anna Halderman.

Westport Police said an officer conducted an “extensive investigation,” and charges were filed against Halderman after she was identified by the officer. She turned herself in at Westport Police headquarters on Saturday, August 17, after learning an arrest warrant had been issued, police said.
According to police, “in a subsequent interview with Halderman she stated that she did not recall what she may have done on the date in question but apologized for her behavior.”
According to a 2007 Hartford Courant article analyzing the criminality of being nude in public, breach of peace is often a charge used if an officer determines a person is nude and causes “annoyance” and “alarm.”
Halderman’s arrest comes as three New Hampshire women using the rallying cry “Free the Nipple,” try to challenge that state’s law barring women from being topless in public, saying it violates the Constitution because the law does not apply to men. The U.S. Supreme Court is considering whether to take up the case, according to NBC News.

    3. Halderman’s Father Spent 6 Months in Rikers Island in the $2 Million Letterman Blackmail Case
Anna Lee Halderman and her father Joe Halderman.

Halderman is the daughter of Robert “Joe” Halderman, a former CBS producer who was fired and arrested in 2009 when he attempted to blackmail talk show host David Letterman for $2 million after uncovering an affair that Letterman was having with his assistant.
According to CBS News, Letterman’s assistant, Stephanie Birkitt, also was apparently romantically involved with Halderman at the same time as her affair with Lettermanand she was living with Halderman in his Norwalk home.
Joe Halderman was working as a senior producer for CBS News’ “48 Hours” at the time of his blackmail arrest. He was charged with attempted grand larceny in Manhattan and faced up to 15 years in prison, but pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted grand larceny and was sentenced to six months in prison. He served four months of his sentence at Rikers Island before being released.
Anna Halderman is one of two children born to Joe Halderman and his ex-wife, Patty Montet. Joe Halderman was last known to be working with controversial conservative figure James O’Keefe and Project Veritas.

    4. Anna Lee Halderman Graduated From New Canaan High School & Colorado State University Before Working in Sales for Media Companies
    Anna Lee Halderman.

Anna Lee Halderman is a native of New Canaan, Connecticut, another nearby Fairfield County town to Westport, and graduated from New Canaan High School, according to her Facebook profile. She then graduated from Colorado State University in 2015 with a degree in communications and a minor in political science, according to her Linkedin profile.
Halderman worked for a year as a media sales associate at a Stamford, Connecticut, company, and then spent a year working as an account executive for a Bridgeport, Connecticut, radio station. It is not clear if she is currently employed anywhere. She wrote on Linkedin that she is a “driven and successful digital and media sales professional with a passion for growth and achievement.”

    5. Halderman Was Released After Posting $50,000 Bail
    Anna Lee Halderman.

Anna Lee Halderman was charged with risk of injury to a minor, a felony, and second-degree breach of peace, a misdemeanor. Her bond was set at $50,000, and she was able to post that upon turning herself in on the arrest warrant on August 17, the Westport Police said in a press release.
Risk of injury to a minor is a class C felony and carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. Second-degree breach of peace is a class B misdemeanor, which carries a potential sentence of up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.
Halderman is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Norwalk for the first time on Friday, August 23. Halderman does not appear to have a prior criminal record.

For every degree you raise the set temperature of your central air, you’ll save about three percent on your utility bill, according to the Department of Energy.

I'm pretty comfortable spending the extra $15.60 a month for three months so we can live like post-1950s middle class Americans.

There are no crimes against people.
There are only crimes against the state.
And the state will never, ever choose to hold accountable its agents, because a thing can not commit a crime against itself.

Ummm, I set my thermostat at 78 when I’m out of town! When home it’s 71 all day and 69 for sleeping. Am happy to pay the extra, maybe 20 bucks a month.
Seem to remember reading it’s more efficient for the air conditioning to just maintain a constant temperature...

I'm comfortable spending the extra three hundred dollars a month to not live like an African in a mud hut.

Ironic that a government subsidized industry, whose buildings are no doubt cooled to lower than 78 degrees, pontificate about energy efficiency and taking one for the team.

Smart thermostats should be mandatory, and they should regularly report violations to the government. If sleeping at 82 is good, sleeping at 90 is even better. This is a global effort, and your sleeping temperature should be consistent with any other nation with a similar climate. If it’s good enough for a poor neighborhood in Bangalore, it’s good enough for you.

And then they can check on their marble floors and million dollar water features.

A real smack in the face for the most wasteful and falsely opulent to tell those often living paycheck to paycheck about ways to save money.

It's like a drug addict telling you how to stay off drugs. Or more accurately, a robber telling you that maybe you ought to lower your standard of living due to the fact that they've robbed you of your money.

I agree, more efficient and avoids the ridiculous temps they expect us to live under, in the old

While you sleep, Energy Star recommends keeping the temperature set at 82 degrees or higher.
    Hell. No.

Anyone who proposes this should have to sleep next to Mr A when the thermostat is over 70. He's sweats a lot and it's disgusting. I bet I'd be using more energy washing the bedding everyday than I'd be saving moving the thermostat.

I remember, years ago, people calling me nuts and a "conspiracy theorist" when I warned them that the coming "smart grid" and "smart meters" would be able to detect what type of load was on a given circuit and would be able to, either through the grid or "The Internet Of Things", shut down appliances and systems that the central grid controllers felt were using too much power.

    Goddamn you Cassandra.

And just think what will happen to this rickety electric grid when 300 MILLION electric vehicles get plugged into it every day.

If every ICE car were replaced with an EV, roughly 13 TRILLION kilowatt hours of new supply would be needed DAILY.

Having lived through it, well do I remember the "settled science" being agreed that peak oil in the USA had been reached, we'd never produce more than we needed again, that man's pollution was going to cause a new ice age, and that by 2000, gold, copper, aluminum and silver would be virtually unobtainable.

So, by dint of trillions of dollars and man-hours of research and work, we have powerful cars that emit nothing more than unicorn farts, home heating units that touch 90% thermal efficiency, and have achieved energy independence.

And the Bolsheviks can't stand that.

So they're just going to take it from you when they achieve enough power, which is very soon.

FLASHBACK – Jimmy Carter 1977: Set Winter Thermostat to 55 Degrees Overnight

    https://www.breitbart.com/environmen...ees-overnight/

    ROBERT KRAYCHIK 23 Aug 2019

As president, Jimmy Carter advised Americans to set their thermostats to 55 degrees overnight during the winter months to “waste less energy,” offering his guidance in a televised address to the nation on February 2, 1977, in the midst of a national natural gas shortage.

In laying out his proposed national energy policy, Carter did not call for reducing taxes on or regulation of the energy industry to incentivize increases in production. Instead, he prioritized “conservation.”

    Carter said:

Our program will emphasize conservation. The amount of energy being wasted which could be saved is greater than the total energy that we are importing from foreign countries. We will also stress development of our rich coal reserves in an environmentally sound way; we will emphasize research on solar energy and other renewable energy sources; and we will maintain strict safeguards on necessary atomic energy production.

The responsibility for setting energy policy is now split among more than 50 different agencies, departments, and bureaus in the Federal Government. Later this month, I will ask the Congress for its help in combining many of these agencies in a new energy department to bring order out of chaos. Congressional leaders have already been working on this for quite a while.

We must face the fact that the energy shortage is permanent. There is no way we can solve it quickly. But if we all cooperate and make modest sacrifices, if we learn to live thriftily and remember the importance of helping our neighbors, then we can find ways to adjust and to make our society more efficient and our own lives more enjoyable and productive. Utility companies must promote conservation and not consumption. Oil and natural gas companies must be honest with all of us about their reserves and profits. We will find out the difference between real shortages and artificial ones. We will ask private companies to sacrifice, just as private citizens must do

(So now, over 40 years later, with President Sanders, oil companies, and by extension myself, since I am in that business, are to be prosecuted and thrown in jail for successfully overcoming the "permanent" problem of energy shortages, and turning the US into the world's largest producer and a net exporter of energy products. $#@! these people...I hope you all go dark and hungry...$#@!ing ingrates. - AF)

All of us must learn to waste less energy. Simply by keeping our thermostats, for instance, at 65 degrees in the daytime and 55 degrees at night we could save half the current shortage of natural gas.

There is no way that I, or anyone else in the Government, can solve our energy problems if you are not willing to help. I know that we can meet this energy challenge if the burden is borne fairly among all our people—and if we realize that in order to solve our energy problems we need not sacrifice the quality of our lives.

On April 18, 1977, Carter warned of a possible “national catastrophe” in the absence of broad-based “sacrifice” among Americans regarding energy consumption, predicting that “inflation will soar; production will go down; [and] people will lose their jobs.”

“We are now running out of gas and oil,” claimed Carter.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recommendation for Americans to keep their thermostats at 78 degrees during the day and 82 degrees at night during summer months is reminiscent of Carter’s aforementioned proposal, assessed Charles Hurt, Washington Times opinion editor and Breitbart News columnist.

Hurt joined Thursday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow to discuss the EPA’s environmental focus.

“Remember the whole thing back when we were a nation in malaise under Jimmy Carter?” asked Hurt. “Actually my very first memory in life was waiting in gas lines in the little town I was living in, where I was born, and sitting in the back seat and it was so hot.”

Hurt continued, “Of course, back then, whether we had air conditioning in our cars or not I don’t remember, but it didn’t really work when you were in a line of hundreds of cars on the day that you were allowed to go to the gas station and fill up, and this was what Jimmy Carter brought on with his stagflation.”

Hurt went on, “What was [Jimmy Carter’s] recommendation? His recommendation for the winter months was to keep the furnace turned way down and to wear a sweater, and that encapsulates everything about Jimmy Carter, and sort of the leftist state.”

What does this mean; ''Goddamn you Cassandra.''

Big grids fail Big , catastrophically, which reminds me of our internet, we (humans) are digging ourselves
a hole the size of which has never in history been seen, I wonder if we will have the wherewithal to
avert extinction the day the entire grid shuts down due to some unforeseen electrical / communications /
    interne- fail event.
