Trump acts to regulate social media!

But the new executive order would put all of that content moderation under the FCCís purview, CNN reports. The government agency would be able to take away a companyís legal immunity if it removes or hides content without notifying the poster. The FCC can also strip the ďgood faithĒ immunity if it decides a company is acting unfairly or deceptively when hiding or removing content.

Under this kind of regulation Alex Jones would almost certainly be allowed to return i think!

So, granting the FCC sweeping new powers over a whole new area of communications is now somehow a GOOD thing?

    What could possibly go wrong?

Allowing government sockpuppets to cartelize the speech marketplace is a better idea?
Giving companies special protection and then not requiring them to fulfill the requirements for it is a good idea?

There are better solutions to this problem but this is better than the status quo and we aren't likely to get the better solutions yet.

This is about preserving the First Amendment... the Supreme Court has ruled 9-0 that social media is the public square so they cannot take our First Amendment rights.

Putting aside for now the debate over whether the First Amendment even applies, of course the FCC is famous for it's reverence of the 1st Amendment and their efforts to preserve and protect it.

this is about our rights on their platforms. The Supreme's have said they're akin to the public square so rapists and convicts can go on them so Alex Jones being banned is not allowed. The Executive branch is taking action and we should support it.

No? How are they going to prove that they aren't using such coding? The FCC is just as corrupt as the rest. Now under the FCC's protection, they will be able to use their censorship rules and any new ones they make up to do so legally...lol....you think you are being protected by the FCC....omfg...smfh

It's the law, whether you like it or not. The social media companies are the modern day public square and we have inalienable rights.

Social media is how people talk nowadays, they are basically the post office the telephone and email all in one for modern society and are an essential utility. You can't even get a job nowadays if you can't do a skype interview. Maybe there isn't a current law for this but maybe there should be, otherwise it will be the new Jim Crow, private busieneses will destroy peoples life by kicking them off social media platforms or shadow banning them.

The Supremes have ruled several times that social media is the public square:

The Supreme Court issued an opinion confirming something we at Cloudflare have long believed -- that the First Amendment protects access to the Internet. Using sweeping language, Justice Kennedy compared internet access to access to a street or park, "essential venues for public gatherings to celebrate some views, to protest others, or simply to learn and inquire,” and concluded that "to foreclose access to social media altogether is to prevent the user from engaging in the legitimate exercise of First Amendment rights."

    ..

In 2008, North Carolina passed a law making it a serious criminal offense for a registered sex offender to access certain social media sites that included children as members. Lester Packingham Jr., the defendant in the case, had registered as a sex offender after pleading guilty in 2002 to having sex with a 13 year old when he was a 21 year old college student.

Packingham was charged with a violation of the North Carolina law after he posted a statement on Facebook expressing his relief about the dismissal of a state court traffic ticket. After his conviction, Packingham appealed, arguing that the law was unconstitutional.

The Supreme Court struck down the law as a violation of the First Amendment, which, among other things, prohibits government action (“shall make no law”) that inhibits free expression or assembly. Although all eight justices to rule on the issue (the newest Justice, Neil Gorsuch, didn’t participate in this decision) agreed that the North Carolina law was unconstitutional, the Justices disagreed on the scope of First Amendment protections.

Writing on behalf of five members of the Court, Justice Kennedy emphasized the importance of protecting access to the internet, noting the substantial benefits it provides:

“Social media allows users to gain access to information and communicate with one another about it on any subject that might come to mind. . . . By prohibiting sex offenders from using those websites, North Carolina with one broad stroke bars access to what for many are the principal sources for knowing current events, checking ads for employment, speaking and listening in the modern public square, and otherwise exploring the vast realms of human thought and knowledge. These websites can provide perhaps the most powerful mechanisms available to a private citizen to make his or her voice heard. They allow a person with an Internet connection to ‘become a town crier with a voice that resonates farther than it could from any soapbox.’”

So as you can see the Executive branch is closely following the law.

that isn't a law, that is a single ruling or interpretation of the law and putting content moderation under the purview of the FCC is a long ways away from that.

This was definitely a government caused problem due to net neutrality laws giving social media platforms a defacto monopoly on electronic communications you can't really roll that back just by getting rid of net neutrality either, because they have become a defacto monopoly unless you want to bust them up completely. They have complete control over our elections so they can use their political capital to take out their competition. Social media basically has a monopoly on government force in the market place because most people would be destroyed by them if they tried to compete on a level playing field.
