Rand Paul angles to become Trump's emissary to Iran

    https://www.politico.com/story/2019/...-trump-1418075

    07/17/2019

Sen. Rand Paul has been among the most prominent voices warning against military intervention.

Over a round of golf this past weekend, Sen. Rand Paul asked President Donald Trump’s blessing for a sensitive diplomatic mission.

Paul proposed sitting down with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif to extend a fresh olive branch on the president’s behalf, according to four U.S. officials. The aim: to reduce tensions between the two countries. Trump signed off on the idea.

With Zarif in New York City this week for U.N. meetings and private sitdowns with journalists and think-tank experts, the prospect of the dovish Kentucky senator serving as the administration’s chief diplomatic emissary has rankled many administration officials, who are expressing concern that Paul’s intervention threatens to scuttle the president’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran.

It is unclear whether the senator will meet with Zarif. He and his office declined multiple requests for comment. But the president’s willingness to tap Paul as the go-between with a top Iranian official is a demonstration both of his unorthodox approach to foreign affairs and his continuing desire, even as his aides threaten to squeeze Iran until it capitulates to U.S. demands, to entice the Islamic Republic’s leaders to the negotiating table.

Trump has been attempting to start negotiations with Iran for months, a campaign that has included letters to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, an attempt to use Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as an emissary to Tehran, and public comments expressing his desire to talk. Some Iranian officials have said that they are open to negotiations, but only after the administration removes sanctions. Khamenei, however, has likened talking with the U.S. to drinking “poison.”

Paul, along with Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and David Perdue (R-Ga.), played a round of golf with the president on Saturday at his club in Sterling, Va.

The libertarian-leaning Paul has long been wary of U.S. foreign intervention, and he’s clashed with Trump administration officials over the possibility of a military conflict with Iran.

Paul has been among the most prominent voices warning against military intervention. When Trump last month called off retaliatory military strikes against Iran after an Iranian military official downed a U.S. drone over international waters, Paul went on the president’s favorite television network to offer unqualified praise. "It really takes a statesman to show restraint amidst a chorus of voices for war," Paul told Fox News’ Martha MacCallum.

He also took a jab at the administration’s policy, arguing that Iranians view the punishing sanctions imposed by the Trump administration as “an act of war.”

Paul has long been at odds with the team of hawks serving at the top echelons of the Trump administration, including National Security Adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. At the outset of the administration, he led a public campaign against the administration’s current special envoy to Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, when his name was floated

Earlier this year, Paul pressed Pompeo on whether the administration believes it has the authority to battle the Iranian regime under a 2001 law that allowed the U.S. to pursue the fight against al Qaeda and affiliated terrorist groups in Afghanistan and beyond.

When Pompeo tried to sidestep the question, Paul warned the administration not to pursue such a conflict, at least not without Congress’ imprimatur.

“You do not have the permission of Congress to go to war with Iran,” Paul told Pompeo during the April hearing on Capitol Hill. “Only Congress can declare war.”

The move smacks of desperation, said Mark Dubowitz, head of the hawkish Foundation for Defense of Democracies, which has pushed for a hard line on Iran.

"It’s a fine idea to make it clear you’re interested in negotiating and a diplomatic path, but you have to be selective and circumspect," Dubowitz said. "Right now, Trump has tapped everybody and their mother to be an emissary."

"The one thing that these guys don’t understand is the more desperate they look for a deal the more the Iranian regime will play hard to get," he added. "Then when it comes to the table it will be even more inflexible in its negotiating position. And the final result will end up looking like Obama 2.0."

When told that the president had blessed an outsider to reach out to Zarif, a Trump administration official familiar with Iran issues laughed and quipped: "He's given up on all of us!"

Keeping in view the golden 'follow the money' rule, be careful what you wish for ; if this materializes, he could end up being emissary of notorious Iran war championing neocon Adelson who is top donor of GOP-MAGA/Neocon-Lite wing.
MAGA is supposed to be more gutsy than Rand and even he escalated purposeless and wasteful war in Afghanistan, recently bombed Syria ( reportedly on Ivanka's advice) and has currently put up harsh sanctions and military buildup around Iran that carries risk of accidental war spark even if neocons still feel being deterred by America's wars fatigue. Does Rand have what it takes to to stand up to billionaire Adelson or even Ivanka?

Assuming ,ofcourse , that above report is non-fakenews.

Mega-donor Adelson, with access and influence, scores two pro- Israel victories
These are heady days for casino billionaire and megadonor Sheldon Adelson.
A passionate and hawkish advocate for Israel with close ties to its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, Adelson was in Jerusalem today for a celebration of the U.S. embassy’s relocation to that city, a longstanding priority for the mogul. Similarly, Adelson had pushed hard for President Donald Trump to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal, which happened last week.
And the day after that announcement, Adelson quietly slipped into the White House for a private meeting with Trump and three top administration officials: Vice President Mike Pence, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and an Adelson favorite, National Security Adviser John Bolton, according to two conservative sources familiar with the previously unreported private event.

MAGA's Top Donor: US should drop atomic bomb on Iran

American-Jewish billionaire blasts Obama over negotiations with Tehran; says US should show Iran nuclear capabilities.

By Maya Shwayder, JERUSALEM POST CORRESPONDENT

NEW YORK – During a panel at Yeshiva University on Tuesday evening, Sheldon Adelson, noted businessman and owner of the newspaper Israel Hayom, suggested that the US should use nuclear weapons on Iran to impose its demands from a position of strength.

Asked by moderator Rabbi Shmuley Boteach whether the US should negotiate with Iran if it were to cease its uranium enrichment program, Adelson retorted, “What are we going to negotiate about?”

Adelson then imagined what might happen if an American official were to call up an Iranian official, say “watch this,” and subsequently drop a nuclear bomb in the middle of the Iranian desert.

"Then you say, ‘See! The next one is in the middle of Tehran. So, we mean business. You want to be wiped out? Go ahead and take a tough position and continue with your nuclear development. You want to be peaceful? Just reverse it all, and we will guarantee you that you can have a nuclear power plant for electricity purposes, energy purposes’," Adelson said.

“So a tremendous demonstration of American strength?” Boteach clarified. “So that they would get the message?”

“It’s the only thing they understand,” Adelson said.

One take is that this was leaked to discredit the whole initiative. This is politically courageous of Rand Paul. I don't see much upside for him in doing this from a selfish political perspective. A true statesman-like gesture. The neocons will smear him mercilessly in primaries.

This is great, if true. For one, if Rand comes back with a great deal, it will give him something to talk about in 2024.
Does not mean much for my personal life, but the better part has already started, watching tools like enhanced_deficit flail, wail, and gnash his teeth trying to demonize Rand for diplomacy.

Oil Prices Plunge After Trump Sends Rand Paul To Ease Tensions With Iran

    ...........
Like his father Ron Paul, the junior Paul has over the past years been outspoken in favor of drawing down US troops world-wide and ending "regime change wars". He's been a consistent critic since the start of his political career on everything from Afghan policy to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, to US covert efforts to overthrow Assad.

For now, it seems the market is viewing this positively as oil prices are re-plunging on the apparent de-escalation (though this will likely frustrate OPEC).

Also likely frustrated is the 'deep state', no doubt already riled over Trump's choice to represent the White House at the table with Zarif. As Politico reported further:

Paul has long been at odds with the team of hawks serving at the top echelons of the Trump administration, including National Security Adviser John Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
At the outset of the administration, he led a public campaign against the administration’s current special envoy to Venezuela, Elliott Abrams, when his name was floated as a candidate for deputy secretary of state — and helped to scuttle his candidacy by bashing his hawkish views in an appearance on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show, according to a source directly familiar with the events.

Trump’s better deal with Iran looks a lot like Obama’s

Donald Trump has long trashed the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement as “the worst deal ever,” a “disaster” that didn’t cover nearly enough of the Islamist-led country’s nefarious behavior.

In recent weeks, however, the president has indicated that the Barack Obama-era deal might not be so bad after all.

Trump has repeatedly urged Iran to engage in negotiations with him, while saying that Tehran’s nuclear ambitions are his chief concern — “A lot of progress has been made. And they'd like to talk,” Trump asserted Tuesday at the White House. His aides and allies, meanwhile, have recently suggested that Iran and other countries should follow the guidelines of a deal they themselves have shunned as worthless.

At times, analysts and former officials say, it sounds like Trump wants to strike a deal that essentially mirrors the agreement that his White House predecessor inked — even if he’d never be willing to admit it. Iranian officials seem willing to egg him on, saying they’ll talk so long as Trump lifts the sanctions he’s imposed on them and returns to the 2015 Iran deal. And as European ministers warn that the existing deal is nearly extinct, Trump may feel like he is backed into a corner and running out of options.

“Trump got rid of the Iran nuclear deal because it was Barack Obama’s agreement,” said Jarrett Blanc, a former State Department official who helped oversee the 2015 deal’s implementation. “If you were to present to Trump the same deal and call it Trump’s deal, he’d be thrilled.”

The administration’s confusing messaging is a result of warring between two major factions, U.S. officials say, with Trump in his own separate lane. The infighting has been deeply frustrating to those involved in the debate. “In the past, even when I personally disagreed with a policy, I could explain its logic,” a U.S. official said. “Now I can’t even do that.”

Trump quit the nuclear deal in May 2018, reimposing sanctions the U.S. had lifted on Iran in exchange for curbs on its nuclear program. He said the deal should have tackled Iran’s non-nuclear activities, such as its sponsorship of terrorist groups, and blasted the expiration dates on some of its clauses.

As tensions have spiked, one voice pushing for a deal has been Trump.

He’s said he’s “not looking for war,” wants to talk to Iran without preconditions and isn’t interested in regime change. He called off a military strike on Iran over its downing of an unmanned U.S. drone, overriding the advice of several top aides. His main public demand is that Iran not build nuclear weapons. In return, Trump has offered to help revive Iran’s sanctions-battered economy.

To observers, that sounds suspiciously like the 2015 deal.

They can't have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said Tuesday. “We want to help them. We will be good to them. We will work with them. We will help them in any way we can. But they can't have a nuclear weapon."

Trump occasionally nods to other disputes with Iran, such as its funding of militia groups, ballistic missile testing and Tehran’s support of rebel forces in Yemen, but nuclear weapons dominate his rhetoric.

    Good move.

“The spirits of darkness are now among us. We have to be on guard so that we may realize what is happening when we encounter them and gain a real idea of where they are to be found. The most dangerous thing you can do in the immediate future will be to give yourself up unconsciously to the influences which are definitely present.” ~ Rudolf Steiner

I do think Rand is a sellout and spineless for cozying up to Trump but that doesn’t mean I can’t support anything he does. Rand at the very least holds some of the non interventionist ideals which I support. So what exactly is your point? Oh you don’t have one.

Those two posts that NCL posted were from 2012 and 2015. Rand was not cozying up then. Why didn't you like him long before Trump?

Trump says he didn't tap Rand Paul to serve as envoy in talks with Iran

President Trump on Thursday disputed that he asked Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) to serve as an emissary to Iran following a report that the he signed off on the senator's request to help smooth tensions.

“No I don’t know anything about that other than I have spoken to Sen. Paul, and Sen. Paul is somebody I have a very good relationship with,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

“And I would listen to him, but I didn’t appoint him, no,” he continued. “No he’s somebody I listen to, and I respect Sen. Paul and if he had some ideas I would listen.”

Politico reported Wednesday that Paul proposed meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif to attempt to restart negotiations on the president's behalf, and that Trump gave the idea his approval.

Paul has been an outspoken critic of U.S. intervention in foreign conflicts, and earlier this year stressed that the Trump administration must seek approval from Congress to go to war with Iran.

But Trump on Thursday pushed back on the idea that he was planning to send an emissary to meet with Zarif, instead touting his administration's campaign of sanctions to cripple the Iranian economy.

"All we want is to have a fair deal," Trump said.
