Exclamation Senate to vote Thursday to block Trump's Saudi arms deal

The Senate will vote Thursday to block President Trump's controversial arms sales to Saudi Arabia, paving the way for a showdown with the White House.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said the Senate will hold three votes on the 22 sales that would also send weapons to the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. Two standalone votes will be on resolutions to block sales to Saudi Arabia. Senators would then have a third vote that would condense the remaining 20 resolutions of disapproval into one vote.

The resolutions blocking Trump's arms sales are anticipated to be able to pass the Senate, where they only need a simple majority. At least four Republicans are expected to vote with all 47 Democrats to block the arms deal.

House Democrats have also pledged to block the sales, setting the stage for a massive veto showdown with Trump. Neither chamber is expected to have the votes to override the vetoes.

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) pointed to the bipartisan opposition to the arms sales as a sign of "coalition building" in Congress to check an administration's foreign policy authority.

"I think the votes going to be significant — well over 50 but possibly over 60 and even with a potential of getting a veto-proof," Paul told reporters.

UK arms sales to Saudi Arabia unlawful, court rules

Campaigners have won a legal challenge over the UK government's decision to allow arms sales to Saudi Arabia, which is engaged in the war in Yemen.

Campaign Against Arms Trade argued the decision to continue to license military equipment for export to the Gulf state was unlawful.

It said there was a clear risk the arms might be used in a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

Judges said licences should be reviewed but would not be immediately suspended.

International Trade Secretary Liam Fox said the government would not grant any new licences for export to Saudi Arabia and its coalition partners while it considers the implications of the judgment.

A spokeswoman for Prime Minister Theresa May said the government was "disappointed" and would be seeking permission to appeal against the judgment.

US Senate votes to block Trump's $8bn Saudi arms sale

The US Senate has voted to block the sale of billions of dollars' worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia, striking a blow to President Donald Trump.

Mr Trump bypassed Congress last month in an attempt to push through the $8bn (£6bn) deal, citing threats to Saudi Arabia from its bitter rival Iran.

But on Thursday - in a rare bipartisan act - the Republican-led Senate passed three resolutions to prevent the sale.

The president has promised to veto the action, leaving the deal in limbo.

While the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives is also likely to vote to block the sale, analysts say it is almost certain Congress will not have the necessary votes to override a veto from Mr Trump.

The first and second resolutions of disapproval passed by a margin of 53-45 and a third vote, which covered a number of other resolutions relating to the arms sale, passed by 51-45 votes.

As well as Saudi Arabia, weapons would also reportedly be sold to the United Arab Emirates and Jordan under the deal.

Mr Trump bypassed Congress last month by invoking a rarely used aspect of federal law. He declared that ongoing tensions with Iran amounted to a national emergency, meaning the sale of weapons - including precision-guided bombs - was a matter of urgency.

But the move sparked fierce opposition on Capitol Hill from those who feared the weapons may be used against civilians in Yemen by Saudi-led forces.

Just hours before the vote, Iran shot down a US military drone over the Strait of Hormuz.

This escalated fears of a wider conflict and will no doubt reinforce the administration's argument that its allies need these weapons.

President Trump has promised to veto the Senate action in order to proceed with the deals, and lawmakers almost certainly do not have enough votes to override that.

But they will keep up their legislative resistance in other ways, because they are afraid that the administration will try to bypass them over any decision to launch a military strike on Iran.

In your dreams, You won't get President Pelosi no matter how hard you wish.
Rand isn't stupid enough to replace Trump with someone worse.

They will not impeach, remove and hang enough people to give the presidency to anyone better.

    Unfortunately that's not veto proof.

Trump vetoes 3 bills prohibiting arms sales to Saudi Arabia

President Donald Trump has vetoed three joint resolutions prohibiting arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the White House announced Wednesday, rejecting an attempt by congressional lawmakers to halt the controversial weapons transfers.

In messages to the Senate, Trump announced he was returning the bipartisan bills that would have blocked licensing for certain arms sales in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, France, Spain and Italy.

“Apart from negatively affecting our bilateral relationships with Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Italy, the joint resolution would hamper the ability of the United States to sustain and shape critical security cooperation activities,” Trump said in one of the messages.

He called each resolution “ill-conceived” and said it failed to address root causes of conflict in Yemen.

“The United States is very concerned about the conflict’s toll on innocent civilians and is working to bring the conflict in Yemen to an end. But we cannot end it through ill-conceived and time-consuming resolutions that fail to address its root causes,” Trump said. “Rather than expend time and resources on such resolutions, I encourage the Congress to direct its efforts toward supporting our work to achieve peace through a negotiated settlement to the conflict in Yemen.”

The package of resolutions of disapproval stood as a symbolic showing of congressional opposition — including from within Trump’s own party — to the administration’s relationship to Saudi Arabia, following the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi last year.

The Trump administration declared in May an emergency to bypass Congress and expedite billions of dollars in arms sales to various countries — including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates — citing the need to deter what it called “the malign influence” of Iran throughout the Middle East.
Anytime Congress doesn't let him do what he wants, he declares an emergency.
