NYPD Chief found dead in his car from a suicide a day after filing his retirement papers

Deputy Chief Steven Silks was pronounced dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound Wednesday evening.Silks was off-duty and located near Burns Street and 69th Avenue in Queens.

The officer was found sitting in a car suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Elmhurst Hospital by an NYPD car and was listed in critical condition — where he was later pronounced deceased.

Highly credible sources tell Breaking911.com that Silks handed in his retirement papers to the NYPD last night. He was scheduled to retire at the end of July after 38 years on the job.

What did he know about a certain former Senator from New York?

    Such a tragic loss.

It's always so sad when an Officer dies.

Now the missing NYPD detective, Joe Calabrese, has been found dead.

    Another "suicide".

The veteran NYPD homicide detective who went missing on Thursday, sparking a massive manhunt, was found dead of an apparent suicide, police sources said.

The body of Joe Calabrese, 58, was found near bushes in Plumb Beach in Brooklyn Thursday afternoon, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police sources said.

“I don’t understand it. I don’t understand why he would do this,” said a stunned police officer who knew Calabrese.

    Yet another NYPD "suicide".

    https://pix11.com/2019/09/03/retired...island-source/

STATEN ISLAND — A retired NYPD officer died by suicide Monday night, a law enforcement source told PIX11 News.

The man shot and killed himself at his home in Staten Island, the source said. He was a retired transit sergeant, according to the New York Post.

His death is the latest in what has become an epidemic for the police department.

Nine NYPD officers — not including the retired sergeant, whose name has not been released — have died by suicide this year.

I think one is counting active duty officers only and the other is counting retired officers.

Or maybe one is just less accurate.

A veteran NYPD detective who was recently stripped of his gun due to personal problems committed suicide at his mother’s Queens home while off-duty on Monday, law enforcement sources said.
Second-grade Detective Paul Federico, 53, was found hanging in the house on 79th Street in Middle Village around 12:25 p.m., sources said.
He was pronounced dead at the scene but no note was found.
“His wife was in front screaming,” said neighborhood resident Mario Kustera, 53.
“She was saying, ‘Why did my husband do this?’”
The 29-year veteran was a 9/11 first responder who helped searched for human remains amid rubble brought to the Fresh Kills on Staten Island.
He’d lost a kidney to cancer within the past two years, sources said.
“He was very dedicated to the job and to the department and he’ll be sorely missed,” Detectives’ Endowment Association President Paul Di Giacomo said.
Federico was recently stripped of his gun and placed on restricted duty due to unspecified personal problems, sources said.
Federico had sought counseling through the department, but it’s unclear if that led to his change in status.
He was most recently assigned to Police Commissioner Dermot Shea’s liaison unit, sources said.

A retired NYPD police officer who died by suicide on Long Island last week was the second active or former city cop to take his own life in a span of four days, the Daily News has learned.

Daniel Shirreffs, 46, hanged himself inside his home in Seaford on Thursday, sources with knowledge of the case said.

Shirreffs retired from the NYPD last year, sources said. He had served the department for 23 years and was last assigned to the NYPD Driver Education and Training Unit, which is headquartered at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.
