Farage's Brexit Party have made a clever move in this Special election. They selected a candidate who is known locally due to appearing on a reality tv show 'The Secret Millionaire' so voters are warming to him. We'll see if its enough later on.

Yes GE, it's a City so tends to be Labour.. The Conservatives got 7,000 votes so the vote was split between them and the Brexit Party and the Labour candidate came through

Next time the seat is up for grabs there may not be a Conservative party and Brexit can take it, or they can accuse the Conservatives of being "spoilers" and get people to not vote for them.

Peterborough by-election: Labour beats Brexit Party to hold seat

The Labour Party has narrowly seen off a challenge from the Brexit Party and held on to its seat in the Peterborough by-election.

Union activist Lisa Forbes managed to retain the constituency for Labour, beating Nigel Farage's candidate Mike Greene by 683 votes.

Ms Forbes said her victory was "significant" and showed people had "rejected the politics of division".

The Brexit Party said "no seat is safe" after its performance.

Labour and the Brexit Party had jostled for position as the bookmakers' favourite up until the result was announced.

The recently formed Eurosceptic group was vying to secure its first MP after gaining 29 seats in the European elections two weeks ago.

    Brexit Party 'rejected'
But, as the winner was declared shortly after 02:00 BST, a chant erupted from Ms Forbes' supporters.

In a victory speech, she said her win had "shown that the politics of hope can win regardless of the odds".

"Despite the differing opinions across our city, the fact that the Brexit Party have been rejected here in Peterborough shows that the politics of division will not win," she said.

Mr Farage made a brief appearance at the count before the result was announced but left without talking to reporters.
The Brexit Party had been tipped to win in Peterborough, where voters backed Leave by 61% to 39% in the 2016 referendum
This was far from a Brexit Party landslide - and was a much closer contest than many had predicted.

The Conservatives won 7,243 votes, meaning their support didn't collapse as much as Mike Greene and the Brexit Party hoped it would.

Likewise, the Lib Dems' Beki Selleck more than doubled her vote tally compared with 2017.

Police are investigating a Facebook comment by a Labour Party supporter who claimed that he burned a thousand Brexit Party ballot papers before the recent Peterborough by-election and “laughed whilst doing it”.
“She [Lisa Forbes] got nominated (elected) because 3 people including me burned over a [sic] 1000 votes for TBP [The Brexit Party], and laughed while doing it,” said Alan Roddis.
“That is what we have to do to stop fascist scum like [Nigel] Farage never see power,” he added.

Labour went on to win the election by just 683 votes, meaning that if the Labour Party supporter’s boast is true, he swung the outcome of the election.
The claim was made “in a closed group called ‘Peterborough Politics’ – a popular local discussion forum on Facebook” which has previously promoted “extreme and anti-semitic ideologies, including many made by local Labour activists,” reports Politicalite.

Police are now reportedly investigating the matter after the Brexit Party passed on the information. They also handed it to the press, although coverage has been minimal.

Burning 1000 votes would be hard to hide. Would be a nice fire. (and ten percent of all votes allegedly cast for Brexit).

Authorities insist ‘no evidence’ of electoral fraud in the Peterborough by-election as police investigate allegations

Allegations of electoral fraud have been made about last week’s by-election in Peterborough with claims of postal vote rigging and intimidation - but the authorities insist there is no evidence of any wrongdoing.

Labour’s Lisa Forbes won the seat by 683 votes ahead of the Brexit Party’s Mike Greene, but a senior Conservative has alleged there was “harvesting” of postal votes, while the Tories have highlighted the involvement in the campaign of Labour activist Tariq Mahmood who was jailed in 2008 for postal vote interference.
Labour has also branded the allegations of electoral fraud as “false and baseless”.

On Mr Mahmood’s involvement, a Labour spokesperson said: “Peterborough council, who organise the count, always announce the results in a public area of the venue. There were hundreds of people there. The Labour Party had 19 official guests who were allowed in to the restricted areas. He was not one of them.

Voting practices in the Peterborough by-election won by Labour were worthy of corrupt ex-Soviet state Kazakhstan, independent observers warned last night.
They said the sight of people photographing their completed ballot papers was something they had only ever seen in Kazakhstan ‘many years ago’.
The oil-rich state has until recently had only one president since it broke with the Soviet Union in 1991, with claims that even last Sunday’s election was rigged.
Labour’s victory by just 683 votes over the Brexit Party in Peterborough was mired in controversy last week after The Mail on Sunday revealed claims that a convicted vote rigger was at the centre of the party’s campaign. Cambridgeshire Police have since revealed they are investigating five complaints of electoral malpractice, including bribery. Now election experts Democracy Volunteers have raised fresh concerns over the by-election.

John Ault, director of the organisation, said he had seen people photographing their completed ballot papers in what he suggested could show they were fulfilling a ‘contract’ to prove how they had voted.
He told The Mail on Sunday: ‘I have observed many elections across Europe and only once in Kazakhstan many years ago did I see what I saw happen three times in Peterborough.
‘There are signs up warning you not to take photographs and these were not selfies celebrating having voted but people photographing their cross on the ballot paper.’

He added: ‘One can only speculate as to why some voters feel the need to do this, although this can, in some cases, point to a contract being fulfilled or an inducement having been given.
‘It needs to be discouraged and, in the cases I saw, they were either not noticed or not challenged by polling station staff.’
Democracy Volunteers sent a team of four experienced observers to observe 23 of the polling stations used in the by-election. They watched as about 700 of the 27,000 who voted at a polling station cast their vote and witnessed so-called ‘family voting’ – where more than one person goes into the same voting booth – in half of the stations.
The practice has in the past raised fears that voters were being told by other family members where to put their cross. Mr Ault said: ‘To the great credit of the polling staff, this was challenged persistently whenever it occurred. It is everyone’s right to vote in private.’
The concerns come after this newspaper revealed Tory claims last week that Tariq Mahmood, a convicted vote rigger, had been involved in Labour’s winning campaign.

anti-Brexit Party "arsonist" found making to false claims

Peterborough Council has rejected claims an alleged anti-Brexit Party arsonist was a counting agent during the recent by-election.

Alan Roddis caused a storm on social media by claiming he burnt ‘over 1000’ Brexit Party votes and ‘laughed’ whilst he was doing it.

He suggested there is a ‘government directive’ to do this to ‘stop fascist scum like Farage’ from getting elected.

Peterborough Council confirmed there is no record of him working as a counting agent during the recent by-election, which saw Labour’s Lisa Forbes retain the parliamentary seat by 683 votes.

They said: ‘I can confirm that we have referred this comment thread to the police, and it is now in their hands to investigate.

‘Cambridgeshire Constabulary has a dedicated team to work jointly with Peterborough City Council to investigate allegations of electoral malpractice. People can be rest assured that any corrupt practices will be treated very seriously, and action taken if offences come to light.’

Mr. Roddis made the claims on a Facebook group called ‘Boris Johnson Supporters’ Group’, which supports the former London Mayor’s bid for Prime Minister.
