Amash's presidential decision could spell trouble for Trump in Michigan

This decision should not be made lightly, a lot would be riding on such a big decision. Firstly, despite some erosion in MAGA's conservative base support (over DACA/2nd amendment flip fops etc), he's still very popular within GOP. Latest Foxnews poll showing MAGA losing to Biden, Sanders, Liz Warren should not be given too much weight at this early stage even if it isn't fakenews poll. Secondly, MAGA is involved in massive domestic spending and globalist inteventions projects at present, changing horses midstream can be disruptive for government functioning in many voters view. Amash in 2020 would be bit inexperienced too.
That said, if there is a genuine chance of GOP-MAGA/neocon wing losing to Dems in 2020 as a result of some surprise Mueller related development or economic cycle shift by election time, many conservatives/Republicans would likely prefer a libertarian with Republican background over a left wing neocon Dem.

At first, MAGA's aggressive attack on Amash today looked like the right move to stop any more Congressional defections, but on second thought this may turn out to be a mistake if alienating enough libertarians and Amash costs MAGA Michigan and 2020. MAGA donor class might be looking at future prospects also. Respected neoconservative casino owner and Israel-First activist Sheldon Adelson has invested huge sums of money in MAGA election, careless kneejerk strategy of alienating libertarians could backfire and sink that massive investment in 2020.
When representative of Gun Owners of America had called MAGA a 'fraud' recently, MAGA had refrained from attacking back as that would have risked alienating even broader pro 2nd amendment community. Perhaps somewhat similar cautious approach should be used in dealing with criticism from anti-interventionist, pro-liberty, small government libertarians. In contrast, MAGA attack on Coulter after she invoked 'scam presidency' term did not carry similar scale risks and did not really accelerate bleeding of hard Right conservatives support after that attack.

Nicholas Sarwark, the chairman of the Libertarian Party, told Salon on Sunday that he agrees with GOP Rep. Justin Amash that President Donald Trump committed impeachable offenses... and also argued that Amash could be the Libertarian presidential candidate in 2020.

"Based on my own reading of the redacted Mueller report, I agree with Representative Amash's conclusions that the President committed impeachable offenses and would have been indicted for obstruction of justice if he was not the sitting President," Sarwark told Salon by email. "Our constitution provides impeachment as a tool, but whether to use that tool is up to the House."

As Sarwark explained to Salon, however, the Libertarian Party's interest in Amash goes beyond his willingness to break ranks and call for Trump's impeachment.
"Many Libertarian Party members have been publicly encouraging Representative Amash to seek the 2020 nomination. Of all the members of Congress, his positions seem to most closely match those of the Libertarian Party, so he would likely have a base of support within the party if he joins the contest that will be decided in Austin next May," Sarwark wrote.

Washington — If Republican U.S. Rep. Justin Amash decides to run for president as a Libertarian, his candidacy has the potential to upend President Donald Trump's re-election chances in Michigan.
Libertarian Party leaders predict Amash could win the nomination should he pursue it, and analysts say the fifth-term congressman could draw Republican votes from Trump in upper Midwest battleground states.
A Trump critic from the Grand Rapids area, Amash has flirted with suggestions that he make a run for the White House in 2020 when asked about the idea.
The 38-year-old lawmaker says he has not ruled out a run on the Libertarian ticket but also claims he isn't actively considering it.
