Australia Election Results: Prime Minister Scott Morrison Seizes a Stunning Win

    May 18, 2019

SYDNEY, Australia — Scott Morrison, Australia’s conservative prime minister, scored a surprise victory in federal elections on Saturday, propelled by a populist wave — the “quiet Australians,” he termed it — resembling the force that has upended politics in the United States, Britain and beyond.

The win stunned Australian election analysts — polls had pointed to a loss for Mr. Morrison’s coalition for months. But in the end, the prime minister confounded expectations suggesting that the country was ready for a change in course after six years of tumultuous leadership under the conservative political coalition.

“I have always believed in miracles,” Mr. Morrison said at his victory party in Sydney, adding, “Tonight is about every single Australian who depends on their government to put them first. And that is exactly what we are going to do.”

The election had presented Australia, a vital American ally in the Asia-Pacific, with a crucial question: Would it remain on a rightward path and stick with a political coalition that promised economic stability, jobs and cuts to immigration or choose greater action on climate change and income inequality?

By granting Mr. Morrison his first full term, Australians signaled their reluctance to bet on a new leader, choosing to stay the course with a hardworking rugby lover at a time when the economy has not suffered a recession in nearly 28 years.

“Australians are just deeply conservative — wherever possible, we cling to the status quo,” said Jill Sheppard, a lecturer in politics at the Australian National University. “While we want progress on certain issues, we don’t like major upheavals.”

Australia election shocks the ‘experts’ – Once again they underestimate conservative message

...As we have seen recently all around the world, the progressives and the leftist media had determined ScoMo, as he is affectionately called by his supporters, to be dead on arrival. In fact, they had called this election “unwinnable”.

Bill Shorten, his opponent and leader of the Labor Party, had campaigned on a platform of adding a death tax, raising corporate tax rates, removing investment property tax deductions and increasing regulations to stop climate change, including a 49% renewable energy target by 2030 in Australia.

From an outsider perspective that doesn’t seem to be a winning platform, but it appeared to be a foregone conclusion here that he would win. And save Australia. And therefore save the planet.

Yet in my own informal polling of waiters and Uber drivers and café goers, it appeared the pollsters hadn’t been talking to the people I was.
    ...
In Australia, where voting is compulsory, there’s a cynicism around politics in general. I find that Australians much prefer to talk about American politics and can tell me more about the U.S. political scene than their own.
    ...
In fact, the average Australian is shocked when I tell them about our current booming economy, our historic low unemployment and rising wages. It’s the first they’ve heard of that. No wonder they think our president is a joke and are shocked when I tell them he will overwhelmingly be re-elected in 2020.

Compulsory voting? Get ready for the left to reverse course and decide that maybe they don’t want everybody voting...

Australia's conservative coalition secured an outright parliamentary majority on Monday following a shock election victory, allowing Prime Minister Scott Morrison to progress his legislative agenda without the support of independents.Morrison's coalition defied forecasts to be re-elected on Saturday in what he called a political miracle.
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) on Monday said Morrison's coalition has won 76 seats in Australia's parliament, which is comprised of 151 elected lawmakers.
The AEC said the coalition is ahead in one of the three seats that have not been declared.
Respected Australian Broadcasting Corporation election analyst Antony Green said the Morrison's coalition will retain its lead in at least one more seat, allowing it to select a parliamentary speaker and still retain a majority.

One of Morrison's first tasks after being sworn in will be a cabinet reshuffle after the retirement of several front-benchers. The personnel shift will be closely watched for signs of policy changes.
"The cabinet reshuffle will indicate whether he plans to move on polices such as climate change," said Rodney Tiffen, Emeritus Professor of Political Science, University of Sydney.
"A big signal will be whether he moves the ministers for environment and energy. If he replaces them with people who have argued for stronger action, it will be marker."
