Walmart says it will raise prices because of tariffs

    https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/16/busin...ina/index.html

Walmart, America's largest retailer, said Thursday it will raise prices on some products as a result of the Trump administration's tariffs on Chinese goods.

"We're going to continue to do everything we can to keep prices low. That's who we are. However, increased tariffs will lead to increased prices, we believe, for our customers." Walmart chief financial officer Brett Biggs told reporters on a call after the retailer reported earnings for the first quarter of 2019.

Biggs did not say which items will become more expensive at Walmart. He noted, however, that Walmart's merchant teams have been developing strategies to mitigate cost increases and working with its suppliers to manage prices.

Walmart has less exposure to China than many other retailers because more than half of its sales come from groceries. Most of the food Walmart sells comes from the United States and other regions such as South America.

But Walmart (WMT) still imports 26% of its merchandise from China, UBS analyst Michael Lasser estimated in a report earlier this week. Target (TGT) imports 34% of its products from China. Other companies, including sporting goods, auto parts and furniture sellers, have even greater exposure to China.

Last week, the Trump administration hiked tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese-made goods. The tariffs mostly hit industrial materials and component parts, but also applied to luggage, hats and gloves for US importers.

Additionally, the United States has started a formal process to put new tariffs in place on the remaining exports coming from China that aren't already taxed. That could make a number of goods, including toys, clothes and sneakers, more expensive for American consumers.

Retailers depend heavily on China in their supply chain. China accounted for about 41% of all apparel, 72% of all footwear, and 84% of all travel goods imported into the United States in 2017, according to a letter several retail trade groups sent to the Trump administration last week.

Other retailers have also recently warned that tariffs will hit their businesses.

On Wednesday, Macy's said it will raise prices on some merchandise because of the trade war with China.

"If the potential fourth tranche of tariffs is placed on all Chinese imports, that will have an impact on both our private and our national brands," CEO Jeff Gennette told analysts on an earnings call. He said it would be hard for Macy's to "find a path" to avoid increasing prices on consumers.

Meaning they are not sure. And they will do everything they can to make China eat the import fees.

We should just ban all imports from China. Their flimsy products are made from communist devil magic and the tears of small children.

You might have to spend more money for Made Anywhere But China items on your next trip to Wal-Mart.

    I already buy Made-in-USA only

Except for last year I bought a chest cooler with built in cup holders and built in speakers.

Apparently American companies don't make coolers with built in cup holders and speakers.

Only people with magical thinking believe u can raise the cost of doing business without affecting the price consumers pay for it. Some liberals believe this but people with fundamental understanding of economics laugh at those people.

One more thing about tariffs, I believe its a way to force the locals to invest in local industries by making then patronizing those businesses. It may pay of in the long run but to believe that somehow it will be pain free or cost neutral at the onset is just silly. If these business being protected by Trump end up flourishing and stand alone companies(i.e. thrive without govt help), then we all win. But I think its way too early to tell how this will end up.

    Good.

Since the days of Nixon, stagnant wages and currency devaluation have been hidden by shoddy imports and cheap $#@! made from Chinesium.

Just like the shock to the system the new tax code is throwing on people, this is a necessary shot in the arm.

Their manipulations will come back to bite them.

Trump's tariffs are just one example.

Aside from the direct threat of conquest there is also the fact that allowing the destruction of your economy will create millions of voters that are dependent on government for their needs while impoverishing and thereby disempowering millions more.

Political power (and therefore liberty) flows out of gun barrels and bank accounts.

It has been said (and seemingly forgotten) that even if you believe in open borders you can't have them while the welfare state exists and it is just as true that even if you want free trade or something as close to it as possible you can't have it while the regulatory state exists.

Tariffs are also simply the best form of taxation and as much of the cost of the legitimate functions of government should be shifted to them as possible.

Didn't vote for Trump last go around. He has my vote in 2020 at this point. Neither of my parents voted for Trump in 2016, or anybody. Like me they didn't give a $#@! about the choices. They, 91 and 88, asked me to drive them to the polls in 2020. They want to vote Trump. As do I. They, like I, are tired of "business as usual," and, well, for good or bad, that is Trump.

The two closest to me are the poster child for bad service , I honestly do not know why people use them . There is nothing in there you can not get as cheap and in some cases much better ( meat ) other places locally . I would also guess your vehicle will be hit in the parking lot at least once per yr if you are a weekly visitor because they seem to be magnets for the least skilled drivers .

Tariffs....or FRN dollar devaluation? There's a reason "Trump" has been meeting regularly with the controlled heads of the major US corps. My bet is coordinating the public spin for dollar devaluation, as the dollar continues to lose global reserve status and infinite printing/exporting inflation ability, and subsequent price inflation that previously was kept under control by exportation of price inflation.

I've been looking for the last year and still can't find any official evidence, whether statutory, executive order, or otherwise, that directs any agency of the US government to impose tariffs, other than the original "proclamation" (which generally carries no legal weight...recall that the Emancipation Proclamation didn't free slaves....that required the "new and improved" 13th amendment) that imposes steel and aluminum tariffs. I'd think something this important to the narrative of imposing vast tariffs across the world would generate at least an executive order.

China is one of the poorest places on Earth. The median income is around 600 bucks a month with a low quality of life. They have grown from a low starting point through debt and wage arbitrage which cant last forever. China is not a success story. They have a zillion people and a Communist government who takes a big cut of the pie so the government has a lot of power. For the average person the country is a filthy impoverished hell.

"Walmart Chief Financial Officer Brett Biggs said in an interview that higher tariffs will result in increased prices for consumers. He said the company will seek to ease the pain, in part by trying to obtain products from different countries and working with suppliers’ “costs structures to manage higher tariffs.”

I really don't know enough the argue numbers but I seriously doubt its anywhere close to the poorest place on earth, yea its no San Francisco but China is indeed a prosperous nation. Also its not really about where they are not but where the trajectory points to. And to that, I see China heading straight up at record speed and the US stagnating.

I will be convinced otherwise when I start seeing them decline

I tried that but I don't think they are able to understand that the joke is on them. I have figured out that it is very difficult/ close to impossible to make fun of an ignorant person because after you are done describing to them why the joke is funny, its no longer funny.

Think of it this way, fundamental of economics say that if you increase the cost of doing business, that will likely lead to increase in price. This is actually all you need to know to confidently say that tariffs would lead to price increases. I know some of you think Walmart or the Chinese would eat all this extra cost but reality says that they wouldn't. They might absorb a small portion of the new taxes but consumers will most likely pay bulk of it.

This is the same idea that allows people like Ron Paul to predict that prices are going to rise when one increases minimum wage. He might not know the exact time prices will increase but rather that it will increase to balance out their operating cost. This is not a conspiracy against Trump.
