The Kurdish parliament held a vote to formally reactivate the presidency, which has been suspended for close to 18 months, Kurdistan24 reported May 8.
This is a major step as the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region of Iraq moves to finalize a new government following the region's parliamentary elections in September 2018. Under the new process, the Kurdish parliament will elect the president directly, as opposed to a public vote. The Kurdistan Democratic Party's (KDP) Nechirvan Barzani, the current prime minister, is expected to become president, after which he will likely nominate his cousin, Masrour Barzani, to become the KDP candidate for prime minister.
