No, it most certainly does not "protect" you from price gouging.

Most often, however, "price gouging" (which in reality is just prices rising to meet the level of demand with respect to the availability of the good/service) is an effect brought about through coercion (i.e., government interference).

Proof right here that socialists are narcissists.

Yep, But those who gouge because of availability are most times actually screwing themselves. If you are the only gas station for 50 miles around you can gouge like hell, but in the long run it's actually bad business and you will make less than if you had only "slightly higher" but still fair prices. They don't teach this in business classes anymore.

Because someone else can move in and sell the same product at a cheaper price. That's the free market.

Again, if prices are high, it is because demand is high and supply is low.

So a agency that extorts money to pay for a crummy service that exists only by law is efficiency to you? You make no sense!

This is a bizarre thread. Generally, private companies have an incentive to provide better customer service in order to attract continued and future customers. This could be one or more of a combination of things such as a quality product/service, price, efficiency, etc. These companies can only exist through having a stable of willing customers.

Government entities generally don't need to provide customer service since most of their "customers" are unwilling participants, and most government entities receive artificial funding that is independent of market demand.

Obviously, there are more curve balls that can be thrown into the mix (as with healthcare), but those don't invalidate this basic premise.
