That is yet to be seen. Limestone does NOT tolerate heat well at all. Chances are at least fair that a very large proportion of the stone will have to be replaced. That will cost BILLIONS. Not one billion, but many. The cost of the stock alone will be huge. Cutting the stones stands to represent herniating labor expenses. Ask HIM how long and how many people it will take to replace the façade work, tracery, etc. Macron is an ignorant jerkoff - he said he'd have it done in 5 years. We will be lucky to get it done in 50.

Note that anything physically low that is ruined means everything above it must be removed. The one bit of the structure that is almost certainly intact is the granite structure beneath the limetone. That's the real structure. The limestone is just the fancy bit, but without it the cathedral is not a cathedral.

Oh, and dismantling the stonework is delicate proceedings, and $$$$$$$$$$.

This is in no way surprising. These projects are not undertaken by just anyone who hangs a shingle that says "Restorations R Us". These companies are generally very well experienced and the protocols for doing such work are now very well developed and understood. The claim that this was an "accident" is thin and anemic as the devil. It doesn't track at all with reality.

Also, I cannot begin to imagine that such a company does not carry super-heavy insurance. The Frog government would not allow anyone to even approach without it. T he thing to watch for, then, is whether the Frogs attempt to make a cliam against the restoration organization. I am willing to bet you will see no such attempt because the moment they do, the insurance investigators will be on it like stink on rice. If the scene is tainted, the insurers will decline for that reason. If they find arson, same result.

The LAST thing the Frog "authorities" want is for the truth to emerge. That much is plain. What is not yet clear is how far they are willing to ride the lies and deceit pursuant to the "accident" story. I wonder if sinking Notre Dame will prove sufficient incentive to break the Frogs' heads out of their brie-lined sphincters. I doubt it, but look forward to being proved wrong.

Is it? Surely the carcass could sit for centuries, largely unchanged. But do the Frogs have the will to rebuild it? Is the Frog government interested, Macron's talk notwithstanding? Perhaps... perhaps not. Those dingleberries are capable of anything. I can as easily see the Frogs selling it for a mosque. More easily, in fact. It would be just the poke in the eye to the French people that the Frogs might enjoy delivering. Yellow Vest protestors in Paris battled police during violent clashes Saturday -- newly enraged at the more than billion dollars that have been pledged to rebuild fire-damaged Notre Dame Cathedral, overshadowing their anti-wealth cause.
Black-hooded demonstrators set fire to trash cans, scooters and a car and pelted police with rocks to draw attention anew to their 23rd weekend of protest.
Many protesters are frustrated that the international effort to help Notre Dame has drawn more attention than their five-month-old Yellow Vest movement against wealth inequality, The Associated Press reported.

Modern architects have begun circling the charred remains of Notre Dame, proposing that it should not be faithfully restored, but rebuilt with “contemporary” features such as a glass roof, steel spire, or even a minaret.

With leading academics and professionals in architecture generally being hostile to building or restoring anything in styles predating the infamous Le Corbusier (Charles-Édouard Jeanneret) and the Bauhaus school, they were quick to pounce when President Emmanuel Macron’s prime minister announced there would be a competition to “ask the question of whether we should even recreate the spire as it was conceived… Or if, as is often the case in the evolution of heritage, we should endow Notre-Dame with a new spire”.
The Telegraph published an article claiming it would be a “travesty” to restore Notre Dame as it was just a day after the fire, while Rolling Stone quoted a Harvard architecture historian as saying that the burning of a building “so overburdened with meaning… feels like an act of liberation.”
Now proposals for a new spire are beginning to come together, and leading architects do indeed appear to be pushing for a “contemporary” replacement in the ubiquitous glass and steel style used for modern buildings all over the world.

Lord Norman Foster, arguably Britain’s most famous modern architect, has unveiled a design topping the ancient cathedral with a glass and steel canopy with a featureless glass and steel spire, which he describes as “a work of art about light” which would be “contemporary and very spiritual and capture the confident spirit of the time” in comments to The Times.
Ian Ritchie, a modern architect most famous for the so-called Spire of Dublin — a metal spike erected in the Irish capital — is mulling a proposal along similar lines, which he describes as “a refracting, super-slender reflecting crystal to heaven” or a “beautiful contemporary tracery of glass crystals and stainless steel” — i.e. a featureless glass and steel spire.


Perhaps most controversial is a proposal in Domus, the architecture magazine, by Tom Wilkinson, for the fallen spire to be replaced with an Islamic minaret, to memorialise Algerians who protested the French government in the 1960s.
“These victims of the state could be memorialised by replacing [the spire] with – why not? – a graceful minaret,” Wilkinson insisted.

The French Senate has passed a bill asserting that Notre-Dame must be rebuilt exactly as how it was before a fire nearly destroyed the medieval Catholic cathedral.
“The Senate has now approved the restoration bill already passed by the French parliament to allow work on the structure to be completed in time for the Paris Olympics in 2024 – but requires that the restoration be faithful to the “last known visual state” of the cathedral,” reports the Local.
The bill stands in opposition to President Macron’s announcement, made shortly after the fire, that an international competition of architects would decide the fate of the church.
This was followed by calls from numerous public figures that the rebuild should reflect France’s new modernist “diversity”.
Numerous suggestions on how to rebuild the cathedral sparked outrage, including proposals to turn its roof into a giant swimming pool or a huge greenhouse.

French billionaires who promised nearly $1 billion to rebuild Notre Dame haven't contributed a single penny to the effort in the two months since they made their headline-grabbing commitments, according to the Associated Press, citing church and business officials.

Instead, American donors have been footing the bills for up to 150 workers employed by the cathedral following the April 15 fire that destroyed its roof. Some $4 million collected via the charitable foundation of the Friends of Notre Dame is being handed transferred to the cathedral in the first payment to date towards the reconstruction.
"The big donors haven’t paid. Not a cent," said senior Notre Dame press official Andrew Finot. "They want to know what exactly their money is being spent on and if they agree to it before they hand it over, and not just to pay employees’ salaries."

Almost $1 billion was promised by some of France’s richest and most powerful families and companies, some of whom sought to outbid each other, in the hours and days after the inferno. It prompted criticism that the donations were as much about the vanity of the donors wishing to be immortalized in the edifice’s fabled stones than the preservation of church heritage.
Francois Pinault of Artemis, the parent company of Kering that owns Gucci and Saint Laurent, promised 100 million euros, while Patrick Pouyanne, CEO of French energy company Total, said his firm would match that figure. Bernard Arnault, CEO of luxury giant LVMH that owns Louis Vuitton and Dior, pledged 200 million euros, as did the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation of the L’Oreal fortune. -Associated Press

Finot says the donors are holding out to see how the reconstruction plans are coming along and will fight over contracts.
In reality, boots have been on the ground for weeks, with work continuing around the clock according to AP. Without a legal method to pay the workers, the cathedral has been relying on the charity foundation to fund the cleanup and phase-one of the reconstruction.

Founded in 2017, the Friends of Notre Dame de Paris said that an estimated 90% of its donations came from Americans.
"Americans are very generous toward Notre Dame and the monument is very loved in America. Six out of our 11 board members are residents in the U.S.," said charity president Michel Picaud, who just returned from a fund-raising trip in New York and confirmed that the $4.1 million in donations is currently being transferred to cover the costs of the "first stage of restorations."

While the billionaire donors delay signing their checks, the workers at the cathedral can afford no such luxury as the risk of lead poisoning has become an issue for the Parisian island on which Notre Dame is located.
The estimated 300 tons of lead that made up the roof melted or was released into the atmosphere during the blaze, and sent toxic dust around the island with high levels present in the soils and in administrative buildings, according to Paris’ regional health agency. It has recommended that all pregnant women and children under 7 take a blood test for lead levels.
Two dedicated workers have been cleaning the toxic lead dust from the forecourt for weeks, and up to 148 more have been cleaning inside and outside the edifice as well as restoring it, according to Finot. -Associated Press

At present, workers are constructing a wooden walkway which will allow them to access and remove 250 tons of burnt-out scaffolding which had been in place for a restoration of the cathedral's iconic spire which was lost in the fire. They will then replace temporary plastic roofing with a more robust "umbrella roof," after which the reconstruction of the actual roof and vaulting will commence with the midsection.

French parliament, meanwhile, has been hammering out a new law which would create a "public body" to expedite the restoration of the cathedral in a way that would circumvent the country's notoriously bureaucratic labor laws. French President Emmanuel Macron says the rebuild should take five years, and has appointed former army chief Gen. Jean-Louis Georgelin to manage the reconstruction. Critics say the timeline is unrealistic.
Billionaires respond
Responding to AP, representatives from the billionaire donors confirmed that they're basically unwilling to contribute anything until designs are decided on, contracts are drawn up, and work is in progress.


Of course, it wouldn't take much to chip off a few million to pay the workers currently on-sitebefore contracts are inked and plans are in motion.
In short, wealthy French donors want their money to be spent on the 'long-lasting, immortalizing structures' and not the historical footnote of cleaning up the cathedral.

An accidental discovery of a 19th-century clock in a dusty church storage room in Paris has sparked hopes that it can be used to replace a timepiece destroyed in the fire at Notre-Dame cathedral.
The ruined clock in Notre-Dame, which measured two metres (6.5 feet) across, was located beneath the roof and spire of the Gothic monument which crashed down in the blaze that stunned France in April.
With original drawings lost and no digital records, photographs of the historic clock were the only clue experts had about how they might rebuild it.
Then French clockmaker Jean-Baptiste Viot stumbled across an almost identical version while completing an inventory last month at Saint Trinite church in northern Paris, four kilometres (2.5 miles) away from Notre-Dame.
"It's incredible. It's the same," he said. "It's like finding a second copy of a burned book."
The clock, which had been used in Saint Trinite until being replaced by an electric version more than 50 years ago, was found behind a wooden board next to statues and old furniture in a room accessible via a narrow staircase.
"It's almost a miracle," said Olivier Chandez, who is responsible for the upkeep of Notre-Dame's clock. "If we only had the photos, we would have to extrapolate. But with this model, we have all the dimensions".
Even if the clock is the same model, "there are a few differences", Chandez said. "Notre-Dame's clock was slightly more elaborate. It's therefore not possible to simply install the clock there".
