The cause is not yet clear, but officials say it could be linked to renovation work.

Images on social media show plumes of smoke billowing into the air above the the 850-year-old Gothic building.

Last year, the Catholic Church in France launched an urgent appeal for funds to save the cathedral, which was starting to crumble.

A major operation is under way to tackle the blaze, which broke out on Monday afternoon, and an area surrounding the building in central Paris has been cleared, officials said.

I doubt they will ever be able to replicate the beauty and craftsmanship that went into the creation of Notre-Dame. The spire was made of oak and lead and weighed 750 tons. I've heard it mentioned that there is 52 acres of wood in the entire structure. Also lost were religious items that cannot be replaced. A piece of the the Crown of Thorns and relics of Denis and Saint Genevieve.

A terrible loss of an architectural work of art.

I could be wrong but thought almost all or vast majority of French were Catholic, so such a view should not be relevant there unlike a Protestant majority nation like US where some on extreme ends may see catholic symbols as 'satanic symbols'.
This article seems to be pointing towards thieves, bored teens etc, that's quite a departure from recent history where generally foreign linked groups usually have been the first suspects. Although in recent Church fires in the West there have been also so called domestic 'hate crimes' like recent other Church fires also in US media news today. It is still bit extraordinary that media is quite cautious in not naming any suspect groups soon after an incidence like this.
