According to a notice on the Pentagon's website, the Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $789 million contract to the company SLSCO Ltd., from Galveston, Texas, for
"border replacement wall construction" in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. Barnard Construction Co. Inc., of Bozeman, Montana, was awarded a contract worth $187 million for "design-bid-build construction project for primary
pedestrian wall replacement" in Yuma, Arizona.
Six companies submitted bids for the first contract, with three received for the second. Both projects are expected to be completed by fall of 2020.
The money was allocated by Congress to fight drug smuggling. Most drugs are smuggled in cargo though main ports of entry. The larger project calls for 57 miles of existing wall to be replaced and the second will replace 32 miles of existing pedestrian barriers.
At the end of March, the Pentagon transferred $1 billion from the Department of Defense’s counter-drug budget to the Corps to support the construction of
57 miles of 18-foot-tall pedestrian fencing, road improvements and lighting upgrades.
Also in November, CBP awarded Barnard a $324 million contract to build
32 miles of primary pedestrian replacement wall — 5 miles in Arizona and 27 miles in Arizona.
Now just 400 miles short of the promised 400 miles of new wall construction.
