Senate votes to end US support for Yemen war

Lawmakers in the Republican-controlled chamber approved a historic curtailment of presidential war powers that directs Trump "to remove United States Armed Forces from hostilities in or affecting the Republic of Yemen" within 30 days.
The Senate vote was 54 to 46, with seven Republicans defying the president and aligning with Democrats.
The text now heads to the Democrat-led House of Representatives, which approved a similar measure that stalled earlier this year, and which is likely to pass the latest effort.
The White House has threatened a veto, calling the measure "flawed" and saying it would harm bilateral relationships in the region and hurt Washington's ability to fight extremism.
But its full passage would set a historic marker. It would be the first measure passed by Congress to invoke the 1973 War Powers Resolution to directly curtail a president's use of military powers.
"Today, we begin the process of reclaiming our constitutional power by ending US involvement in a war that has not been authorized by Congress and is clearly unconstitutional," Senator Bernie Sanders, who is running for president in 2020 and is a sponsor of the measure, said on the Senate floor.
Republican Senator Mike Lee concurred, saying Saudi Arabia "is not an ally that deserves our support or our military intervention."
The Saudis, he said, "are likely using our own weapons... to commit these atrocities of war. That's not OK."

Trump will be looking for that veto pen this week. Thursday the Senate votes on his "emergency" declaration and with Rand Paul's help are not going to make him happy.

If it's not faknews, it would be very good news.

But thinking about cuase of this shift, looking at recent track record Senate tends to be a pro interventions/pro occupations/pro war body when it comes to any allies with deep pockets, what changed now? Was this related to drying up of money from any foreign oily dictatorship or Senate is now genuinely anti unnecessary war bloodbath/pro peace following the midterm elections?

Its not really anti war. I read that the bill has a provision that would still allow the US to continue their involvement in the war just as long as they say they are fighting AQAP and not the Yemeni people. The democrats are uber frauds.

SECTION 1. REMOVAL OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES FROM HOSTILITIES IN THE REPUBLIC OF YEMEN THAT HAVE NOT BEEN AUTHORIZED BY CONGRESS.

Pursuant to section 1013 of the Department of State Authorization Act, Fiscal Years 1984 and 1985 (50 U.S.C. 1546a) and in accordance with the provisions of section 601(b) of the International Security Assistance and Arms Export Control Act of 1976 (Public Law 94–329; 90 Stat. 765), Congress hereby directs the President to remove United States Armed Forces from hostilities in or affecting the Republic of Yemen, except United States Armed Forces engaged in operations directed at al Qaeda or associated forces, by not later than the date that is 30 days after the date of the adoption of this joint resolution (unless the President requests and Congress authorizes a later date), and unless and until a declaration of war or specific authorization for such use of United States Armed Forces has been enacted. For purposes of this resolution, in this section, the term “hostilities” includes in-flight refueling of non-United States aircraft conducting missions as part of the ongoing civil war in Yemen.

He's gonna get a lot of threats to veto it. Lets see if he has the willpower to sign it.

I'm pretty sure the Yemeni people in general are associated with Al Qaeda forces. I'm glad congress agrees we should keep bombing them.

Hehe, maybe Trump will veto this sham of a bill and ask for one that actually restricts the military activity in that country. And I will win the jackpot lottery tomorrow

This is an insult to the whole institution, they could use the power of the purse but are too gutless so they want to take away the credibility of Trump's judgement by sending legislation to his desk that says he is not competent in his job.
