Exclamation McConnell opens door to changing president's emergency powers

To stop a future Dem president for calling an emergency on climate or guns:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) signaled on Tuesday that he is open to changing the president's national emergency powers as support grows within the GOP caucus for amending the National Emergencies Act.

"We're looking at some ways to revisit the law. There's a lot of discomfort with the law. ... Was it too broad back in the '70s when it was passed? So yeah, we're discussing altering that," McConnell told reporters during a weekly press conference.

A growing number of Republican senators have expressed interest in amending the National Emergencies Act to make it easier for Congress to terminate a national emergency.

The discussion is focused on future national emergencies but comes days before the Senate will vote on a House-passed resolution of disapproval blocking Trump's emergency declaration at the border.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) is expected to introduce legislation that would require Congress to vote to approve future national emergency declarations within 30 days before they automatically expire.

McConnell, asked if he would support Lee's legislation, told reporters that he "may well" back it.

Surprised no Democratic president yet has declared an emergency on guns.

It boggles the mind that something like this isn't already the case.

They will need a veto proof majority. You’d think this may be one case where that could actually be done.

Why only future? Why not include past emergency declarations including Trumps border one after 30 days?

But GOP officials say Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee announced to colleagues that Trump was opposing his legislation.

So as Brian said, they need a veto proof majority

McConnell basically wanted to say "we will let him do this once- and then nobody else can do it." Pelosi says she won't bring his bill to the House floor.

By saying she would not bring Lee’s bill to the floor, Pelosi aimed to take away an exit ramp for the GOP.

“Republican Senators are proposing new legislation to allow the President to violate the Constitution just this once in order to give themselves cover,” the California Democrat said in a statement Wednesday. “The House will not take up this legislation to give President Trump a pass.”

Lee has expressed concerns about executive overreach but has so far not said whether he wants to terminate the emergency declared at the southern border.

His bill would not affect Trump’s executive action.

This is good, Congress gave the President emergency powers and it is Congress that should take them away.

Trump says worry about the wall- not the Constitution.

Would it pass Pelosi, congress and Trumps veto if it could be applied retrocatively to emergency declarations including Trumps border? Why not find out?
