Thread: Veto/Repeal by popular vote?

  1. #1

    Question Veto/Repeal by popular vote?

Direct Democracy is dangerous because it allows people to oppress eachother with simple majorities but would it actually be good to allow people to veto or repeal laws by popular referendum?

Should it be absolute? Or should the legislature be able to override it like a Presidential veto?

Should it require a simple majority or a 2/3rds vote?

I think repealing laws by majority may not really be imposing on others . They can still probably adhere to the law personally if they wish . Most laws passed by congress would not make it if they needed a majority of people vote . I would start with weed legalization and elimination of daylight saving time on day one . On day two if someone does not want to smoke weed and pretend they got more daylight , let them.

it could be used as an experiment for repeal of existing law . Since congress never repeals any law .

I would support a variation of this, but only if it was done as a series of votes instead of just one.

Step 1. Vote on whether or not to hold a referendum to repeal a bill
Step 2. Vote on the referendum to repeal the bill
Step 3. Vote on a resolution to agree to implement the referendum to repeal the bill
Step 4. Vote on the language of the bill that implements the referendum to appeal the bill
Step 5. Vote on the bill that implements the referendum to appeal the bill

Every step above is completely necessary. Brexit has proven that simply voting on a referendum isn't enough to get it done. So if you want to get something done, get it done right.
