This story turned out to be a microcosm of America today. Both sides were able to see what they wanted to see based on their own perspectives and experiences. Then some on both sides started expressing hatred (ironically) against the perceived hatred by some on the other side.

They do seem to be enjoying using that card, don't they? What these people don't realize is, the more they use that card the less credit they get. The powers that be benefit from division in the population, but no one else does. Equality is a boon. It leads to opportunity, liberty, and ultimately, it's an aid to prosperity. Whites as a whole have never benefitted from institutionalized racism. Whether slavery or Jim Crow, the effect on the vast majority of southern American whites was to make them easier to fleece.

A short video clip of student Nick Sandmann supposedly “smirking” as Mr. Phillips banged his drum in the student’s face went viral, and instantly the boys of Covington Catholic in Kentucky were branded racists.

Best-selling author Reza Aslan tweeted that the high school junior had a “punchable face.” Former Democratic Party chief Howard Dean opined that Covington Catholic is “a hate factory.” GQ’s Nathaniel Friedman urged people to “Doxx ‘em all,” i.e., make their personal information public.

Meanwhile, mainstream news outlets published misleading accounts of what happened based on incomplete information. And pundits on the right and left rushed to demonstrate their own virtue by trashing high school students as somehow symptomatic of America’s cultural rot in the Age of Trump.

Only it turns out there was a much longer video, nearly two hours, showing that almost everything first reported about the confrontation was false, or at least much more complicated. The boys had been taunted by a group of Black Hebrew Israelites, who shouted racist and homophobic slurs. Far from the boys confronting Mr. Phillips, he confronted them as they were waiting near the Lincoln Memorial for their bus.

It also turns out that Mr. Phillips is not the Vietnam veteran he was reported to be in most stories. On Tuesday the Washington Post offered a correction, noting that while Mr. Phillips served in the Marines from 1972 to 1976, he was “never deployed to Vietnam.”

Some of the students did respond to Mr. Phillips by doing the Tomahawk Chop, and it would have been better had they all walked away. But on the whole these teenagers were calm amid the provocations and far less incendiary than the adults who taunted them and the progressive high priests who denounced them.

The new information has people who had so eagerly cast the first stones hastily deleting their tweets. Still, it is telling that some of the most disgusting tweets were the work of the blue-check elites who pride themselves on their tolerance. More surprising is the rush to judgment by those who might have been expected to consider the boys innocent until proven guilty, or at least until all the evidence is in.

On Saturday the boys’ school issued a joint statement with the Covington Diocese saying they “condemn” the students for their actions and were considering appropriate action “including expulsion.” A post on National Review said the boys might as well have “just spit on the cross.” And the March for Life distanced itself from the “reprehensible behavior” of the marchers from Covington.

Many of these early critics have now apologized or walked back their initial condemnations. But these social injustices perpetrated on social media are not so easily redressed. Covington Catholic was closed Tuesday for security reasons.

Most of those who so eagerly maligned these boys will face no lasting consequences, while the boys themselves will always have to wonder, when they are turned down for a job or a school, whether someone had Googled their name and found only half this story. This is an ugly moment in America, all right, but there are few things uglier than a righteous leftist mob.

A letter to the mother of a vocal Parkland teen who has taken on the nation’s gun advocates was simple, direct, and especially threatening, authorities say.

The young activist's mother, who works as an elementary school teacher, told The Washington Post that her family has received multiple death threats. "I'm under so much stress," Rebecca Boldrick said. "I'm angry and exhausted. Angry, exhausted and extremely proud."

Boldrick's son, an aspiring broadcast journalist, is not the only survivor of the shooting who has become a target for online threats.

Another student, Cameron Kasky, 17, said he had felt forced to leave Facebook after receiving death threats from "NRA cultists."

Social media giants have recently been working to intervene in online attacks against the student survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The family of 17-year-old student activist David Hogg has gone to the FBI after receiving death threats on social media. Hogg survived the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, and has since been an advocate for gun control reform.

Hogg’s mother, Rebecca Boldrick, shared that she received a particularly disturbing comment on one of her Facebook photos, from an NRA supporter, TMZ reported. The message read, “You can change your settings, but you can never change your faces, your whole family is exposed because of your piece of $#@! kid, btw his whole plan has backfired on him, i’m sure his birthday celebration will be an interesting event… $#@! you and him God Bless the NRA and the right to bear arms, wrong crowd to $#@! with idiotsticks.”

She then went to the FBI, since the Hoggs are viewing such messages as death threats. Another Facebook message read, “You should have had an abortion. Your son is a psychopathic douche bag. Drive the whole family over a cliff, just admit failure.”

Freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., has apparently deleted an overnight tweet going after Covington Catholic students anew, after facing a social media backlash for her comments.

Her tweet had been posted well after the initial round of misreporting on the students' widely viewed confrontation with a Native-American elder in Washington last week. Media figures initially seized on the viral confrontation with Nathan Phillips, with an initial clip appearing to show the students antagonizing him. But additional video then emerged offering context, including that Phillips approached them amid a confrontation between the students and Black Hebrew Israelite protesters. The students pushed back on the initial criticism, and many of those critics have since retracted their statements.

But Omar on Tuesday night responded to President Trump’s tweet defending Covington student Nick Sandmann and his peers -- by claiming they were taunting the black protesters despite accounts to the contrary and citing a videotaped comment about rape, though it's unclear whether it was one of the Covington students who said it.

She wrote: "The boys were protesting a woman's right to choose & yelled 'it's not rape if you enjoy it' ... They were taunting 5 Black men before they surrounded Phillips and led racist chants ... Sandmann's family hired a right wing PR firm to write his non-apology."

But after an avalanche of criticism, the tweet had been removed by late morning on Wednesday.

Omar faced accusations of lying and distorting the facts in response to her original tweet.

The newly elected representative was also criticized for a tweet claiming that Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., was “compromised,” admitting later to CNN that it was an “opinion.”
