What a biased piece of journalistic vomit. They push the attackers side of the story, and then they insinuate that Rand is getting this treatment paid for by Canada. Fake news.

In Canada, medical care is publicly funded and universally provided through the country's Provincial Ministry of Health, and everyone receives the same level of care.

Paul has called universal health care and nationalized options "slavery."

updated with quote from Rand's spokesperson

Kelsey Cooper, a spokeswoman for Paul, said the hospital is privately owned and people come from around the globe for their services. The hospital's website outlines payments it accepts, including cash, check or credit card for those patients who are not covered by Ontario's insurance plan for its residents or a provincial health insurance plan.

“This is more fake news on a story that has been terribly reported from day one — this is a private, world renowned hospital separate from any system and people come from around the world to pay cash for their services,” Cooper said in an email to the Courier Journal.

Story is at the top of r/politics. I don't understand why people are making a big deal out of this, especially since it's a private hospital and the only one in the world that specializes in hernias. The comments are disgusting.

Yikes at that thread. Naa, couldn't be that Rand just wants the best in the world to perform the procedure and he has the money to pay it. Then it morphs into a thread about Ayn Rand. Look! Shiny thing!

The USA Today still article hasn't been updated to reflect that it's a private hospital, unfortunately.

Shouldice Hospital is fantastic, I went there twice for surgery to repair three hernias and they don't use that disgusting mesh for hernia repair.

They are the gold standard in hernia repair.

I can see why he would go there rather than suffer from a failed mesh repair later.

don't doubt for a second that his team released this information just so that this would happen. I can't wait for the first talking head to question him about it.

So the hernie op is costing 4-8k. Rand earns 170k/year as a senator plus significant income as a highly successful author, plus he's just going to get the money back in his civil suit against the attacker. It's hard to understand the outrage here.

Funny, 19 years ago that surgery only cost me $1500. I suspect the the people who wrote that article may be trying to make it cost more than it really does.

This article is a good reminder that the press is the enemy of free people. That article is just mouth breathing clickbait propaganda.

And they also doubled down on the spin:

While Shouldice Hernia Hospital is privately owned — like many Canadian hospitals — it receives a majority of its funding from the Ontario government and accepts the Ontario’s Hospital Insurance Plan.

Brian, the CJ is very liberal. This is what Rand is up against in KY. He manages to cut through the liberal press though and is doing well both in approvals and elections. Please consider supporting him with a donation.

Even if socialized medicine works, it doesn't mean it's morally right. It's the right thing to do to make all systems work without stealing money from the public, and without crippling regulations.

Republicans are fighting for a multi-billion dollar boondoggle that can be defeated by any old aircraft--or a few determined people with ten dollar shovels. Democrats are fighting for a couple of brown-baby-bombing wars that benefit only oil companies and pharmaceutical companies.

If what is morally right entered into the equation, you wouldn't have pro-boondoggle "conservatives" and pro-imperialist corporate welfare wars "liberals". People stand for nothing (both Team Red and Team Blue certainly mean nothing today) and they're falling for anything and everything.

Morally right? If the public gave what's morally right a moment's consideration, we would indeed all be much, much better off.

But they don't. Or, rather, those who do get banned from Facebook and are never heard from again.

It only works well in isolated cases and for a certain amount of time. It's not sustainable.

Media fails spectacularly at smearing Rand Paul for surgery in Canada

Sen. Rand Paul's (R-Ky.) announcement that he will be traveling to Canada for hernia surgery is one that should be taught in journalism classes of how not to cover a story.

You may have heard that Paul is in need of said surgery after being physically attacked at his home in 2017 by a neighbor. The senator ended up in the hospital for weeks. The neighbor was charged with assault and sentenced to 30 days in prison.

Fast forward to 2019: Paul needs hernia surgery, one of the injuries he suffered in the attack. He chooses a hospital in Canada, leading to the big "gotcha!" moment some in media pounced on.

Lousiville's Courier Journal's lead paragraph: "Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, one of the fiercest political critics of socialized medicine, will travel to Canada later this month to get hernia surgery."

Get it? Paul is against socialized medicine. Yet, when he needs treatment himself, he forfeits his principles.

One has to read down to the sixth paragraph before learning that the hospital performing the surgery, Shouldice Hospital, is privately owned.

The story also appeared in USA Today, since the Courier Journal and USA Today fall under the Gannett Co. umbrella.

So, as long as the paper eventually gets it right deep into the story, who cares, right?

Not quite. We live in a world of news consumers increasingly scrolling headlines and short-story blurbs on social media without reading the whole story. It's a fast-food journalist world, making it more crucial than ever for publications to tell the real story in its headlines and blurbs/lead paragraphs.
    ...
Washington correspondent for the Toronto Star Daniel Dale tweeted the hospital "is one of a very small number of private, for-profit clinics that were grandfathered into Ontario's socialized health system."
