Trump to cut FEMA funding for California wildfires

On Wednesday morning, Trump complained that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sends billions of dollars to California to fight fires that are the result of poor forest management.

“Billions of dollars are sent to the State of California for Forrest [sic] fires that, with proper Forrest [sic] Management, would never happen. Unless they get their act together, which is unlikely, I have ordered FEMA to send no more money. It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money!” Trump tweeted.

Will he send more rakes so they can rake the forests and prevent fires? Maybe some brooms?

Trump Says Finland Prevents Wildfires by 'Raking' Forests. Finland Isn't Sure What He's Talking About

President Donald Trump appears to believe that forest fires, such as those that have devastated parts of California this month, can be prevented with some judicious raking—and he believes he believes this because the Finnish president told him so.

However, the president of Finland has no idea what Trump is going on about.

“You’ve got to take care of the floors. You know the floors of the forests, it’s very important,” Trump said amid the ruins of the town of Paradise, which was entirely razed by the Camp Fire. He added that President Sauli Niinisto of the “forest nation” of Finland told him “they spent a lot of time on raking and cleaning and doing things, and they don’t have any problem.”
The Finnish resistance to forest fires is not due to raking, but rather the country’s extensive forest road network—which helps firefighters move quickly and also slows down fires—and the fact that so much of the Finnish forest is privately owned. That means many small sections of the forest are cleared or thinned out, and therefore don’t easily let fires spread. Finland is also full of rivers, lakes and wetlands.

I think there should be forest management. Thinning of trees. Sell contracts so timber can be harvested.

    Finland does rake its forests;
the Finnish are world leaders in biomass energy.

Raking in forestry has nothing to do with yard rakes used by hand to move leaves.

    This is a slash rake:

    http://www.wilco.co.nz/slashrake.html

This is the purpose of slash raking:

    https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry...ep/raking.html

This is the public funded by Californians 2018 Little Hoover report, which makes a very clear and concise case on the state of California's

    poor forest management
    :

    https://lhc.ca.gov/sites/lhc.ca.gov/.../Report242.pdf

Finland's biomass raked off of its forest floors and converted to "black liquor" which then becomes terrawatts of renewable electrical energy:

    https://imisrise.tappi.org/TAPPI/Pro.../05EPE182.aspx

Finland is a world leader in this process:

    https://bioenergyinternational.com/o...ass-for-energy

Unfortunately very little of the biomass in the US is used to create electricity; its mostly just burned off on site or pushed into rows to prevent downhill erosion during reforestation. Most US forest is managed by federal and state bureaucracy; mismanagement is to be expected.

In the two maps below you can see states which prescribe controlled burns of raked biomass and states which endure wildfires:

After the image above one should stop and reflect (mind you I'm shooting from hip on these statistics but roughly):

    - East half of the US 80% of forest is PRIVATE

    - West half of the US 80% of forest is PUBLIC

it should also be noted, again from the hip:

    - US: 50% of forest is public, 25% is corporate, 25% is family owned.

    - Finland: 25% of forest is public, 15% is corporate, 60% is family owned.

Note the lack of ACRES of prescribed burn in the huge state of California.

when pondering the scale 1001-50,000 acres of prescribed burn annually in cali...

    note

    1) the "Camp Fire" alone consumed 150,000 acres.
    2) California has 33,000,000 acres of forest
    3) about a million acres are consumed annually by wildfire

This is what correctly thinned, well managed timber looks like after slashed piles have been raked:

This is what a forest fire looks like before its a forest fire:

This is a slash harvesting machine in Finland picking up raked biomass:

Finland then chips the raked slash before using as fuel:

In the past 40 years, biomass and black liquor have become major contributors to Finland's power grid:

You have been saving up that massive post for a while eh?

Also important to note that the Western US is considerably drier than the Eastern US (and Finland). Sweden had some major wildfires.

Actually , some slash raking would help some places in california and they should be paying for it because they should own the land .
    Do something Danke

In South Carolina they go along the roads with big tractors. They have huge circular saws on them. They keep the limbs trimmed with ease. I think in years past places like Colorado allowed firewood gathering. I think they marked the trees with spray paint. Sometimes controlled burns are the solution to renew the ground and growth.

Those (in Colorado) were trees killed by a pine beetle which killed thousands of trees. They encouraged cutting not to reduce fire risks (well, kinda since the dead trees would burn easier) but to try to control the spread of the beetles. Colorado does regularly face forest fires.

In hopes of staving off complete catastrophe, the United States Forest Service, which oversees 80 percent of the country’s woodlands, has launched a beetle offensive, chopping down trees to prevent future infestations. The USFS believes this strategy reduces trees’ competition for resources, allowing the few that remain to better resist invading bugs. This theory just so happens to also benefit loggers, who are more than willing to help thin the forests. Politicians, too, have jumped on board, often on behalf of the timber industry: More than 50 bills introduced since 2001 in Congress proposed increasing timber harvests in part to help deal with beetle outbreaks.
A healthy tree can usually beat back invading beetles by deploying chemical defenses and flooding them out with sticky resin. But just as dehydration makes humans weaker, heat and drought impede a tree’s ability to fight back—less water means less resin. In some areas of the Rocky Mountain West, the mid-2000s was the driest, hottest stretch in 800 years. From 2000 to 2012, bark beetles killed enough trees to cover the entire state of Colorado. “Insects reflect their environment,” explains renowned entomologist Ken Raffa—they serve as a barometer of vast changes taking place in an ecosystem.

The trees I speak of were not dead and marked with paint. This was 40 years ago.

I remember it- I used to live in Colorado and still have family there. My dad would go up to cut some for firewood. They would mark trees already dead.

Since most of the forests are federal lands, doesn't that make Trump responsible for maintaining them?

won't vote for him anyway.....haha, sarc folks, just kidding, don't throw your fema shirts at me.
