The quake was 24 miles deep and centered 116 km southeast of Kagoshima. There has been no immediate reports of any damage or casualties. United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the large earthquake hit at 12.39pm GMT (9.39pm local time). The epicentre was located 117km (73 miles) away from the city of Kagoshima on Japan’s Kyushu Island, hitting at a depth of 35km. Earthquakes are very common in Japan, which is one of the world’s most seismically active areas.
