Rand Paul: ‘The Deep State Needs More Oversight’

    by Sean Moran

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) delivered a fiery speech on the Senate floor Wednesday, contending that the “deep state needs more oversight.”
Sen. Paul delivered a speech on the Senate floor on Wednesday, contending that Congress needs more oversight power over the American government’s secret drone program which would allow the government to “to kill anyone, anywhere, anytime” and serves as “an ominous power.”

Paul suggested the program has a lack of checks and balances.

The Kentucky conservative slammed the fact that the intelligence community informs only a select few members of Congress and that the intel community usually only tells them after the fact.

“What happens is you get imperfect and not very good oversight,” Sen. Paul said on the Senate floor. “The checks and balances are not working because the only people being told about what the intelligence community is doing are the people who are rubber stamps for what they are doing.”

Sen. Paul mentioned that he has yet to receive answers regarding his concerns over the American government’s drone program over whether the government kills people around the world based on bulk collection of metadata.

Paul also called for greater accountability to America’s drone program.

    What the hell? More OVERSIGHT?

If the "deep state" exists, it needs to be bagged, rendered, and killed unto utter extinction.

This is why nobody in politics can be trusted... equivocation smacking of tolerance for the intolerable. Trump: "drain the swamp". Sure... then why the hell is Clinton, et al, still breathing? Right or wrong, Trump has the power under PATRIOT and the various NDAAs to apprehend the swamp creatures, spirit them away to Gitmo, put them before a military tribunal, execute them, and bury them under the jail. Yet, nothing happens. We are the willing suckers to the vermin who masquerade as our "protectors".

Talk talk talk is all these bastards do. Talk talk talk, keeping the rest of us stupid bastards on the ends of the string.

We are drowning in bull$#@! and do NOTHING to help ourselves.

    Bloody hell.

That has nothing to do with a public statement such as this. More so, if it is a tactic, it is very ill considered to put your enemies on alert. Otherwise, what could it be other than grandstanding? If there is such a thing as a "deep state" and its nature is as commonly taken, which is to say that it is rather dangerous, then you don't talk about it, much less make fool statements such as the one captioned. You work quietly, build support for a strike, and maybe one day execute. Until then you keep your yap shut.

Or is someone going to tell me that, as with Trump, this is all part of some grand subtle strategy so oblique that an idiot such as myself is incapable of seeing?

This smacks of theater. The "deep state" doesn't need to be overseen. Is he friggin' kidding? What is the purpose of a fool statement like that? The only thing that makes any sense to me is that it is theater, whether intentionally so or simply the result of having marinated in the septic tank we call "DC". After all, how can anyone braise in such filth for years and not have it soak into their pores... the culture... the way of thinking... coming to believe that X will yield Y because that's what everyone else does in good old DC.

Jesus... deep state isn't cannabis... you don't legalize and regulate it. You destroy it. Find the people and kill them because regardless of their intentions, their agenda leads to poverty, servitude, disease, death, misery, and nothing better.

Seriously - what the $#@! is wrong with people? The world is fixing to fly apart at the seams at the hands of madmen and nobody does anything beyond rioting in Paris? Politicians, even the esteemed Rand Paul, blather on about nonsense like "rule of law" and, sweet Jesus, "oversight"... perpetuating the bull$#@! that is the lie of "government". So sorry, but this smells more than a little self-serving... or insanely ignoring of reality.

Or perhaps I'm just $#@!ing crazy and everyone should devotedly not pay any attention to a word.

In the United States, the term "deep state" was used to describe "a hybrid association of government elements and parts of top-level industry and finance that is effectively able to govern the United States

without reference to the consent of the governed

as expressed through the formal political process."

'We endorse the idea of voluntarism; self-responsibility: Family, friends, and churches to solve problems, rather than saying that some monolithic government is going to make you take care of yourself and be a better person. It's a preposterous notion: It never worked, it never will. The government can't make you a better person; it can't make you follow good habits.' - Ron Paul 1988

I think Rand is talking about unelected bureaucrats that work in the various agencies that don't change from administration to administration. With this definition, you will always have a "deep state". The problem is that with no oversight, these people can direct the governance. Proper oversight is really the key, here.

The alternative would be to have elections for every level of government employee. (maybe that's not such a bad idea...)

Take a breath. See my post above. You're applying a different context than Rand. You see the "deep state" as bureaucrats that are directing the politicians. Rand is applying it more globally to apply it to ALL bureaucrats, whether they are doing that or not.

For example, your city's plow driver is an unelected employee. Given enough influence, he could direct the city council on their decisions on which roads to plow and when. Or, he could just do what they tell him. Without oversight, you'd never know the difference.

Irrelevant. ANYONE, regardless of sub rosa associations and agendas, who acts to violate YOU should meet with a grizzly death. Period.

The precise reason we live in a giant, open-air prison is because we tolerate that which must never be tolerated in any manner or degree. ANYONE serving as a public employee, office holder, appointee, or what have you, should quake in terror at the merest wisp of a thought that they might cross those whom they swear and oath to serve. And yes, I believe that beyond a certain line, however it may be objectively defined, any government instrument should be put to death and its family reduced to utter ruin. That would give them much to consider prior to acting, which is as it should be. Government should operate in a state of perpetual, nearly paralytic fear of doing the wrong things, no exceptions; not even janitors.

For example, your city's plow driver is an unelected employee. Given enough influence, he could direct the city council on their decisions on which roads to plow and when. Or, he could just do what they tell him. Without oversight, you'd never know the difference.
if that is what Rand meant, then he should say it that way. Broad statements can only be taken as they are given. Language and communications skills, my friend, are $#@!ING IMPORTANT.

People are so common in their carelessness with words and that $#@! will not end well for humanity. EVERYTHING we do roots in words. No exceptions. Even physical gestures suggesting this or that come to be in this world at this time through some semantic thread that ALWAYS leads back to words and how we employ them.

Mean humanity is so bloody ignorant, I am truly amazed we have come this far without wiping ourselves out.
