Hawaiian monk seals baffle scientists by getting eels stuck in their noses

In a recent photo shared on Facebook by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program (HMSRP), a Hawaiian monk seal lies against green foliage with a white-and-brown spotted eel hanging from its nostril.
“Mondays… it might not have been a good one for you but it had to be better than an eel in your nose,” the HMSRP captioned the photo.
The unlucky situation led many to raise questions on Facebook, where the photo has been shared more than 1,200 times.
But, according to the HMSRP, the incident is just the latest in a phenomenon that was first recorded in 2016 - and researchers don’t actually know why it keeps happening.

They say the Caribbean Monk Seal is extinct . The Hawaiian Monk seal is the only mammal there in those islands except the Hoary Bat . There is one other Monk Seal species , The Med Monk seal . Galapagos Sharks , Tigers and Great Whites feed on them . There are even fewer Med Monk Seals they say . They were hunted by Whalers for meat , oil and skins .

Considering that the seal could bite the eel in half at any time, the seal must like it for some reason. Maybe the eel clears the seal’s nasal passage.

There must be some benefit to the eels as well since it keeps happening.

Very cute. Maybe Danke will get me one for Christmas.

Mr A told me no more pets since my Doge passed away but recently, I started having dreams of cats. Specifically, I bring home a bunch of cats and toss them on him to test his allergicness to different cats. I've been having this dream since First Thanksgiving at my moms when he was around her crazy ass cat Socks and he didn't have so much as a sniffle. I looked up what cat dreams mean on the internet but the answers were not helpful so I ended up looking at cute cat gifs, instead and decided I probably just want a cat. An orange tabby. All my cats have been orange tabbies- Dr Smith who became known as Smitty the $#@!ty kitty and when I was older, I had one named Kitty. I'm pretty good at naming animals. I had a pet rabbit I named Rabbonie, stuffed Lamb I got for Easter I named Lambie, and if I had a bat, I'd probably name it Batty or Hoary the Bat.

Maybe they use the eel as bait.

When some fish comes up to grab the eel, the seal grabs the fish.

Earlier this week, the Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program (HMSRP) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) posted a bizarre and rather troubling photograph on social media. The snapshot, which amassed hundreds of comments on Facebook and was shared more than 1,000 times, showed a Hawaiian monk seal with a spotted eel stuck up its nose.
Although the unlucky seal — a juvenile, by all accounts — didn’t seem too bothered by the sticky situation in which it mysteriously ended up, field researchers rushed to the scene to help the poor animal get free from its unwanted baggage, reports CNet.
The situation was resolved through “light restraint of the seal and a slow steady pull to get the eel out,” notes Motherboard, citing sources from the seal program. While the pup seems to be doing well, the eel was less fortunate and did not survive the peculiar incident.

In an update to this confounding story, the NOAA offers an explanation as to how the two animals might have ended up in this lamentable circumstance. According to the agency, there are two possible scenarios: either the eel was cornered into a tight spot and wound up in the seal’s nose by mistake while it was trying to defend itself or escape, or the seal swallowed the elongated fish and regurgitated its prey out the wrong way.
