Trump could be the first president since Carter to run for re-election during a recession

It's from MSM, so should not be blindly trusted.
Although bit confused, if Trump is borrowing so much money from China and others to increase government spending to stimulate economy for wall Street and give tax cuts, how could that possibly lead to slow down? Never heard before that sky rocketting of debt can cause recession.

Donald Trump could be the first president since Jimmy Carter to run for re-election during a recession

    • Until now, Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation has loomed as a singular threat to further erode the President Trump's standing.
    • But the uncertainty on display in gyrating financial markets this week has darkened expectations for Trump's last two years.
    • Trump suddenly faces rising odds of becoming the first president to seek re-election during economic recession since Jimmy Carter. That would represent an ominous sign for the president's chances of a second term.

U.S President Donald Trump pauses while speaking to members of the media before boarding Marine One for Florida on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018.

Beyond his legal problems, Donald Trump suddenly faces rising odds of becoming the first president to seek re-election during economic recession since Jimmy Carter.
Until now, Robert Mueller's special counsel investigation has loomed as a singular threat to further erode the president's standing. That reflects both the gravity of a probe that has produced guilty pleas from multiple Trump associates, and the robustness of growth during the first two years of his term.

To be fair, he ( with help from Fed Chairman Greenspan) was trying to stimulate economy while keep funding flowing for important Iraqi freedom war.

With Recession Looming, Bush Tells America To ‘Go Shopping More’

    Amanda Terkel Dec 20, 2006

Today, President Bush held a news conference where he discussed the “way forward” for the economy in 2007. Renowned Morgan Stanley economist Steven Roach says the the “odds of the U.S. economy tipping into recession are about 40 to 45 per cent.” New York Times columnist Paul Krugman notes that “the odds are very good — maybe 2 to 1,” that the U.S. will teeter toward a recession in 2007. Bush’s solution? “Go shopping more.” Watch it:

On a side note, Bush has never been properly credited for investing lot of money and lives in nobel Iraqi Freedom sacrifice and historic election of Barack Hussein Obama. If MAGA's Iran freedom and other foreign interventions initiatives now led to election of Al Syrian Hussein Cortez few years later, he should be remembered and given credit due.
