Ocasio-Cortez says she paid twice as much for insurance as a waitress as she will in Congress

The anti GOP-Adelson wing, anti-neocon , anti-war rookie slash youngest Dem is in headlines again:

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she paid twice as much for insurance as a waitress as she will in Congress

Watch Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez speak after winning Congressional election

A year ago, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was working as a waitress. In January, she'll begin her term representing New York's 14th District as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.
In recent weeks Ocasio-Cortez has remained characteristically transparent, discussing her difficulties renting an apartment in Washington D.C. and live-streaming conversations with her constituents while she cooks dinner.
Over the weekend, the Congresswoman-elect said that the health insurance she will receive as a member of Congress will cost significantly less than the health insurance she paid for as a waitress. "In my on-boarding to Congress, I get to pick my insurance plan," the 29-year-old tweeted. "As a waitress, I had to pay more than TWICE what I'd pay as a member of Congress."

Well, she COULD refuse her govt subsidized insurance and buy it on her own dime like others have done. Probably cost her less than her grey hair.

Why... Someone please tell me WHY has this young... erm... "woman" failed to drink gasoline?

Seriously - WHY? She seems so devoted to the right things, and drinking gasoline is SO the right thing for her to do.

The world no longer makes sense to me.

I dislike her a lot but what is wrong with what she said? As someone who pays for his own insurance, the individual health insurance market is insane in this country.

I honestly don't know how a hair stylist or some other self-employed person in their 50s with a family who makes more a more medium income can afford insurance. This is an issue Republicans have to deal with or else more extreme people like Sanders and this woman will win the debate.

Our solutions have zero political support. Heck, I do not even think it should be a federal issue.
    * Enforce Border Security – America should be guarding her own borders and enforcing her own laws instead of policing the world and implementing UN mandates.

    * No Amnesty - The Obama Administration’s endorsement of so-called “Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, will only encourage more law-breaking.

    * Abolish the Welfare State – Taxpayers cannot continue to pay the high costs to sustain this powerful incentive for illegal immigration. As Milton Friedman famously said, you can’t have open borders and a welfare state.

    * End Birthright Citizenship – As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be granted U.S. citizenship, we’ll never be able to control our immigration problem.

While I agree with what you said, here is the dilemma. If you leave it up to people to save and pay for their own stuff, you want to know what will happen? They won't buy insurance. You want to know who is going to end up paying their bills? Me. People also don't save and when they do save they have all sorts of brain-dead ideas and try to time markets. The average 401k investor gets a return that is like 80% less than the market because they sell out of stock in 2008 and wait to get back in.

I am not sure what the solution is but it seems like the choice is between pure socialism or using the heavy hand of government to make people behave correctly. I would rather have a Sinagapore system where they force you to save and tell you how to save and make you put money into an HSA and make you buy insurance than what is going to happen otherwise. Freedom is unlikely to be on the menu.

The answer is to get .gov out of the medical/insurance business; they have absolutely no business being involved except to help cronyism.

Question? Why are we (not just RPF, but the entire social media and media apparatus) making this Zero wannabe into a relevant rock star by giving her so much press.

Is it because she's a nobody who won?

She's trying to drum up outrage so she can get folks clamoring for Medicare for All.

Yeah, insurance prices suck but just wait until you see how much free insurance costs.

OCASIO-CORTEZ GUNNING FOR POWERFUL COMMITTEE, SETTING UP SHOWDOWN WITH LONG ISLAND DEMOCRAT

    ...

Any major piece of legislation — whether it’s “Medicare for All,” a “Green New Deal,” or free public college — would involve some level of revenue, putting it squarely in the domain of Ways and Means, which makes it a key spot for a legislator looking to have an impact. Ocasio-Cortez is routinely asked how she plans to pay for her aggressive economic agenda, and the first answer begins with securing a spot on the House’s key tax-writing committee.

Right. I am all for freedom and take responsibility. Here is the problem. I just helped someone with their insurance and benefits. They make a good income in management in the auto industry. Smart person. Didn't choose the HSA option with health insurance. Very poor decisions and I am sure that is standard.

Truthfully, I would rather someone from CATO or the Heritage Foundation just set up a system like Singapore and force people to behave correctly. I know it isn't libertarian. I also know the life will be better for just about everyone with that kind of paternalism.

It is great to say just get government out of health care. Super. That is never going to happen. Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, the huge health insurance industry built on tax breaks to provide insurance to private employers, the VA System are like 95% of the health insurance market. It isn't just going to eliminated. That isn't close to be an option under anyone. Not under Ron Paul. Not under Gary Johnson. Not under President Murray Rothbard's ghost. So you can either propose solutions that will be less terrible or get single payer.

    1. She's a totally reliable statist tool.

    2. When she holds her face in that one blank expression she's pretty, but the rest of the time she's one of the goofiest looking people you ever saw. That sort of thing arrests the attention of kids the age of Millenials.

But of course that won't be the lesson learned, that government $#@!ery caused that insane price and is also insulating her now.

The lesson learned will be, we need more extortion.

Sometimes she's celeberated as "female Obama" , she's been getting lots of coverage in media, so could be fishy that media is not shunning her.
But her win in NY after saying things likse was sort of stunning, so she's not completely unremarkable.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the insurgent firebrand who Tuesday toppled the No. 4 Democrat in the House of Representatives, is a strong critic of Israel who denounced the killings of Palestinian protesters as a “massacre.”

June 26, 2018 By Dave Goldiner
    This is a massacre.
I hope my peers have the moral courage to call it such.
No state or entity is absolved of mass shootings of protesters. There is no justification. Palestinian people deserve basic human dignity, as anyone else.

    Democrats can’t be silent about this anymore. https://t.co/wJGATOtDsR— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) May 14, 2018

Ocasio-Cortez, 28, stunned the political world by decisively beating Joe Crowley, a Queens powerbroker who had been mentioned as a possible future candidate for Speaker of the House.
With about 90% of precincts reporting, Ocasio-Cortez was ahead by 58%-to-42%, making Crowley the first incumbent Democrat to lose his seat this year.

Especially in New York people say this is political suicide,” Ocasio-Cortez told Glenn Greenwald of the Intercept, referring to her criticism of Israel. “But I had a lot of my constituents thanking me for taking that position. I had a lot of Jewish Americans who thanked me.”

yeah there are clear risk differences between the individual market and the group markets. That's insurance. Is she just learning this herself and helping other poorly educated learn this too?

Does this mean waitresses in their 20s-30s have more pre-existing conditions than aging Cogress members or risk comes from some other factors?
Thought Obamacare made rates more socialistic for everybody including those with pre-existing risks, perhaps with exception of privilieged Congress.
