    US Life Expectancy Falls Further

    https://news.slashdot.org/story/18/1...-falls-further

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Thursday released data that shows life expectancy fell by one-tenth of a year, to 78.6 years (Warning: source paywalled; alternative source), pushed down by the sharpest annual increase in suicide in nearly a decade and a continued rise in deaths from opioid drugs. "Influenza, pneumonia and diabetes also factored into last year's increase," The Wall Street Journal adds. From the report:

Economists and public-health experts consider life expectancy to be an important measure of a nation's prosperity. The 2017 data paint a dark picture of health and well-being in the U.S., reflecting the effects of addiction and despair, particularly among young and middle-aged adults, as well as diseases plaguing an aging population and people with lower access to health care. The U.S. has lost three-tenths of a year in life expectancy since 2014, a stunning reversal for a developed nation, and lags far behind other wealthy nations. Life expectancy is 84.1 years in Japan and 83.7 years in Switzerland, first and second in the most-recent ranking by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The U.S. ranks 29th.

White men and women fared the worst, along with black men, all of whom experienced increases in death rates. Death rates rose in particular for adults ages 25 to 44, and suicide rates are highest among people in the nation's most rural areas. On the other hand, deaths declined for black and Hispanic women, and remained the same for Hispanic men. As drug and suicide mortality has risen, deaths from heart disease, the nation's leading killer, went down only slightly, failing to offset the increases in mortality from other causes and prolonging another worrisome trend.

Take jobs away from people, and they lose their sense of self-worth.
    * Enforce Border Security – America should be guarding her own borders and enforcing her own laws instead of policing the world and implementing UN mandates.

    * No Amnesty - The Obama Administration’s endorsement of so-called “Comprehensive Immigration Reform,” granting amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, will only encourage more law-breaking.

    * Abolish the Welfare State – Taxpayers cannot continue to pay the high costs to sustain this powerful incentive for illegal immigration. As Milton Friedman famously said, you can’t have open borders and a welfare state.

    * End Birthright Citizenship – As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be granted U.S. citizenship, we’ll never be able to control our immigration problem.

The suicide rate was 14 deaths per 100,000 people. That's the highest since at least 1975.

—Montana had the highest suicide rate, and New York the lowest. Suicide rates were nearly twice as high in rural counties than in urban ones.

—The percentage of suicides due to drug overdose has been inching downward.

—Deaths from flu and pneumonia rose by about 6 percent. The 2017-2018 flu season was one of the worst in more than a decade, and some of the deaths from early in that season appeared in the new death dates.

—West Virginia was once again the state with the highest rate of drug overdose deaths. The CDC did not release state rates for suicides.

—Death rates for heroin, methadone and prescription opioid painkillers were flat. But deaths from the powerful painkiller fentanyl and its close opioid cousins continued to soar in 2017.

—Gun deaths rose for a third year in a row, to nearly 40,000. That's about 1,000 more than in 2016. They had been hovering around 33,500 deaths until a few years ago.

Like in other years, most gun deaths were suicides. Earlier CDC reports have noted increasing rates of suicide by gun. In 2017, it about 60 percent of them were by gun.

    Very well put.

The type and quality of job is also very important. In days of old, if you went to a shoe store, the person you would have spoken to back then knew everything there was to know about shoes. Not just sales and prices, but in creating those shoes right then and there. It was a family owned career that was fulfilling in its own right. Today, the majority of jobs do not pay well enough to even afford a Middle Class lifestyle. (source link) The hidden tax of Inflation is partly to blame, as is Corporations treating every person as if they are Disposable. Working at jobs where a person is treated like crap and does not provide any sense of self worth contributes to the high suicide rate and drug use.

Imagine you have a chart of your future. You see one line showing how much you will make each year over the course of your life. Now, imagine a second line that represents Cost of Living. The Cost Line starts off below what you currently earn, then hockeysticks and curves up crossing your Earning Line. At the point of intersection is where life ends. Maybe not right at that moment, but its the point at which a person is no longer self sufficient. They might survive by getting govt handouts, or leaning on family members. Not everyone has that opportunity to get either help or "just earn more". Many Millennials already know their futures are in ruin. They arent starting off with their Earning Line above the Cost of Living line, but rather below it.

According to a statistic new and shocking to me, is that Reno has 20,000 Homeless Teens. Many of them are gay and became homeless because they were kicked out by their family. Not that gay is the only influencing factor here, but that is also a low point where desperate people may start using drugs to begin with. Another statistic is that a single person would need to make a minimum of $22 dollars per hour to be able to afford one of our cheapest one bedroom apartments here. Most people have been tricked into blaming them for their own situations, even though everyone has been victimized by Inflation. That takes a huge toll on a persons psyche and mental well being also.

That certainly sounds like the sort of paper you'd quote.

    Life Expectancy? lol

Death expectancy would be accurate,, and I'm 30 years overdue.

and that is beginning to concern me.
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

    And this is surprising why?

Your wife, your kids, your friends, your co-workers, your neighbors, your entertainers, your politicians, your teachers...everyone around you in other words, all regard you as a bumbling fool at best, an evil oppressor at worst, it's not surprising that the more weak minded decide to swallow a gun barrel or a handful of pills.
