Twitter Officially Bans ‘Misgendering’ in Terms of Service

After banning journalist Laura Loomer this week for making completely factual statements about an elected U.S. government official, Twitter has reaffirmed its commitment to freedom of expression by reportedly banning the “misgendering” of transgendered people.
“We prohibit targeting individuals with repeated slurs, tropes or other content that intends to dehumanize, degrade or reinforce negative or harmful stereotypes about a protected category, the updated terms of service say. “This includes targeted misgendering or deadnaming of transgender individuals.”
“Deadnaming” is apparently the practice of referring to a trans person by their given name, instead of the name they have chosen during their transition.
“These offensive techniques—which involve using the wrong gender to refer to a trans person or a trans person’s old name—are often used on Twitter to insult and erase trans people’s identities and right to exist,” said PinkNews.


The punishment for misgendering can include permanent suspension if the rule is broken too many times. How many is too many? That is left undefined, meaning that it will be completely subjectively assessed by Silicon Valley giant. Twitter’s terms of service now also explicitly ban “engaging primarily in abusive behavior,” which, of course, is also completely subjective in nature.

Chaos? Only if they try to apply this new policy in some half-assed "objective" way. But why would they do that?
