Thread: Why Are Young People Having So Little Sex?

Exclamation Why Are Young People Having So Little Sex?

I can think of a number of reasons:

1 - Poisons in the food, air and water, that are emasculating men. Plunging sperm counts and testosterone levels are medically quantified.

2 - Fourth wave feminism that has rendered many women utterly loathsome and undesirable.

3 - Cultural conditioning combined with reason #1, that has rendered many men, weak, effeminate and equally undesirable.

4 - The rise of porn of every sort.

5 - The rise of social media. Why be content to have a dopamine hit of one person telling you that you are great when you can have thousands telling you that every day?

Why Are Young People Having So Little Sex?

    https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine...ession/573949/

Despite the easing of taboos and the rise of hookup apps, Americans are in the midst of a sex recession.

These should be boom times for sex.

The share of Americans who say sex between unmarried adults is “not wrong at all” is at an all-time high. New cases of HIV are at an all-time low. Most women can—at last—get birth control for free, and the morning-after pill without a prescription.

If hookups are your thing, Grindr and Tinder offer the prospect of casual sex within the hour. The phrase If something exists, there is porn of it used to be a clever internet meme; now it’s a truism. BDSM plays at the local multiplex—but why bother going? Sex is portrayed, often graphically and sometimes gorgeously, on prime-time cable. Sexting is, statistically speaking, normal.

Polyamory is a household word. Shame-laden terms like perversion have given way to cheerful-sounding ones like kink. Anal sex has gone from final taboo to “fifth base”—Teen Vogue (yes, Teen Vogue) even ran a guide to it. With the exception of perhaps incest and bestiality—and of course nonconsensual sex more generally—our culture has never been more tolerant of sex in just about every permutation.

But despite all this, American teenagers and young adults are having less sex.

To the relief of many parents, educators, and clergy members who care about the health and well-being of young people, teens are launching their sex lives later. From 1991 to 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey finds, the percentage of high-school students who’d had intercourse dropped from 54 to 40 percent. In other words, in the space of a generation, sex has gone from something most high-school students have experienced to something most haven’t. (And no, they aren’t having oral sex instead—that rate hasn’t changed much.)

Meanwhile, the U.S. teen pregnancy rate has plummeted to a third of its modern high. When this decline started, in the 1990s, it was widely and rightly embraced. But now some observers are beginning to wonder whether an unambiguously good thing might have roots in less salubrious developments. Signs are gathering that the delay in teen sex may have been the first indication of a broader withdrawal from physical intimacy that extends well into adulthood.

Over the past few years, Jean M. Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University, has published research exploring how and why Americans’ sex lives may be ebbing. In a series of journal articles and in her latest book, iGen, she notes that today’s young adults are on track to have fewer sex partners than members of the two preceding generations. People now in their early 20s are two and a half times as likely to be abstinent as Gen Xers were at that age; 15 percent report having had no sex since they reached adulthood.

Gen Xers and Baby Boomers may also be having less sex today than previous generations did at the same age. From the late 1990s to 2014, Twenge found, drawing on data from the General Social Survey, the average adult went from having sex 62 times a year to 54 times. A given person might not notice this decrease, but nationally, it adds up to a lot of missing sex. Twenge recently took a look at the latest General Social Survey data, from 2016, and told me that in the two years following her study, sexual frequency fell even further.

Some social scientists take issue with aspects of Twenge’s analysis; others say that her data source, although highly regarded, is not ideally suited to sex research. And yet none of the many experts I interviewed for this piece seriously challenged the idea that the average young adult circa 2018 is having less sex than his or her counterparts of decades past. Nor did anyone doubt that this reality is out of step with public perception—most of us still think that other people are having a lot more sex than they actually are.

When I called the anthropologist Helen Fisher, who studies love and sex and co-directs Match.com’s annual Singles in America survey of more than 5,000 unpartnered Americans, I could almost feel her nodding over the phone. “The data is that people are having less sex,” she said, with a hint of mischief. “I’m a Baby Boomer, and apparently in my day we were having a lot more sex than they are today!” She went on to explain that the survey has been probing the intimate details of people’s lives for eight years now. “Every year the whole Match company is rather staggered at how little sex Americans are having—including the Millennials.”

Fisher, like many other experts, attributes the sex decline to a decline in couplehood among young people. For a quarter century, fewer people have been marrying, and those who do have been marrying later. At first, many observers figured that the decline in marriage was explained by an increase in unmarried cohabitation—yet the share of people living together hasn’t risen enough to offset the decline in marriage: About 60 percent of adults under age 35 now live without a spouse or a partner. One in three adults in this age range live with their parents, making that the most common living arrangement for the cohort. People who live with a romantic partner tend to have sex more than those who don’t—and living with your parents is obviously bad for your sex life. But this doesn’t explain why young people are partnering up less to begin with.

Government. More specifically, laws that leave men liable for a lifetime of child support for one hookup--even if a paternity test proves the child isn't his.

Kids are scared to death of sex. And rightly so.

I'd say that falls under item two, but a valid point.

I suspect a lot of youngsters are too busy working to pay back their student loans. And many have to take a couple part time jobs and/or gigs that pay peanuts instead of a full time because many parts of the productive economy are still hollowed out.

The kleptocracy has stolen so much wealth that many people have realized that they can't afford to have children and may never be able to afford them.

I'm not talking about welfare trash, I'm talking about people who don't want to raise their children at the low living standard that welfare would provide.

Recently a 21 year old guy told me that he just isn’t “looking”. We were kind of giving him a hard time and asked if was an “incel”.

But judging by how young men spend their time, it certainly looks like (online) gaming takes up most of their time, and no doubt porn takes care of their hormonal needs.

Young women, on the other hand seem to be obsessed about celebrities and social networking. And if any male so much as looks at them, he is a “creep”, and they spend all of their time talking about how creepy guys are.

That probably accounts for quite a bit of the trend. Bottom line: it’s because of the internet.

I was asking myself that till I was 30.
Liberty is lost through complacency and a subservient mindset. When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. America was born of protest, revolution, and mistrust of government. Subservient societies neither maintain nor deserve freedom for long.

Ha. I can think of a few reasons, not having hit 30 yet.

Smartphones and social media have really changed social interactions. You get social interaction from your never-ending social feed, not random conversations with strangers. You want to just strike up conversation with a random stranger in a line, or somewhere? Completely abnormal. You're now a weirdo, who must be trying to sexually assault or rob them (despite us being safer than ever ... but the MSM keeps fear at a fever pitch 24/7).

Plus the internet which is everybody's rant space (plus everybody competing to have the interesting story that everyone can "smash like" on), so any time any guy tries to talk to you (a female), make sure to post how weird and creepy and dumb his conversation was - you know, for the laughs and validation of all the struggles you go through. That's toxic, be a guy - read enough of how creepy it is for chicks to have to talk to you, and you probably won't be doing that.

Tinder is the worst app ever known to man. I should just bite the bullet and make a profile as a chick to see what it's really like to be a chick on there. But - as a guy who was actually blessed with good genes, but is short, and doesn't have pictures of how he's been to 6 continents (??? - Northern Virginia), I guess that doesn't cut it. The app is unusable. You get 50 swipes a day, and you'll probably go through swiping on 350 people (7 days) before you get a match. And this isn't for a supermodel. To retain your sanity, you don't even get to read the chicks profile, you're just rapid fire swiping to get through those 5 minutes, so that you only waste 35 minutes a week, rather than 70, or 100.

The internet communication really hasn't helped much at all. Because apparently, while guys are getting a 0.2% match rate, apparently chicks are getting 75% plus (which probably makes sense ... because the guy's horribly low match rate certainly causes them to like more, in my case). So, they're matching with guys that DGAF (don't give a $#@!) about them, but of course guys have to send the first message, so that's probably why chicks get trolled and get $#@!ty messages ("because $#@! 'em, ya know?).
-But anyways, that raises a valid problem. Because now all these chicks have this huge pool of guys to choose from (giving the impression that they're valuable), and they have to choose, among these endless options. And they're terrible choosers. Because they've been raised in the "you can do anything age", and that it's women's time to lead the world, because they finally have the opportunity they've never had. And because they're so great, guys should just bend and break for them. But he still needs to be successful, and still be attractive (masculine), because he's a guy, ya know? It doesn't work like that. Guys are successful when they value themselves, and put themselves first, not sacrifice their opportunity for someone else or their bottom line. So, you can call the marketplace all kinds of distorted.

And yep. Porn is everywhere, 6.6 million videos on PornHub; I wonder how many lifetimes that is (...if only it worked like that). Yeah, it makes plenty of sense that teens are having less sex, it's not really a social taboo anymore (-where's the thrill?), and you can blow your load to literally whatever you want on the internet -- it's really too convenient not to, long term consequences be damned.

And yeah -- why go to any of this trouble when you can just get into video games. Pick any fantasy you want - Red Dead Redemption 2, relive life in the wild west, rob trains, build up your family clan, whatever other crazy stuff goes on. In real life I can't even change my car's oil in peace, gotta worry about some middle aged soy boy coming out saying the public street isn't a mechanic garage. Amazing.

Yeah, I’ve had to listen to it many times. Pretty much the standard reoccurring conversation among a family member and her friends.

    I smashed my rep button.

There's a lot of truth in this post. Since I've gone back to work I hear young women talking about men all the time and it's ridiculous. They also suck at flirting. Young men aren't very good at it, either. If I want some banter, I stick with flirting with older men.
