Netanyahoo's Likely Fall Destroys Trump's Middle East Strategy
The political upheaval in Israel is a problem for the White House and its Middle East plans.
Today Israel's defense minister Avigor Lieberman resigned and called for new elections. He disagreed with prime minister Netanyahoo over the renewed ceasefire in Gaza.
Netanyahoo had worked towards the earlier ceasefire to split Gaza under Hamas from the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank under Mahmoud Abbas. …
This splitting up of the Palestinians is an intended part of the Jared Kushner 'peace' plan for the Middle East. The Palestinians shall no longer be recognized as a people but must be splintered into small local groups without a common identity who can then be more easily suppressed.
Lieberman seems to disagree with this plan. He wants to wage war against Hamas and defeat it. Any such attempt would of course reunite the Palestinians. …
[Netanyahu] wanted to avoid an early election. His Likud party just lost seats in local elections … with only a two seat majority and an unstable coalition Netanyahoo will have trouble to hold on.
Naftali Bennett, the leader of the rightwing religious Jewish Home party, demands to be made defense minister. Netanyahoo does not want to give Bennet such a high profile job. But Bennett threatens to resign and to bring the Netanyahoo's coalition down if he does not get his will. …
Elections will likely be held in March. … Netanyahoo's Likud party holds 30 of 120 seats but could easily lose some in a new election. With a smaller base Netanyahoo would have difficulties to build a new coalition and to again become prime minster.
Jared Kushner, the son in law of president Trump, has his 'deal of the century' Middle East plan build on his very personal relation with Netanyahoo and Mohammad bin Salman of Saudi Arabia. If Netanyahoo is no longer prime minister that plan is even more dead than it already seems to be. The Trump administration has no alternative policy and Kushner is not the one to develop and pursue it.
The common patron and biggest donor of Trump and of Netanyahoo is the casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson. Can he buy Netanyahoo a new premiership? If he can't, and Trump's Israel policy is thereby dead …
As for Lieberman. He is a brash and thuggish man with little political foresight. In 2016 he boosted that he would kill Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of Hamas in Gaza, should he become defense minister. Six weeks later he became defense minister.

Israeli Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon and Interior Minister Aryeh Deri have called for the country to hold early elections in the wake of Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman's resignation, The Times of Israel reported Nov. 15.

Jewish Home Party leader Naftali Bennett has dropped his demand to become Israeli defense minister after incumbent Avigdor Lieberman's abrupt resignation, The Times of Israel reported Nov. 19. Jewish Home Party officials had said they would abandon the governing coalition if Bennett was not given the post.
Bennett's announcement will likely keep Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's governing coalition intact for now, although his coalition only retains a narrow majority, meaning the withdrawal of a single party would trigger snap elections.

A senior Israeli minister warned Wednesday that "time is limited" for Hamas's leader in the Gaza Strip, days after a controversial truce ended a severe flare-up and triggered a coalition crisis."Yahya Sinwar's time is limited," said Housing Minister Yoav Gallant, a former general who once oversaw operations in the Gaza Strip.
"He won't finish his life in a retirement home."
Speaking at a conference organised by the Jerusalem Post newspaper, Gallant said Hamas's leaders must "recalculate their route" and decide whether to fight Israel or retain the relative quiet of recent days.
Speaking at the same conference, Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said it was time for Israel to "move from defence to offence" in its battle with Hamas by "going back to targeted killings of the terrorist leaders of Hamas's military wing."
Erdan also said Israel should be "willing to capture and hold the Gaza Strip until we dismantle the terrorist infrastructure."
"Today we are closer than ever to doing this," he said.

The Israeli army said Monday it had carried out further air raids against Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip in response to a rocket being fired over its border.The Israeli air defence system intercepted the rocket which was fired overnight from the Hamas-ruled coastal enclave, the army said.
Planes and a helicopter gunship then raided "terror targets within the organisation's military camp in the northern Gaza Strip," the statement said.
A Hamas security official in Gaza said that Israeli aircraft carried out three raids, targeting a position of the armed wing of the movement near Beit Lahia in the north of the Palestinian enclave without causing any casualties.
The latest raids follow strikes by the Israeli army on two Hamas posts on Sunday, after balloons carried an explosive device over the border fence.

Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip fired a rocket at Israel late Saturday, Israel's army said, prompting retaliatory strikes on the territory's Islamist rulers Hamas as tensions rose after another day of violent border clashes."Earlier tonight, a rocket was launched from Gaza towards Israeli territory. In response, IDF fighter jets targeted two of Hamas' underground structures in the Gaza Strip," Israel Defense Forces tweeted.
"We will continue operating to defend Israeli civilians," it added.
Two targets in Gaza City were hit by the Israeli strikes and no one was harmed, security sources in Gaza said.

Israeli air strikes hit sites across the Gaza Strip on Monday in retaliation for a rare long-distance rocket attack that struck a house near Tel Aviv, but Hamas said later a ceasefire was reached.Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the Gaza Strip, said Egypt had brokered the ceasefire following the escalation that came just two weeks before Israel's April 9 elections.
Israel, whose strikes began around the same time Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met US President Donald Trump in Washington, has not commented on the claim.
"Egyptian efforts succeeded with a ceasefire between the occupation and the resistance factions," Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum said.
Further exchanges of fire occurred after the ceasefire announcement, but calm seemed to return by around midnight (2200 GMT).
