Who has worked in a post office? Can stamps not be cancelled, as the pipe bombs?

This site will summarize it's findings in a later post, if you post at it. http://trumpforums.com/index.php?topic=12.0

Stamps are cancelled for a single very good reason. So people can't cut out pristine stamps, take a little glue, and use them over and over again. Every time the USPS does not cancel a stamp, it gives up money. This, at an agency which cries poverty and posts losses every year, in the billions, despite billions in subsidies.

Right after it was noticed in the pipe bomb scare that the stamps on the packages were not cancelled, the media immediately pounced on "conspiracy theorists" who noticed this and cited it as further evidence that the bombs were conveniently timed to make Trump supporters look like violent lunatics. Now we learned that not all stamps are cancelled, and, according to Snopes, that could mean 80% of all stamps. Snopes found a stamp collector who said:

    Quote

There are estimates of up to 80 percent of packages delivered through the mail are delivered without cancellations.

Snopes then quoted unnamed sources in an NBC report to explain to the Little People why stamps would not be cancelled:

    Quote

some packages were not postmarked because the soft packaging could not go through the postal machines.

Yet the postal experts admitted that when a package would not fit through an machine, which would be an awful lot of packages and the most profitable because they need the most postage, it was the job of the handler to scratch a line through the stamps by hand with a black magic marker.

The mainstream media article started suggesting that maybe some of the packages were delivered by courier. But if delivered by courier, why would they need stamps?

The media used words like "filth" and "despicable" toward Trump supporters speculating that all was not exactly as the government's story said, a lone nut with brand new Trump stickers all over his van did it.

So what gives, people who work or have worked at a Post Office? Doesn't anyone spot check if workers are drawing a line through the stamps, and could this be why the Post Office is perpetually, forever broke and asking for a hand-out? Or is this "debunk" bunk?

I have a relative who works at the Post Office and I have never heard of stamps not being cancelled, I will ask about it in case it is something new but I doubt it.

The answer is that it happens very rarely if somebody doesn't do their job.

Any package weighing more than 13 ounces with stamps must be given to a retail clerk who will cancel the stamps.

If it is caught anywhere in the system with uncancelled stamps it will have them cancelled with a marker and it is unlikely to be missed outside of the Christmas rush.

I deliver for the USPS and I rarely ever encounter a package that doesn't have the stamps canceled. I get letters coming through quite a bit where I need to hand cancel the stamps, but never packages. I've been doing this for over 20 years and I could probably count on both my hands the number of packages without the stamps canceled. It seems really odd to me that all of them arrived at their destination without the stamps canceled.

It sounds like they didn't go through the postal system.

It seems somebody is trying to defame our brave men and women working every day in the post office to make sure you get your letters, packages and ballots. Is there any statement from USPS about this?

I'm not sure about an official statement but we've had a few talks about it. Everyday before we start our routes, our Postmaster will bring all the carriers together to discuss some Postal issue, usually it's safety related. "Watch out for dogs... kids are out for summer so don't run over any... etc." Since the pipe bombs, we've had a few talks that address what to do if we came across a suspicious package. Even the morning of the initial pipe bombs being found, the Postmaster stated they didn't go through our system but "be on the lookout for anything suspicious."

A stamp collector forum notes this is fairly common for packages not to have their stamps cancelled. https://www.stampcommunity.org/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=56828

    https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/l...l/65-608169529

Scott English, Executive Director from the American Philatelic Society sent WUSA9 News researchers the following statement, "Many have observed that the delivered packages have stamps but no cancellations, meaning they did not go through the U.S. Postal Service. This is not accurate because many packages are delivered with uncancelled postage.

There are estimates of up to 80 percent of packages delivered through the mail are delivered without cancellations. Most mail is machine-canceled but many packages must be hand-canceled. Those cancellations are either traditional date stamp or a magic marker line drawn over the stamps. There is no uniform standard at local post offices so cancelling postage on package is typically skipped because of workload issues."

So we verified false, the theory that the delivered bomb packages that are stamped but have no cancellations means did not go through the postal service is not true.

    Thanks but no thanks.
I'll trust the postal employees on this one.

Anecdotal evidence from a handful of people on a stamp collectors forum is worth about as much as the anecdotal evidence in this thread. Lol, stamp collectors forum. Get out of here with this garbage.

Are 80% of packages delivered through the mail delivered without cancellations because:

    A) The postage is pre-paid as part of a bulk delivery service

    B) There is a pre-paid sticker label

And these represent 80% of the mail delivered?

What about our resident postal service employee? Does his opinion carry more weight than a stamp collector forum?
