and this has put Washington in a “complex” situation with regards to Riyadh’s explanation about dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s death.
“They [Saudis] have been a great ally in the Middle East. We need them as a counter-balance to Iran.
So it's not the simplest solution. It's not the simplest situation to be in,” Trump said Friday.

U.S. President Donald Trump joined European leaders on Saturday in pushing Saudi Arabia for more answers about Jamal Khashoggi after Riyadh changed its story and acknowledged that the journalist died over two weeks ago at its consulate in Istanbul.Saudi Arabia said early on Saturday that Khashoggi, a critic of the country's de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, had died in a fight inside the building.
Germany called that explanation "inadequate" and questioned whether countries should sell arms to Saudi Arabia, while France and the European Union urged an in-depth investigation to find out what happened to the Washington Post columnist after he entered the consulate on Oct. 2 for documents for his marriage.
Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi, a Saudi national and U.S. resident, was killed inside the consulate by a team of Saudi agents and his body cut up.
The Khashoggi case has caused an international outrage and frayed political and business ties between Western powers and U.S. ally Saudi Arabia, the world's No.1 oil exporter.
Asked during a trip to Nevada if he was satisfied that Saudi officials had been fired over Khashoggi's death, Trump said: "No, I am not satisfied until we find the answer. But it was a big first step, it was a good first step. But I want to get to the answer."

US President Donald Trump accused Saudi Arabia of lying about the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, his strongest comments to date on the affair, as pressure built Sunday on the administration to identify and punish those responsible. In an interview with The Washington Post published late Saturday, Trump stepped back from his stance that the Saudis had earlier provided a credible explanation for the death of the journalist inside their Istanbul consulate, but he said he remained confident in the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
"Obviously there's been deception and there's been lies," he said of the shifting accounts offered by Riyadh.
Saudi officials originally said Khashoggi, who entered the diplomatic mission on October 2, had left unharmed, before announcing Friday that he was killed inside the building in what they described as an altercation.
"Their stories are all over the place," added Trump.

Less than a month after Germany authorized a shipment of arms to Saudi Arabia and several of its allies, in violation of an arms-sales ban approved by lawmakers from the country's ruling coalition earlier this year, Germany has once again decided to "punish" the Saudis by putting future arms shipments on hold pending the results of an investigation into the death of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
In late September, Germany violated its promise not to supply Saudi Arabia with arms and instead approved a 416.4 million euros ($477 billion) shipment to Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Jordan. Though German economy minister Peter Altmair wrote a letter to parliament members explaining why Germany's government had approved the sales, the decision was still heavily criticized by the country's opposition, per Bloomberg.

In the letter, Altmair revealed that 48 warheads and 91 missiles for UAE warships had been approved, along with 385 anti-tank missiles for Jordan. Qatar was also cleared to receive an armored howitzer, 170 air-to-air missiles and seven air-defense missile systems, according to CNN.
However, the delivery of those arms has now been put on hold. Had they been delivered, they would have qualified Saudi Arabia as the second largest recipient of Germany arms in 2018 after Algeria.
The initial ban, passed in January, was approved by Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union, its sister party the Christian Social Union and the center-left Social Democrats. It aimed to end arms sales to countries involved in the ongoing conflict in Yemen, a bloody civil war that has led to thousands of deaths.
Now, it appears the ban is back on.
"As long as there’s a continuing investigation, as long as we don’t know what happened, I believe there is no basis for positive decisions on weapons exports to Saudi Arabia," Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said in an interview with broadcaster ARD.
In a joint statement, Merkel and Maas have demanded that the circumstances surrounding Khashoggi's killing "be cleared up" and those responsible "held accountable."
Meanwhile, the leader of one of Merkel's coalition partners, Social Democratic Party head Andrea Nahles, has demanded a "comprehensive review" of Germany's relationship with Saudi Arabia, according to an interview with Bild am Sonntag newspaper. Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is also a member of the Social Democratic Party.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir claimed on Sunday morning that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was unaware of a rogue operation in Turkey that ended in the death of Jamal Khashoggi.
“This was an operation that was a rogue operation,” al-Jubeir told Fox News host Brett Baier . “This was an operation where individuals ended up exceeding the authorities and responsibilities they had. They made a mistake when they killed Jamal Khashoggi.”
He also claimed that those responsible for the Washington Post columnist’s death “did this out of the scope of their authority.” In fact, none of those involved in Khashoggi’s death had close ties to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, al-Jubeir added.

In the latest bombshell report involving the Khashoggi murder, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly spoke on the phone with journalist Jamal Khashoggi moments before he was murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. Turkish pro-government daily Yeni Safak disclosed the new alleged details of the case in a report on Sunday, contradicting claims by Saudi authorities that Prince Mohammed played no part in Khashoggi's murder.
"Khashoggi was detained by the Saudi team inside the consulate building. Then Prince Mohammed contacted Khashoggi by phone and tried to convince him to return to Riyadh," the report said.
"Khashoggi refused Prince Mohammed's offer out of fear he would be arrested and killed if he returned. The assassination team then killed Khashoggi after the conversation ended," it added.
While the report is so far unconfirmed, the New Arab reports that so far Turkish pro-government media have been receiving a steady stream of leaks many of which turned out to be accurate, including pictures of the hit team as they entered Turkey and reports of audio recordings of the murder said to be in the possession of Turkish authorities.

Earlier on Sunday, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir acknowledged a cover-up attempt. The dramatic reversal, after Saudi officials had previously said the columnist left the building alive, has only complicated the issue for allies.
Saudi Arabia’s al-Jubeir told Fox News on Sunday that the journalist’s death was an “aberration.”
“There obviously was a tremendous mistake made and what compounded the mistake was the attempt to cover up,” he said, promising that “those responsible will be punished for it.”
More importantly, he said that Prince Mohammed had no knowledge of the events, although if the Turkish report is confirmed, it will be yet another major flaw with the official narrative.

Meanwhile, as Western firms and high-ranked officials scramble to avoid any Saudi involvement, Russia is more than happy to step in and fill the power vacuum void left by the US. As a result, Russian businesses are flocking to attend the investment forum in Saudi Arabia, as Western counterparts pull out.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has had considerable success boosting Moscow’s influence in the Middle East at U.S. expense, by standing by regimes that fall afoul of the West, including in Syria and Iran. Last week Putin signed a strategic and partnership agreement with Egypt’s President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, backed by $25 billion in loans to build nuclear reactors. Until El-Sisi came to power, Egypt had been closely allied to the U.S.

The website of the Saudi government’s upcoming Future Investment Initiative conference was hacked and defaced with images of the murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Several reporters tweeted screenshots of the site after its defacement, purporting to show Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman — the kingdom’s de facto ruler — brandishing a sword. A portion of text on the site was replaced with an accusation the kingdom of “barbaric and inhuman action,” referring not only to the death of Khashoggi but also the government’s involvement in the ongoing offensive in Yemen.

Names and phone numbers of several Saudi individuals were also uploaded to the site’s homepage, including government employees and senior staff in state-backed companies.
The site was pulled offline shortly after the defacement on Monday.
Nobody has yet publicly declared responsibility for the defacement. It comes days after the Saudi regime admitted that Khashoggi was “murdered” in its consulate in Istanbul, more than two weeks after The Washington Post columnist walked in to obtain marriage license papers.

The drumbeat of incriminating leaks from the Turkish investigation into the killing of Jamal Khashoggi has continued apace Monday afternoon. And in the latest salacious piece of evidence that appears to support the theory that Khashoggi's murder was a premeditated act ordered by a senior official in his government, if not the Crown Prince himself, a Turkish TV station has aired footage showing employees from the Saudi consulate in Istanbul burning documents on Oct. 3, the day after Khashoggi disappeared inside the consulate and was never seen again.
Per Middle East Eye, Turkish television channel A Haber released on Monday a video seemingly filmed by a small drone of consulate employees throwing documents into a fire outside of the consulate building.

Just days after Germany announced it was suspending arms sales to Saudi Arabia - just weeks after inking a $500 million weapons deal with Riyadh - while the outrage over Khashoggi's murder lingers, French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday was less enthused about following in the footsteps of his ideological icon, Angela Merkel, and refused to take questions about halting arms sales to Saudi Arabia despite Germany's calls on its European partners to follow its example and stop arms exports to the kingdom.
During a Tuesday visit to a naval defense show, journalists asked Macron whether France would follow Germany in halting weapons sales to Riyadh after it admitted to the death of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi in its consulate, to which the French president with the plunging approval rating was clearly triggered:
"This has nothing to do with what we're talking about. Nothing. So I won't answer that question. I'm sorry but as long as I'll be in office this is how it will be, whether people like it or not," he responded, visibly irritated according to Reuters.
"It's not because one leader says something that I must react to it every time. So I won't answer that," he added in a bout of insecurity, after a journalist asked a follow-up question.

President Trump on Tuesday called Saudi Arabia's public relations efforts following the alleged murder and dismemberment of journalist Jamal Khashoggi the "worst cover-up ever."

Speaking with reporters at the White House, Trump said "The coverup was the worst in the history of cover-ups."
Asked about Jamal Khashoggi's killing, Pres. Trump says, "They had a very bad original concept, it was carried out poorly, and the cover-up was one of the worst in the history of cover-ups." https://t.co/2Y0BTU8Snx pic.twitter.com/EQ4B8wnijr

Trump also expressed concern over a controversial speech by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who rejects the Saudi account that the killing was accidental - saying that the dissident journalist was instead murdered in an operation orchestrated at the highest levels.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, meanwhile, says that the US will revoke visas for the Saudi agents accused of killing Khashoggi.

BREAKING: Pompeo just announced the US is revoking visas for the Saudi agents accused of killing journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul.

This is the Trump admin’s first concrete step to punish Saudi Arabia for Khashoggi's death

I'm still waiting for the Turks to produce actual evidence of the murder.
I know the Saudis have admitted to it now but I half expect them to trot him out and say "April Fools", the longer the Turks take to produce the evidence they claim to have the more likely it becomes. (even though I admit it is still very unlikely)
