Should Webmasters Resist Google's Push For AMP Pages?

    https://tech.slashdot.org/story/18/0...-for-amp-pages

"Have you heard of Google AMP? That stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages, and it's a way of making webpages so that they load faster and display more efficiently on mobile devices. Oh, and it puts your website under Google's control."

That's Mac Observer co-founder Bryan Chaffin, linking to an "interesting reading" titled "Google AMP Can Go To Hell."

AMP allows Google to basically take over hosting the web as well. The Google AMP Cache will serve AMP pages instead of a website's own hosting environment, and also allow Google to perform their own optimisations to further enhance user experience. As a side benefit, it also allows Google full control over content monetisation. No more rogue ad networks, no more malicious ads, all monetisation approved and regulated by Google. If anything happens that falls outside of the AMP standard's restrictions, the page in question simply becomes AMP-invalid and is ejected from the AMP cache -- and subsequently from Google's results. At that point the page might as well not exist any more....

The easy thing to do is to simply obey. Do what Google says. Accept their proclamations and jump when they tell you to. Or you could fight back. You could tell them to stuff it, and find ways to undermine their dominance. Use a different search engine, and convince your friends and family to do the same. Write to your elected officials and ask them to investigate Google's monopoly. Stop using the Chrome browser. Ditch your Android phone. Turn off Google's tracking of your every move. And, for goodness sake, disable AMP on your website.

Don't feed the monster -- fight it.

Here's how web developer Macieg Ceeglowski put it in 2015. "Out of an abundance of love for the mobile web, Google has volunteered to run the infrastructure, especially the user tracking parts of it." But are these assessments too harsh? Leave your own thoughts in the comment.

Should webmasters resist Google's push for AMP pages?

Tech (all) companies have been doing this forever, they are constantly "improving" things, which always turns out to be more control over you, they prey on peoples shallow wants and needs.

The companies change, but the techniques do not.... SELF.

    Yep.

Here is the thing tho, Google has way too much control over the internet.

    - Webmaster: If you dont build your website according to Googles design requirements, youre ranking suffers, basically delisted
    - Analytics: Too many websites rely on Google Analytics, they ALL sold YOU to Googlag
    - Browsers: Too much data is sent back on you, Google Analytics is used as a backup, this is their Primary Tracking
    - Advertising: Googles anti competitive nature has resulted in a Monopoly. If you are competition, they delist you
    - Politics: Google goes out of their way to buy off politicians who are more than happy to sell you out
    - Surveillance: Googles relationship with Govts has allowed them profits by selling the tools of your control

This IS the Post Industrial Age. We now live in a nearly purely Digital Age, which is more of an advancement of industrialization, not replacing or eliminating it. Thing is tho, those who control the Data will control the world. Their measures of control are confusion and information filtering. Too many common folk dont have a clue what www.rpf.com means. To them its just tech nonsense. The only way to overcome this is to flat out teach them. Watch your URLS, explain what they are, overcome ignorance with teaching. Mom doesnt know the difference between www.wellsfargo.com/login and www.scamsite.com/wellsfargo/login. And that lack of understanding has created a loophole that Google is exploiting heavily and creating Data Dependency. Same way as most people are hopelessly dependent on Banks for anything money related. Google is a Data Bank.

Seriously, for anyone that reads this, if you bank online, do you type your banks URL up in the address bar line, or do you Google your banks website name and get to it that way?

I can tell you for a fact that this part is not true. I routinely get sites to the top of Google's rankings (as well as Bing and other engines) merely by adhering to the HTML specification and doing proper semantics.

The vast majority of websites out there violate the HTML spec, which in turn makes it harder for any search to understand the content and index it correctly.

For example, ronpaulforums.com is basically kicking itself in the balls SEO-wise with this. I could raise its search rankings across the board by fixing this kind of thing.

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=ht...Inline&group=0

Even those that get the spec correct get the semantics wrong more often than not, thanks to the proliferation of designers in the field at the expense of engineers. You'll see all sorts of stuff that looks bat$#@! insane from a technical point of view (misuse of H tags is a big and common one) far more often than you will see a site built correctly.

If anyone here is having an SEO problem with a website and wants it fixed, I have magic formula that is infinitely reproducible and works in almost every case, outside the very most competitive search spaces where additional measures are needed to get to the top.
