Ron DeSantis clarifies after taking heat for warning Florida voters not to 'monkey this up'

    Adam Shaw

Florida Rep. Ron DeSantis, the GOP nominee for governor, clarified comments he made earlier Wednesday in which he warned voters not to “monkey this up” by voting for his Democratic opponent, who is black.

“We've got to work hard to make sure that we continue Florida going in a good direction, let’s build off the success we’ve had with Governor [Rick] Scott,” DeSantis, fresh off his Republican primary victory, said on Fox News' "America’s Newsroom” earlier in the day.

“The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases and bankrupting the state.”

The remark drew instant fire from Democrats, who accused him of using “racist dog whistles,” considering the Democratic nominee Andrew Gillum is black.

“It's disgusting that Ron DeSantis is launching his general election campaign with racist dog whistles,” Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo said.

Gillum spokesman Geoff Burgan told The Tallahassee Democrat that the campaign was leaving it to the party to respond.

"DeSantis' comments speak for themselves," Burgan said.
On 'America's Newsroom,' Republican gubernatorial candidate says he is the guy who can lead Florida in the right direction. DeSantis looks ahead to the Republican Party's chances in the midterm elections.

TRUMP-ENDORSED RON DESANTIS TO FACE BERNIE-BACKED ANDREW GILLUM IN FLORIDA GOVERNOR'S RACE

But DeSantis’ office dismissed claims that his remarks had a racial dimension as “absurd.”

“Ron DeSantis was obviously talking about Florida not making the wrong decision to embrace the socialist policies that Andrew Gillum espouses,” spokesman Stephen Lawson said in a statement. “To characterize it as anything else is absurd.”

“Florida’s economy has been on the move for the last eight years and the last thing we need is a far-left Democrat trying to stop our success,” the statement said.

Gillum, a Bernie Sanders-backed Tallahassee mayor, pulled off a major upset in defeating a half a dozen rivals, including former Rep. Gwen Graham, in Tuesday's Democratic primary.

DeSantis and Gillum will face each other in November's general election. If he triumphs, Gillum would be the state's first black governor.

"I'm truly honored to represent people across the state as the Democratic nominee -- and I promise to stand up for everyday Floridians and the issues that matter most," Gillum tweeted after his win.

Anyone who thinks this is racist in the media should be fired immediately. There is no way any reasonable person thinks DeSantis was saying this as some grand strategy to appeal to racist. It doesn't even make sense. This is the kind of stuff that makes me like Trump. The press is the enemy of the people.

He better fight these scum. The real racists are those that automatically think monkey = black

Then why are they voting Republican?

I don't think anyone is saying this is a "racist strategy." Rather they're saying that racists have a long history of justifying oppression and racism by saying they're monkies (which is true-http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc...=rep1&type=pdf] ) and that this reveals his true racist nature.

Now, whether he is racist or stupid is up for debate. Either way doesn't make him look good.

That is the lie they keep selling. But reality doesn't bear out the propaganda. Especially with DeSantis. The man is a Socialist through and through.

I am confused. So is he racist or not? I don't know what am I supposed to think.

Of course that is what they are saying. That is the exact criticism. That is what every Democrat pundit is saying. Literally that criticism.

There is nothing wrong with what he said. I know nothing about the guy, but now I semi-like him if for no other reason because he is capable of speaking like a normal person who doesn't worry if every single thing might be perceived by degenerates as racist.

Dumb move. Obviously not a racial remark in context, but if he apologizes he's done.

I agree. My theory is that the net effect of the non stop, silly, over the top hated of republicans/conservatives is to add republican voters. I was tempted a few times to vote Trump just as a protest.

True but most people are either going to vote republican or democrat and clearly the republicans are the lesser of two evils. There's a reason the Pauls run as republicans.

That being said I quit voting republican about 20 years ago. Now I only vote libertarian and leave the rest blank.

It's not a lie, some Republicans are for small government and all Democrats are for big government. That is an undeniable truth.

What is unknown is the ratio of Republicans for small government vs. big government, and even more complicated is what threshold do we use for big govt. vs. small govt. Republican.

Whenever I read $#@! like this, I automatically know the person has no skin in the game. I will rather immodestly say I pay well into six figures in income tax every year. Yeah. There is a difference. There is a difference between a Bernie Sanders socialist and a guy with a 94% rating from Club for Growth. It isn't a theoretical difference. It is very concrete. Equating a pretty good Republican to a guy endorsed by Bernie Sanders is absurd.

That's just a common colloquialism. That was neither stupid or racist of him. Anyone who says it was either is either a brainwashed SJW or stupid. Neither one is good.

I am sick of this $#@!. Racism isn't cool, but trying to ruin someone's carreer over a false allegation is just as bad. This has to stop. This affects all of us. I will lose respect for him if he apologizes.

And in favor of communism, he puts up a good cover but if you pay attention he only attacks the less communist option and always pushes for the course of action that will benefit the communists, his constant accusations of NAZIsm are also a dead giveaway.

Politicians should never apologize, if they said something that truly demands an apology then they should just drop out, if what they said isn't worth dropping out over then apologizing is just a sign of weakness, voters don't like weakness.
