    Harvard Medical Professor Calls Coconut Oil “Pure Poison”

    The fact that the medical system and the U.S. government diet police (USDA and FDA) are very upset that Americans are eating more coconut oil is very obvious.

    They are trying hard to sway public opinion, using the corporate-sponsored “mainstream” media.

    The corporate-sponsored “mainstream” media, funded in large part by the pharmaceutical industry, is promoting a lecture given in German by a Harvard medical professor who claims that coconut oil is “pure poison.”

    The lecture was given by Dr. Karin Michels, the director of the Institute for Prevention and Tumor Epidemiology at the University of Freiburg and a professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

    Now, before I expose the old same tired lies the medical system and its media proponents claim about coconut oil, and the reasons why they are doing so, just consider the logic of making such a statement as “coconut oil is pure poison.”

    While coconut oil has only become popular in the U.S. again in recent years, it is a traditional food that has been consumed in tropical climates where coconuts grow for many thousands of years.

    Is it reasonable to think that all these billions of people have been poisoning themselves due to their consumption of coconut oil for the past several thousand years?

    If it were truly a poison leading to heart disease and bad health, wouldn’t we be seeing an increase in many health problems among the millions of Americans who now use it as their primary dietary oil?

    Is there any evidence at all for any of Dr. Michels claims?

    No.

    The only reason her comments and lecture are going viral today, and being promoted by the corporate media, is because of her “credentials.” In the field of logic this is called a fallacy of “appeal to authority,” as we are just supposed to accept her word on it without any evidence.

    What Dr. Michels uses to explain her position is a failed theory of heart disease called the “lipid theory of heart disease” which condemns saturated fat as something terrible that is to be avoided at all costs.

    Using this theory, which has been thoroughly debunked by actual science, coconut oil then is condemned as guilty by association, since it has the highest amount of saturated fat than any other dietary oil.

    The real reason coconut oil is being attacked in the corporate media by the medical system, is because it is a threat to their toxic drugs. Because outside of the U.S., the peer reviewed literature is publishing more and more studies showing just how healthy coconut oil really is, and how it is being used in nutritional protocols to help cure many diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

    Last year (2017) the American Heart Association issued a “Presidential Advisory” on “Dietary Fats and Cardiovascular Disease” in which it condemned coconut oil, and recommended that people not consume it.

    Yeah I am not buying this junk science. I did a lot of research and observations on my own and I feel so much better when I use organic virgin Coconut Oil, organic Ghee and organic butter.

    Coconut Oil’s Bad Rap

    How did the food manufacturers manage to discredit an oil used by civilizations throughout history that didn’t experience the rate of disease that we in the United States currently face?

    Dr. Thomas Brenna of Cornell University explained the magic trick the food industry pulled on this amazing oil. “Most of the studies involving coconut oil were done with partially hydrogenated coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil, which has not been chemically treated, is a different thing in terms of a health risk perspective.”

    His research made it clear that natural, organic coconut oil was not the culprit. Once coconut oil is chemically altered to a hydrogenated state, it is no longer natural or organic. They are two very different products and have opposite effects on the human body.

    Dr. Brenna’s findings were supported by Dr. Ancel Keys.

    In the 1950s, Dr. Keys suspected a link between heart disease and hydrogenated oils. He began a series of studies to test his hypothesis. He investigated a Wisconsin dairy farmer whom initially had cholesterol levels that neared 1000, exceptionally higher than the United States “normal” range of 200-230.

    Dr. Keys put him on a diet that replaced margarine with coconut oil. His cholesterol level dropped to 300 in one week. He changed the man’s diet again, adding back the margarine that had been part of his daily food intake. Within days, his cholesterol went back up. On a side note, the topic of cholesterol and heart disease is a topic for another article altogether. Despite what you hear, the research actually indicates that cholesterol does not cause heart disease.

    This particular experiment raised public awareness and there were health concerns by consumers. The vegetable oil industry proceeded to divert the public’s attention by criticizing and attacking all tropical oils – particularly coconut oil. The soybean industry followed suit. Soon enough, the public quieted down and the manufacturers went back to “business as usual.”

    A group of researchers published a paper in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 1981 about their study of two groups of Polynesians. Both groups were instructed to consume coconut oil as their primary source of energy. The results showed positive circulatory and vascular functions in both populations. There was no indication that high saturated fat intake caused harm. The “French Paradox” – a study on low death rates related to coronary heart diseases despite increased intake of saturated fat – confirmed their findings.

    You may have heard recently that Harvard epidemiologist Karin Michels gave a lecture this summer on nutrition in Germany in which she called coconut oil “pure poison” and “one of the worst foods you can eat.” Those statements got a lot of attention, and now a high-ranking official in India is firing back.
    Coconut oil is widely used in India, and Michels’s comments are “unsubstantiated and inconsiderate,” wrote B.N. Srinivasa Murthy, India’s horticulture commissioner, in a letter to the dean of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health that was obtained by the Washington Post. Murthy also asked the dean to take “corrective measures” and retract the Michels comments, which made “negative statements against the revered crop of billions.”
    In an interview with the Post, Murthy said that Michels’s lecture also came up at a recent meeting of the Asia Pacific Coconut Community. “There was a little bit of anguish,” he said. “I wondered what had made her make this statement.”
    A publicist for the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health did not respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s request for comment.

    All oils have good and bad properties. None of them are inherently deadly or "miracles". They will neither kill you nor help you live forever. Though too much of any of them can be bad for you. Everything in moderation.

    Use as Carrier Oil

    Rich source of Fatty acids that provide many benefits
    According to the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, coconut oil contains 0 cholesterol and is a good source of energy, lipids, and various other nutrients. [23] It contains vitamins and minerals such as vitamin E, vitamin K, calcium, zinc, and iron.

    More than 90% of coconut oil consists of FFAs or free fatty acids, saturated fats (Don’t panic! It’s not as bad as it sounds, read until the end of this and your opinion may change), along with traces of a few unsaturated fatty acids, such as monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. [24] Virgin coconut oil is no different from this.

    Saturated fatty acids
    Most of them are medium chain triglycerides, which are supposed to assimilate well into the body’s systems.

    Lauric acid: It is the chief contributor, representing more than 40% of the total, followed by capric acid, caprylic acid, myristic acid, and palmitic acid. The human body converts lauric acid into monolaurin. Lauric acid is helpful in dealing with viruses and diseases.
    Capric acid: It reacts with certain enzymes secreted by other bacteria, which subsequently converts it into a powerful antimicrobial agent, monocaprin.
    Caprylic acid, caproic acid, and myristic acid: They are rich in antimicrobial and antifungal properties
    Stearic acid: This acid has cleansing and solidifying properties. No wonder it is used for skin care products.
    Unsaturated fatty acids
    The oil contains polyunsaturated fatty acids- linoleic acid, monounsaturated fatty acids- oleic acid

    Poly-phenols
    Coconut contains gallic acid, which is also known as phenolic acid. These polyphenols are responsible for the fragrance and the taste of coconut oil. Virgin coconut oil is rich in these polyphenols.

    Derivatives of fatty acid
    It also contains betaines, ethanolamide, ethoxylates, fatty esters, fatty polysorbates, monoglycerides, and polyol esters.

    Derivatives of fatty alcohols
    Apart from the above mentioned fatty acids it also contains fatty chlorides, fatty alcohol sulfate, and fatty alcohol ether sulfate.

    How to Use and Store?
    Unlike most other oils, coconut oil has a high melting point – about 24 to 25 degrees Celsius or 76-78 Fahrenheit. Therefore, it is solid at room temperature and melts only when the temperature rises considerably. It is often in this form and is not supposed to be kept it in the refrigerator.

    If you are using it for topical purposes, especially hair care, just melt the oil (if it is solid) by keeping the bottle in the sun or soaking it in warm water.
    You can also take some oil out and put it in a small bowl and warm it.Then, take the oil on your palm and apply it to your hair.
    You can use coconut oil for cooking your favorite recipes. It can easily replace butter or vegetable oil.
    Remember, you don’t need to completely switch to the oil because then you will lose other benefits from more traditional oils and dairy products.

    In colder countries, the oil comes in good, broad containers. However, if you get it in a pack (tetra-pack or plastic pouch), after opening the pack, be sure to keep the oil in containers with a tight lid and broad mouth. This will help you scoop it out with a spoon if it solidifies. Make sure you seal the container well to avoid any attention of insects or rodents!

    I don’t like the taste of coconut oil. What should I do?

    If you are keen on trying it then may be using it in a variety of recipes, and using it in baking may help. In case if you feel nauseated then don’t force yourself to eat it. Just in case you develop allergic reactions then it is better to avoid coconut oil completely.

    Is Coconut Oil “Poison”?
    In July 2018, a Harvard professor, Karin Michels, sparked a controversy when she labeled coconut oil as “pure poison”. [25] Michels, an epidemiologist at the Harvard TH Chan school of Public Health, said there was no scientific evidence which corroborated the health benefits of the oil and that the saturated fats in the oil were harmful to cardiovascular health. This caused an uproar in the scientific community with eminent cardiologists hitting back, saying coconut oil with its saturated fats is good for health in moderate amounts. Also, officials from the government of India and Philippines have stated publicly that her comments are wrong. [26] For now, you can safely have coconut oil in moderation, as is the advice on all foods.

    Cracking the coconut oil craze

    If you Google “coconut oil,” you’ll see a slew of stories touting the alleged health benefits of this solid white fat, which is easy to find in supermarkets these days. But how can something that’s chock-full of saturated fat — a known culprit in raising heart disease risk — be good for you?

    Coconut does have some unique qualities that enthusiasts cite to explain its alleged health benefits. But the evidence to support those claims is very thin, says Dr. Qi Sun, assistant professor in the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

    “If you want to lower your risk of heart disease, coconut oil is not a good choice,” he says. It’s true that coconut oil tends to raise beneficial HDL cholesterol more than other fats do, possibly because coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, a fatty acid that the body processes slightly differently than it does other saturated fats.

    Coconut oil’s effect on cholesterol

    But there’s no evidence that consuming coconut oil can lower the risk of heart disease, according to an article in the April 2016 Nutrition Reviews. The study, titled “Coconut Oil Consumption and Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Humans,” reviewed findings from 21 studies, most of which examined the effects of coconut oil or coconut products on cholesterol levels. Eight were clinical trials, in which volunteers consumed different types of fats, including coconut oil, butter, and unsaturated vegetable oils (such as olive, sunflower, safflower, and corn oil) for short periods of time. Compared with the unsaturated oils, coconut oil raised total, HDL, and LDL cholesterol levels, although not as much as butter did.

    These findings jibe with results from a study by Dr. Sun and colleagues in the Nov. 23, 2016, issue of The BMJ, which examined the links between different types of saturated fatty acids and heart disease. Compared with other saturated fats (like palmitic acid, which is abundant in butter), lauric acid didn’t appear to raise heart risk quite as much. But that’s likely because American diets typically don’t include very much lauric acid, so it’s harder to detect any effect, Dr. Sun notes.

    Tropical diets are different

    Coconut oil proponents point to studies of indigenous populations in parts of India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, and Polynesia, whose diets include copious amounts of coconut. But their traditional diets also include more fish, fruits, and vegetables than typical American diets, so this comparison isn’t valid, says Harvard Medical School professor Dr. Bruce Bistrian, who is chief of clinical nutrition at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

    Some of the coconut oil available in stores is labeled “virgin,” meaning that it’s made by pressing the liquid from coconut meat and then separating out the oil. It tastes and smells of coconut, unlike the refined, bleached, and deodorized coconut oil made from the dried coconut meat used in some processed foods and cosmetics. Virgin coconut oil contains small amounts of antioxidant compounds that may help curb inflammation, a harmful process thought to worsen heart disease. But to date, proof of any possible benefit is limited to small studies in rats and mice, says Dr. Bistrian.

    Unsaturated fats
    In contrast, there’s a wealth of data showing that diets rich in unsaturated fat, especially olive oil, may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, Dr. Sun points out. The evidence comes not only from many observational studies (like those in the aforementioned BMJ report) but also a landmark clinical trial from Spain, which found that people who ate a Mediterranean-style diet enhanced with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts had a lower risk of heart attack, stroke, and death from heart disease than people who followed a low-fat diet.

    Of course, there’s no need to completely avoid coconut oil if you like the flavor. Some bakers use coconut oil instead of butter in baked goods, and coconut milk is a key ingredient in Thai cooking and some Indian curry dishes. Just be sure to consider these foods occasional treats, not everyday fare.

    I agree with that. And, you know, the dose makes the poison. Same applies to any oil, whether its food grade or skin care product. From my experience a small amount of coconut oil helps to keep my scalp moisturized after using a flat iron, for example, I learned it from articles like this. I also know that one of my friends is allergic to coconut, you should also consider that.
