Brazil's Leftist Workers' Party Dominates Polls

The most dire warnings from analysts worry that Brazil may turn into the next Turkey if the left-wing Workers' Party (PT) takes power again... and the Real is tumbling back to cycle lows following the latest poll showing PT dominating with over 37% of the vote.
Even more crucially, market-friendly Geraldo Alckmin failed to show any gain with 4.9% of the votes, which wouldn’t be enough to take him to runoff

As Bloomberg details, all this pessimism reflects what’s really an intense distaste for the Workers’ Party, known locally as the PT, among investors and business executives.
They see the government of former President Dilma Rousseff as largely responsible for bringing about the worst recession in a century before she was impeached, and her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva as a crook. While the PT has put Lula forth as its candidate, it’s unlikely he will be allowed to run in October because of a corruption conviction. His probable replacement, former Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad, gets no more love from traders.
“Turkey and Argentina are examples of how disrupting it is for financial markets when investors lose confidence in policy direction and institutions,” said Tania Escobedo, a Latin America strategist at RBC Capital Markets in New York. “Lula’s PT party would represent this scenario, unless it moderates its views significantly.”
One specific concern is that a PT government might seek to unwind the efforts President Michel Temer made to shore up the budget after the country’s credit rating was cut to junk, including a push to overhaul the social security system.
The result is selling in the Real... (and weakness in Brazilian stocks)

The political confusion and chaos around the globe grows with each passing day, and one day after Australia suffered a leadership crisis which could result in the premature exit of prime minister Turnbull, attention turns again to Brazil, where former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva - who remains in prison on a corruption conviction, and is potentially barred from standing in October's presidential election - is enjoying a growing advantage against his opponents in the polls ahead of October's presidential election.
According to the latest poll by Datafolha released on on Wednesday, the former president's share of the vote has risen to 39% from 30% last month, as the local working class demand a return to a past when life seemed better (a frequent lament these days).

Lula's lead means he now has more than double the number of his nearest challenger, far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro, who is up to 19% from 17% last month with none of the other 11 registered candidates polling in the double figures in the sample of almost 8,433 people asked who they intended to vote for in the October 7 election.
Environmentalist Marina Silva took 8%. Business favorite center-right candidate Geraldo Alckmin remained stuck in single digits with 9%, up from 7% in June. The latest figures are in line with other polling organizations that gave Lula a 37% share earlier this week.
If Lula’s name is excluded, Bolsonaro leads with 22% and Marina Silva jumps to 16%.
The 72-year-old leader of the Workers' Party (PT) is aiming for a third term in the top job having led Brazil from 2003 to 2010. However, as discussed previously, Lula could be barred from running as he serves a 12-year sentence for corruption.

And while Brazil's Attorney General Raquel Dodge asked the country's top court for electoral matters to invalidate Lula's candidacy, the United Nations Human Rights Committee ruled that he cannot be disqualified "until his appeals before the courts have been completed in fair judicial proceedings." Brazil is obliged to abide by the committee's findings.
According to Reuters, the PT’s strategy is to keep Lula’s candidacy alive for as long as possible, then work to transfer his support to his running mate, former Sao Paulo mayor Fernando Haddad, who polled just 4% in the Datafolha survey.
The poll found that 31% of respondents said they would definitely vote for Lula’s handpicked successor if Lula is barred from running, while another 18% said that “perhaps” they would vote for a Lula-backed candidate.
In Brazil's presidential election system, the top two candidates from the first round head to a second round run-off, with Datafolha putting Lula ahead of Bolsonaro by 52% to 32% in that vote.
Needless to say, a Lula victory and the return of a socialist regime would be the worst outcome from a capital markets standpoint, with investors fearing the return of a state-led economy and with no attempt to continue the economic reforms that deeply unpopular President Michel Temer has partially pushed through Congress.

Traders who were bidding up the Brazilian real and local stocks on Friday on the expectation that Lula would be barred from running for president in Brazil's upcoming presidential elections proved to be right: late on Friday, Brazil’s top electoral court banned jailed former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from running in this year’s presidential because of his prior corruption conviction.

In the 6-1 ruling, the country’s top electoral court decided that Lula’s candidacy cannot stand, given his 12-year sentence for corruption and money-laundering by an appeals court earlier this year Bloomberg reported.
The ruling came after a dramatic and gruelling late-night session broadcast live on television and across news sites, and defied a request from the United Nations human rights committee that he be allowed to stand.
"I declare the candidate ineligible and I deny his application to run for the presidency," said Luis Roberto Barroso, the lead judge reading out a summary of the ruling at the court. "I veto electoral propaganda until the candidate’s name is replaced on the ballot."
“What is at stake here today is the equality of all citizens before the law and the Constitution,” Judge Og Fernandes told the court in his vote to declare Lula ineligible. Judge Admar Gonzaga, who as a lawyer worked for Lula’s handpicked successor Dilma Rousseff’s 2010 election, cast the decisive vote in the 6-1 decision that sealed the leftist icon’s ejection from the presidential election.
From behind bars, Lula, the hugely popular, two times former leftist president and union leader leads polling in Brazil’s most unpredictable and polarised presidential election in decades. The decision to bar his candidacy plays to the advantage of extreme rightwing candidate Jair Bolsonaro, running second in polls and ahead without Lula.

    That's a poor analogy...

I appreciate that it's meant to be about exchange rates, but Erdogan is the opposite of any kind of "workers' party."

And so it is rather misleading; Erdogan is the bulwark against communism in Turkey.

Brazil's far-right candidate for president Jair Bolsonaro was stabbed in the abdomen during a parade in the city Juiz de Fora Thursday. Bolsonaro’s son, Flavio tweeted that his father had been stabbed and suffered severe blood loss and arrived to the hospital "almost dead" but added that "his condition now seems stabilized. Please pray."
Numerous videos on social media showed Bolsonaro, who has promised to crack down on crime in Latin America's largest nation, being stabbed with a knife to the lower part of his stomach. At the moment of the attack, Bolsonaro was on the shoulders of a supporter, looking out at the crowd and giving a thumbs up with his left hand. According to Folha, Bolsonaro's liver - which was perforated by the stabbing - suffered a "grave injury."

After the attack, he is seen flinching and then goes out of view. Other videos show supporters carrying him to a car and hitting a man who was apparently the attacker. Brazilian media reported the "Brazilian Donald Trump" was undergoing urgent surgery at a local hospital.

Bolonsaro, who was caught by supporters as he fell, was quickly whisked away in an SUV, further video indicated. His son later said on Twitter that the wound was superficial and his father was doing fine.

A police spokesman confirmed that the alleged attacker – named as Adelio Bispo de Oliveira – was in custody after being badly beaten up by Bolsonaro supporters. The man was arrested in 2013 for another assault, police said.
Luis Boudens, president of the National Federation of Federal Police, told the AP that the assailant appeared to be deranged.
"Our agents there said the attacker was 'on a mission from God,'" Boudens said. "Their impression is that they were not dealing with a mentally stable person. He didn't expect to be arrested so quickly, agents reacted in seconds."
“The Minas Gerais police reacted rapidly. Uniformed officers who were there arrested the attacker,” said Major Flavio Santiago, a police spokesman.

Hospital director Eunice Dantas told reporters on Friday that Bolsonaro had lost about 40 percent of his blood, or more than two liters, resulting in his being in shock upon arrival after the knife penetrated 12cm (4.7in) into his abdomen. Doctors now report him to be "in excellent clinical condition" after emergency surgery.

Citing medical sources, Reuters reports of Bolsonaro's medical status after he suffered the deep wound to his lower stomach:
Congressman Bolsonaro, who has enraged many Brazilians for years with controversial comments but has a devout following among conservative voters, could take two months to fully recover and will spend at least a week in hospital, said Dr. Luiz Henrique Borsato, who operated on the candidate.
"His internal wounds were grave and put the patient's life at risk," Borsato said. The challenge now is preventing infection that could result from the perforation of Bolsonaro's intestines, he said.
He's since tweeted that he's doing well and recuperating; however, in a video message ot his supporters Bolsonario acknowledged he had been in "intolerable" pain and had "never hurt anyone".

According to the latest Ibope poll, Bolsonaro had 22% of first-round vote intentions, more than 10% points ahead of his closest rivals. Former Environment Minister Marina Silva and left-wing candidate Ciro Gomes each have 12 percent while former governor of Sao Paulo, Geraldo Alckmin, has 9%. Fernando Haddad, the likely substitute for Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has 6%, although it remains unclear how much of Lula's vote, which was in the 30% range, would transfer over to Haddad now that Lula has been barred from running for president.
Bolsonaro has relied heavily on social media and rallies across the country in a grass roots populist oriented campaign, thus his inability to take to the streets and give speeches could greatly impact the results.
President Temer, an unpopular leader, is not standing for re-election, and millions of voters remain undecided.
Mr Bolsonaro is expected to have a strong first round but lose a run-off to leftist Ciro Gomes, environmentalist Marina Silva or ex-Governor of Sao Paulo Geraldo Alckmin, according to leading research company Ibope. BBC
However, Flavio Bolsonaro, the candidate's son, made a surprise statement on Friday, saying "the attack was a political boost".
Indeed with Bolsonaro's story of surviving this vicious attack now spread across the globe, and with an outpouring of sympathy from Brazilians, many of which are still on the fence regarding the upcoming election in October, this could be the very thing that pushes him over the edge to victory.

Right-wing Brazil presidential election frontrunner Jair Bolsonaro consolidated his lead in an opinion poll published on Monday, with leftist challenger Fernando Haddad also building momentum.Bolsonaro has been in pole position since Brazil's top electoral court barred former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from running as he serves a 12-year prison sentence for accepting a bribe.
But Haddad, Lula's Workers' Party replacement candidate, has seen his popularity soar since he was officially named last week as the man to run for the leftist party in the October 7 election.
Bolsonaro, accused by his detractors of racism, sexism and homophobia, has 28.2 percent of the vote compared to 17.6 for Haddad, according to the poll conducted by MDA on behalf of the National Transport Federation.

The man leading Brazil's presidential election polls says he is worried that fraud could cost him victory in October, raising questions about whether he would accept defeat. Far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro made a Facebook live posting Sunday saying he sees a risk that fraud might give the election to Fernando Haddad, who has replaced jailed former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the left-leaning Workers Party ticket. Da Silva led in polls before being disqualified due to a corruption conviction.
"The great concern is not to lose the vote, it is to lose by fraud. That possibility of fraud in the runoff, maybe even in the first vote, is concrete," Bolsonaro said in his first address to supporters from a hospital where he is recovering from a Sept. 6 stabbing attack.

Brazil's far-right presidential frontrunner Jair Bolsonaro was released from intensive care Sunday after undergoing surgery for complications from a stab wound he suffered while campaigning. The candidate, who had surgery to remove an intestinal blockage on Wednesday, has been moved to a "semi-intensive care unit," doctors at Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein hospital said.

In its statement Sunday, the hospital said Bolsonaro was "on a good clinical path, with no fever," but that he continued to be fed intravenously.
A video of the candidate walking the corridors of the hospital with the aid of a zimmer-frame (walker), joking with medical staff, was shared online by his son Carlos, a municipal councillor in Rio de Janeiro.
Outside the hospital, a group of about 200 supporters, many of them motorcyclists, rallied in a show of support, waving flags and erecting a giant balloon bearing Bolsonaro's image.
With the October 7 presidential election just three weeks away, doctors have given no indication of when he might be able to leave hospital.
He was first moved from intensive care on Tuesday, but returned after Wednesday's surgery to remove what doctors described as a "bowel obstruction".
Following the stabbing, his campaign managers said he would likely spend 10 days in hospital, but a prolonged stay is now likely.

A judge on Brazil's top electoral court on Friday ordered Twitter to hand over data of 16 users who celebrated via tweets the near-fatal assassination attempt two weeks ago of far-right, poll-leading presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro.Judge Carlos Horbach rejected an appeal from Twitter regarding the request and gave two days for the company to hand over the data, which was requested by the Bolsonaro campaign. The users could potentially face charges under Brazil’s hate crime laws.
Twitter did not immediately reply to a request for comment on the judicial order in its second-biggest market in terms of number of users.
The company has been ordered to hand over user data in various other countries in recent years, and routinely fights such requests in the courts arguing that users own their own data under the social media site's terms of service.
Horbach ruled that Twitter be fined 50,000 reais ($12,345) per day until it complies with the order. It could also be charged with disobedience of an order from the electoral court, a crime that could lead to the arrest of its executives based in Brazil.

According to a report from Reuters, Bolsonaro is considering the relaxation of Brazil’s strict gun laws. For a country besieged by street violence, Bolsonaro’s proposal is a breath of fresh air.

For a law-abiding Brazilian, getting a gun is no walk in the park. They must comply with the following requirements: 1. Be 25 years of age
    2. Hold a license
    3. Pay registration fees
    4. Go through extensive background checks
Thanks to these regulatory hoops, only 3.5% of the Brazilian population legally owned firearms prior to 2004. In sum, Brazil’s current gun control status quo treats gun ownership more like a regulated privilege rather than a right that the masses are free to exercise.

Thankfully, Bolsonaro has not been alone in his advocacy for reforming guns laws. Organizations like the Viva Brazil Movement have taken up the mantle of expanding gun rights in the crime-ridden country. The Viva Brazil Movement came to the spotlight in 2005 when they played an integral role in defeating a referendum that would have banned firearms in Brazil.
Since their victory, the Viva Brazil Movement has continued its push to expand gun rights in Brazil. And now they might get a major political break.

If passed, gun reform would bring much needed sanity to Brazil’s political scene. Brazilian citizens would then have a tool of empowerment in times where corruption and violence are the order of the day.
Win or lose, Bolsonaro has at least opened up the conversation on a historically taboo topic in Latin American politics. If Brazil is able to move in a pro-gun direction, it will serve as a beacon of hope for a Latin American region that is wedded to gun control.

Well, actually, if I'm not mistaken, then this law did not make it through the whole process and was not approved eventually.
Instead, they try to impose stricter gun control rules as Brussels demands.
There is petition against this EU gun control law, signed by the president, too,
and there are some attempts to try to approve amendment in changed form but, overall,
it looks like it was just bargain chip before the parliament election last year.

Jair Bolsonaro - is headed for victory Sunday as Brazilians go to the polls to choose among 13 candidates in the October 7 first-round elections, from which two candidates will emerge. This after he was nearly assassinated a mere month ago when a mentally disturbed socialist man stabbed the populist candidate at a campaign rally, puncturing his intestines in three places, sending him to the intensive care unit. And incredibly telling was that in spite of being absent from the key most-watched TV Globo presidential debate Thursday night due his continued slow recovery from the severe wounds, his name still managed to dominate the national presidential debate.
International media reports widely acknowledged the obvious after the high stakes event that Bolsonaro was "the main topic — and target" among his fellow contenders even as a no-show due to doctor's orders. Though he was merely able to give a televised interview from home, he remains the frontrunner in Sunday's critical elections.

The prospect of a far-right Bolsonaro rapid come-from-behind upset victory has sent a number of media outlets and left-leaning organizations into a frenzied panic, with The Guardian, for example, warning in a Friday headline that the "prospect of Bolsonaro victory stokes fears of return to dictatorship." And The Intercept lamented that Brazil's current frontrunner is a "fiery former army captain with a history of homophobic, racist, and misogynistic remarks, including pro-torture statements and support for police killings."
Weeks before the September 6th stabbing incident, The Economist featured a story outlining how the man who reportedly relishes in being compared to Donald Trump is "a threat to democracy" (at the time the publication described him as "a flame-throwing right-winger who is second in the polls").
But apparently this deluge of attention especially after the gruesome stabbing and attempted assassination thrust him into the international media spotlight has only increased his popularity at the street level even as media elites claim Brazil is on the path of return to dictatorship.

Brazil votes for new president, far-right Bolsonaro in lead

    https://mg.co.za/article/2018-10-07-...sonaro-in-lead

    07 Oct 2018

Brazilians head to the polls on Sunday to elect a new president, with far-right politician Jair Bolsonaro — who promises an iron-fisted crackdown on crime — being the firm favourite going into the first round.

Surveys suggest the 63-year-old former paratrooper, who wants to cut spiralling debt through sweeping privatisations and embrace the United States and Israel, could count on more than one in three voters in the vast Latin American nation.

But at least as many in the 147-million-strong electorate reject the veteran federal lawmaker, who is known for repeated offensive comments against women, gays and the poor, and for lauding the military dictatorship Brazil shucked off just three decades ago.

If Bolsonaro gets more than 50% of the vote to lead the field of 13 candidates, he will win the presidency outright. Otherwise, a run-off will be held on October 28.

Analysts say a first-round victory for Bolsonaro is possible — but unlikely.

The last surveys released late Saturday credited Bolsonaro with 36% against 22% for his nearest rival, leftist former Sao Paulo mayor Fernando Haddad.
With blank and invalid votes stripped out, Bolsonaro could pocket 40-41% of the vote to 25% for Haddad, polling firms Ibope and Datafolha said.

A run-off was seen as too close to call, given the plus-or-minus two-point margin of error, though Bolsonaro was seen with a small edge: 45%, to 41-43% for Haddad.

    Voting marked by ‘fear, anger’
Haddad, 55, has picked up support that still exists for ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the Workers Party icon jailed for corruption who was declared ineligible from making a comeback because of a failed appeal.

While Brazil lived its economic heyday during Lula’s 2003-2010 presidency, it was also plunged into its worst-ever recession under Lula’s chosen successor, Dilma Rousseff, who was impeached and booted from office in 2016 for financial wrongdoing.

Many blame the Workers Party for the country’s current economic malaise.

The result is one of the most polarised elections Brazil has seen. Voter rejection of the two leading candidates is bigger than their polled support.

Voters stuck between the far right and the left are likely to make their choice “more from fear or from anger than from conviction,” said Geraldo Monteiro, a political analyst at Rio de Janeiro State University.

The run-off round could be “even more radical, maybe with violence,” he warned.

The winner will rule the world’s eighth biggest economy: a nation with 210 million inhabitants and abundant natural resources whose top trading partner is China.

Should Bolsonaro become president, he will have to form legislative alliances.

His ultraconservative Social Liberal Party has just eight deputies in the outgoing, 513-seat lower house of congress.

After Sunday’s general election, in which new federal and state legislatures will also be chosen, it might at best pick up only a handful of seats.

But Bolsonaro, a Catholic, is close to the evangelical church lobby that counts many lawmakers. Deputies linked to Brazil’s powerful agro-business lobby are also siding with him.

    A ‘clean’ candidate
Bolsonaro’s profile and anti-crime agenda got an unintended boost a month ago when the far-right candidate was stabbed by a lone assailant who police said had political motives.

Forced off the campaign trail for weeks, Bolsonaro intensified his deft use of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to reach switched-on Brazilians.

In the week before the election, his poll figures soared, while Haddad’s stalled.

Even those opposed to Bolsonaro admit that he is a “clean” candidate, unsullied by corruption scandals that have mired many other politicians.

At a last pro-Bolsonaro rally in the capital Brasilia, supporters said they saw him as a saviour.

“Bolsonaro is the best for the country today — he is the hope of a better country. If we don’t have Bolsonaro, we will become a Venezuela,” said one demonstrating government worker, Cacio de Oliveira.

The current president, Rousseff’s center-right former deputy Michel Temer, is not contesting Sunday’s election.

He will leave office at the end of the year as a deeply unpopular figure in a country suffering with 13 million unemployed, climbing public debt and inflation, and record violence.

Voting on Sunday was to start at 8:00 am (11:00 GMT) and end at 5:00 pm (20:00 GMT), with initial results expected a couple of hours later.

Brazilian presidential election goes to a second round as far-right candidate narrowly misses an outright win - https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...2aa_story.html

SAO PAULO, Brazil — A far-right former military man from the political fringe won nearly half the votes in Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday, raising the strong prospect that he could take the helm of Latin America’s largest nation in a runoff later this month.

Jair Bolsonaro — who has been compared to President Trump for his populist candidacy and polarizing style — was riding a wave of indignation against the corruption in the political class that has governed Brazil since the military dictatorship ended in 1985.

With 97 percent of votes counted, Bolsonaro had 46.5 percent of the vote. That figure put him close to surpassing the 50 percent threshold needed to avoid a runoff on Oct. 28. His closest competitor, the leftist Worker’s Party candidate Fernando Haddad, was running a distant second with 28.6 percent.

Bolsonaro’s performance represented a stunning march forward for a burgeoning global movement of right-wing nationalists who have already captured the top political jobs in the United States, Eastern Europe and the Philippines. Bolsonaro’s strongman approach to politics and his praise for the former military dictatorship have raised fears he would move Brazil away from liberal democracy. Bolsonaro has denied such intentions.

Brazil’s right-wing Bolsonaro narrowly misses first round win in presidential election
    https://www.rt.com/news/440620-brazi...-second-round/

Bolsonaro had gained 46.7 percent of the vote, with over 49 million Brazilians casting their ballots in his favor.
The congressman now heads toward a second-round runoff against Haddad, the former Mayor of São Paulo,
who gained 28.37 percent of the popular support, with over 30 million votes.

    https://twitter.com/ggreenwald/statu...80770520915968

If the 63-year-old succeeds in securing the presidency later this month,
he promises to cut taxes, to generate economic growth and to tackle unemployment.
He also aims to cut government spending and diminish the size of bureaucracy.

Bolsonaro, who appears to favor dictatorship, who had advocated a brutal crackdown on crime and graft ahead of the election,
has an active support from a group of retired generals who stand opposed to the 2003-2016 rule of the Workers Party.
The Congressman publicly advocates military intervention as a way to fight corruption.

With Bolsonaro the clear favorite to win the second round of voting in Latin America’s largest democracy,
Brazil is set to undergo a radical right-wing turn, which some critics are comparing to a rise of fascism.

Question is, will Bolsonaro win the run off. There quite a lot of socialist parties that split the leftist vote. He'll need to open his coalition a little bit for a win.

I don't think they have any good options.

I he their least bad option?

You appear to support any "right wing" politician, no matter what scumbag he is (for example President Donald), because the George Soros supported "left wing" politicians supposedly are even worse.

None other than Steve Bannon has made “right wing” presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro the big winner of the first round of the election.

In August, Bolsonaro's son and congressman, Eduardo Bolsonaro, announced that former chief advisor to Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, would advise Brazilian Presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro for the October elections.
    See Bannon and Bolsonaro.

Bannon had made himself available to help”in the form of giving internet tips, analysis, interpreting data, that type of stuff”: https://www.telesurtv.net/english/ne...0815-0003.html

In a lucky (or unlucky?) circumstance, on 6 September congressman Jair Bolsonaro reportedly was stabbed during a campaign rally for which he had to be operated and spend more than a week in hospital.

Bolsonaro's son, Flavio Bolsonaro, initially tweeted that the injury was superficial and his father was fine. However, an hour later he posted that the wound was "worse than we thought". His son also claimed that Bolsonaro suffered severe blood loss and arrived at the hospital "almost dead".
Police arrested and identified the attacker as Adelio Bispo de Oliveira, who supposedly claimed he was on "a mission from God".
This made his poll numbers rise by 15%.

Bolsonaro said during a campaign event that he would like to shoot corrupt members of the leftist Workers' Party: https://www.smh.com.au/world/south-a...07-p502a1.html

See the video of the stabbing (it doesn’t look convincing to me).

The forces that drove former Army captain Jair Bolsonaro to take an overwhelming lead in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election also turned the country’s Congress upside down. Bolsonaro’s party, the PSL, jumped from eight seats to 52 in the lower house, while the Workers’ Party of Fernando Haddad, the runner-up, lost five seats to 56.At the same time, some of the most senior lawmakers -- several of them who had been investigated for corruption -- have been ousted. Senator Romero Juca, who has been in his post for over 23 years and served as government leader under four governments, lost his seat in the upper house.

In November 2017, the Brazilian Ponte Estratégia Planejamento e Pesquisa LTDA, announced a partnership with Cambridge Analytica (that it is more named than its London based parent company SCL Group) – CA Ponte.

In March, the controversy erupted over Cambridge Analytica’s illegal use of Facebook data, and Brazilian prosecutors said they had opened an investigation into whether the SCL Group had acted illegally in Brazil by using the data of millions of Brazilians (violating the non-existent Brazilian privacy laws?).
Director of CA Ponte, Andre Torretta, responded by claiming that the partnership with SCL was suspended and changed its name back to Ponte Estrategia, but in reality “it won’t change anything, in spite of all this confusion”…

It has been announced that CA Ponte was in touch with representatives of 3 presidential candidates in Brazil, but not all the names have been disclosed. Steve Bannon, who performed his magic on Jair Bolsonaro’s campaign, was/is of course part of the SCL Group.
The only named party is the Social Democracy Party, then chaired by Tasso Jereissati, but supposedly they didn't finalise the deal: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article...nd-partnership

WhatsApp is a communication service with an estimated 900 million users worldwide acquired by Facebook in 2014. WhatsApp allows voice and video messages, and sharing of images, PDF’s and location.
WhatsApp groups constitutes the majority of online communication in many parts of the third world.

WhatsApp helps politicians target voters in areas that otherwise don't have access to the internet.
Firms that manipulate elections (like SCL) actually pay people for the information they have collected on the electorate.

In Latin America internet access is (almost) limited to: WhatsApp, YouTube, Facebook, Google Maps and Facebook Messenger. WhatsApp also plays a major role in Brazilian politics, with around 120 million users in Brazil it’s one of the main sources of information.
Brazil doesn’t have a general data protection law and the buying and selling of databases is done almost without restrictions.

CEO of Ponte Estratégia, André Torreta, explained that WhatsApp is the most influential network in the 2018 elections in Brazil. Ponte Estratégia can send up to 10 messages a day via WhatsApp – first by identifying target audiences through surveys, and then by assembling a database of phone numbers to transmit messages.
Favourite presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro has used WhatsApp messages more actively than other candidate.

WhatsApp is often used to spread fake news or disinformation by young (usually) men, who are paid to send masses of messages. See for example the following WhatsApp that shows a politician paycheck of around 31,000 Euros (received on 23 May 2018) but is completely FAKE.

In Malaysia region-specific WhatsApp groups were created as a form of micro-targeting.
Gerakan vice president Dominic Lau, said his party could receive a list of 8,000 voters from the paramilitary civil volunteer corps, with names, IC numbers and phone numbers.
For the past 5 years, Lau has been sending SMSs to these Batu voters to give birthday wishes or seasonal greetings during major festivities, which is very “effective”.

In Kenya, aspirants collected phone numbers and voter details of the people they met on campaign. Their staff and supporters also joined many groups to collect phone numbers and other voter information.
In Kenya, data can even be obtained from election databases. Data can also also be bought from “traders” that sell a bulk SMS package: https://ourdataourselves.tacticaltec...osts/whatsapp/
