Shark Attacks Swimmer At Cape Cod Beach

TRURO (CBS) – A swimmer was attacked and seriously injured by a shark at a Cape Cod beach Wednesday afternoon. The Truro Harbormaster says the man was bitten by a shark at Longnook Beach at about 4:15 p.m.

The man suffered puncture wounds to his hip and torso. He was taken to Wellfleet and then loaded onto a Medflight helicopter to be flown to Tufts Medical Center. The AP is reporting the man is 61 years old.

It was two recent graduates of the Boston College nursing school who first rushed to the man’s aid, using towels to stop his bleeding. They told WBZ-TV’s Louisa Moller it was clear that he had been bitten by a shark.

“We’re walking, people start running in the other direction saying a man had been in a shark attack,” said Molly Tobin. “So having just graduated from Boston College nursing, we were like OK lets go see if there’s anything we can do to help.”

There were few seals, plenty of cod, and not many great white sharks. (can you call them "great" whites anymore? or are those words prohibited to be put together in the same sentence?)

Now the tree huggers and bleeding hearts have protected the seals, creating a plague of them, that eat the cod (seals are notorious for ripping out a cod belly, and leaving the rest of the fish to rot) that in turn attract a plague of sharks.

Kinda interesting that some Orcas just eat a great CaucASIAN sharks liver and leaves the rest to rot. A mammal thing?

When we accept or even welcome automobile checkpoints, random searches, mandatory identification cards, and paramilitary police in our streets, we have lost a vital part of our American heritage. I knew Mark Rackley (the "Shark Whisperer"),, and have been in the water with sharks as well.

He gets a lot closer a lot more often.

There was a great white shark siting at the beach I was surfing at a few days ago, line up cleared out for a short time then it was back to business as usual. They are mostly juveniles at that spot tho, they don't start attacking humans until they are larger and start attacking larger prey.

I was on a surf trip, so I surfed there about 6 times in 4 days.

I know plenty of people who consider themselves environmentalists and ocean going folks in California who say there is a huge over-population of seals which is leading to an over-population of great white sharks. I've even heard a few suggest that seals not be a protected species so that they can be hunted.

Well in that case great white sharks never attack humans. We are way too boney, they are expecting a blubbery seal or turtle or something.

But if you get "tasted" by a 18 foot great white shark, you will probably die.

A February 2010 study by Barbara Block of Stanford University estimated the world population of great white sharks to be lower than 3,500 individuals, making the species more vulnerable to extinction than the tiger, whose population is in the same range.[94] According to another study from 2014 by George H. Burgess, Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida, there are about 2,000 great white sharks near the California coast, which is 10 times higher than the previous estimate of 219 by Barbara Block.[95][96]
Doesn't sound like many to me.

First of all, there is absolutely no debate that the seal population is completely out of control and they are a food source for great whites which means their population is on the rise.

2,000 near the California coast is a lot, and might still be a low estimate.. there is a breeding ground up near San Francisco and a birthing ground a bit west of So Cal but if that is true, the world population is much higher than 3,500.. What about Oregon, Washington, Vancouver, Mexico, Central and South America in the Western Pacific?

California rarely has shark attacks compared to other areas.

What about South Africa, West Africa and the Indian Ocean near Madagascar in particular (have you heard of Reunion Island??) and Australia have huge populations of Great Whites, probably higher than California based on the number of attacks on humans.. and I haven't even gotten to the east coast which does have some... then there is Brazil.

But let's get back to your studies - the California study that estimated 2,000 was ten times higher than the previous estimate. I would guess the real number of great whites worldwide is 4-10 times the previous estimate of 3,500.
