Police officer hits, kills another cop setting up spike strips in Kent, Washington

Police officer killed during chase by fellow officer
    Email
A Kent, Washington, police officer died in the line of duty while trying to stop a car chase.

Officer Diego Moreno was in the process of trying to stop a suspect who was fleeing by deploying spike strips.

The eight year veteran of the force was hit by another officer while trying to release the strips.

Officers first responded after receiving calls about a shooting just before 2 a.m. Monday, police said.

When deputies arrived on scene, they spotted the suspect in a red pickup truck attempting to flee the area, police reported.

While in the process of trying to chase down the vehicle, an officer struck Moreno, who was out of his car attempting to use the spike strips.

The officer then collided with three other cars at an intersection. The second officer injured is in stable condition, police said.

“Make no question about this, were it not for the actions of this suspect or suspects, this officer would be alive today. It’s directly because of the suspect or suspect’s actions that led to the officer’s death,” Washington State Patrol Capt. Ron Mead said at a news conference.

The suspect also crashed and was taken into custody.

As of Monday, a passenger has since been arrested as well, police said.

Officials will provide an update after the investigation has concluded.

Emiliano Garcia, 16, was charged as an adult with second-degree felony murder, accused of causing the death of Kent Police Officer Diego Moreno, 35, by leading police on a dangerous, high-speed chase early Sunday.

By Agueda Pacheco-Flores and Sara Jean Green
    Seattle Times staff reporter
After a night of drinking at a quinceañera to celebrate a girl’s 15th birthday, 16-year-old Emiliano Garcia and a group of friends met up at El Habanero, a Kent bar and restaurant on West Meeker Street, and continued drinking beer despite being underage.

As the bar was closing early Sunday, Garcia’s friends and a group of older men got into an argument outside. Guns were drawn and dozens of shots were fired into the air. Police would later collect 39 shell casings in three different calibers from four different weapons off the pavement. As far as police can tell, no one was hit.

Garcia, who doesn’t have a driver’s license, then reportedly climbed behind the wheel of his father’s red pickup with two passengers, both 17, on board, say police and prosecutors. Without turning on his headlights, Garcia peeled out of the parking lot with a Kent police officer in pursuit. Over the next few minutes, speeds would reach 95 miles an hour and a police officer would die.

On Wednesday, Garcia was charged as an adult with second-degree felony murder, accused of causing the death of Kent police Officer Diego Moreno, 35, by leading police on a dangerous, high-speed chase that ended after at least one of Garcia’s tires was punctured and he lost control, flipping the pickup on Highway 516. Moreno died when he was struck by a pursuing Kent police SUV after laying out a strip of spikes to slow the fleeing pickup.

King County prosecutors explained in a news release that felony murder occurs when a defendant commits a felony and as a result of that crime — or fleeing from that crime — causes the death of another person. As a direct result of Garcia’s actions, Moreno was killed, it says.

Just think of how many cops' lives we could save by simply abolishing professional police forces. It's for their children.

Drugs are dangerous kids, look what they made this Officer do!

Trigger-Happy Cop Shot One of His Own and Kept Blasting Away

A detective who worked narcotics with an undercover officer walked up to a car, shot his fellow officer twice, and then seven more times against the victim’s pleas.

The number of signs that Albuquerque Police Lieutenant Greg Brachle ignored or didn’t see before putting nine .45-caliber bullets into his fellow officer’s body are simply staggering.

But then there'd be nothing to prevent armed gangs from establishing dominance and enforcing their own rules of law that we never consented or agreed to

An off-duty St. Louis police officer was fatally shot early this morning in south city by one of her fellow cops, authorities say.

Police say it was an accident. Chief John Hayden told reporters during an early morning news conference the 24-year-old female officer was shot in the chest in the home of another officer in the Carondelet neighborhood.

In a news release provided later in the morning, police identified the 24-year-old Officer Katlyn Alix, who had graduated from the police academy in January 2017.

The chief said two male officers, both 29 years old, were on duty when they went to a home where one of them lived, Fox 2 reported. Alix also stopped by and was shot about 1 a.m. when one of her colleague's guns went off. In the news release, police say the two on-duty officers met Alix at the house.

One of the male officers "mishandled" a gun while sitting in the living room of the apartment and shot Alix. The third officer called in the shooting and told a dispatcher that he and the other cop Alix had been shot and they were taking her to the hospital. She died shortly after arriving.

St. Louis officer charged after deadly game with revolver

A male St. Louis police officer was charged Friday with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of a female officer during what was described as a deadly game with a revolver.

Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner announced the charge against Nathaniel Hendren, 29, in the death of 24-year-old Katlyn Alix, as they allegedly played a game in which a revolver's cylinder was emptied, one bullet put back and the two colleagues took turns pointing at each other and pulling the trigger.

Alix was with two male officers at an apartment when she was killed just before 1 a.m. Thursday . A probable cause statement from police, provided by Gardner's office, offered a chilling account of the dangerous game that led to her death.

The probable cause statement said Alix and Hendren were playing with guns when Hendren produced a revolver.

"The defendant emptied the cylinder of the revolver and then put one cartridge back into the cylinder," the statement said. He allegedly spun the cylinder, pointed the gun away and pulled the trigger.

The gun did not fire. The statement said Alix took the gun, pointed it at Hendren and pulled the trigger. Again, it didn't fire.

Hendren "took the gun back and pointed it at the victim (and) pulled the trigger causing the gun to discharge," the statement said. "The victim was struck in the chest."

The other male officer told investigators he warned Hendren and Alix not to play with guns and reminded them they were police officers. He was about to leave when he heard the fatal shot, the statement said.

No way that's the real story, those two cops were on-duty and at one of their homes (in the city - Southside) and not even in their on-duty District and then that off-duty cop woman shows up and is shot, and this was all in the "middle of night."

Update: Yeah, I believe this one, now the shooter is saying they were playing Russian Roulette.... probably will never know.

    https://heavy.com/news/2019/01/nathaniel-hendren/

Nathaniel Hendren is accused of firing the fatal bullet that killed off-duty St. Louis police officer Katlyn Alix, in what authorities allege was a round of reckless gunplay. He was working on duty as a police officer himself at the time.

Alix, 24, died after being shot in the chest inside a home. Police originally said that Alix’s death was an accidental shooting and initially withheld other specifics about what happened in the early morning hours.

On January 25, 2019, however, the officer who allegedly fired the bullet that killed Alix – Nathaniel Hendren, 29 – was identified and charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter and armed criminal action. Both charges are felonies.

The St. Louis circuit attorney's office has publicly criticized police, saying they obstructed an investigation into last week's fatal shooting of an officer and prematurely labeled it an accident.

In a letter Monday to St. Louis Metropolitan Police Commissioner John Hayden and Public Safety Director Jimmie Edwards, Circuit Attorney Kimberly M. Gardner wrote there was probable cause that drugs or alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the shooting of Katlyn Alix, a 24-year-old police officer.
Hendren has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the first degree and armed criminal action relating to the death of a fellow police officer.

Despite the existence of probable cause, Gardner wrote that prosecutors were not allowed to take a blood test of Hendren and an unnamed on-duty officer also present.

They were later informed that a urine analysis and a breath test, which are less exact than a blood test, had been taken under Garrity rights. These are warnings that public employees have a right to remain silent.

"Taking these tests under the cover of Garrity appears as an obstructionist tactic to prevent us from understanding the state of the officers during the commission of this alleged crime," Gardner wrote in the letter.

The circuit attorney said that police initially told investigators that the shooting was an "accident," and also characterized it as a "mishandling" of a firearm.
Gardner's letter called such conclusions troubling.

"In my opinion, it is completely inappropriate for investigators to approach a crime scene that early in the investigation with a pre-disposed conclusion about the potential outcome of a case," she wrote. "It's particularly troublesome given that the Force Investigative Unit is required to conduct objective investigations of officer-involved shootings.

Cop Arrested in Florida for Murdering His Own Police Chief in a Hotel

Pensacola, FL — The numbers do not lie. Police in America are the deadliest throughout the entire world. American cops kill far more than their counterparts in the rest of the world and these numbers are indisputable. One indicator that the problem has gotten out of hand is the fact that cops are killing cops. In a tragic case out of Florida this week, a police officer killed his own police chief.

Mannford police officer Michael Patrick Nealey, 49, has been arrested and charged with the murder of Mannford police chief Lucky Miller, 44. The duo traveled from the small town of Mannford, Oklahoma for a conference in Pensacola over the weekend when things took a tragic turn.

The two men were staying at the Hilton on Pensacola Beach over the weekend for a law enforcement conference, said Escambia County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Amber Southard. During their stay, authorities say an alcohol fueled brawl broke out between the pair.

On Sunday, hotel security was called because the two men were disrupting the other guests. When hotel security responded, they called the sheriff’s department because the scene had turned violent.

“An actual physical altercation,” Southard said.

According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s department, when deputies arrived on the scene, Miller was dead. Police say there was no weapon — implying that Nealey may have beaten Miller to death. An autopsy is underway.

“We are heartbroken by the news,” Mannford Mayor Tyler Buttram said in a statement.

It is obviously a tragic case of PTSD.

I can't think of anything else that could explain this behaviour from these fine men.

I'm sure the court will take this into account so the poor officer can receive the help he needs and can be back to work as soon as possible.

Yes, one tragedy is enough. No need to ruin a fine officers life and career over one mistake.

I suppose that these tragedies count toward the nationwide "gun deaths" figure which anti-gun people like to cite.
