Barack Obama is greatest president of our lifetime, 44% of Americans say in Pew survey

Barack Obama is greatest president of our lifetime, 44% of Americans say in Pew survey
The Pew Research Center asked Americans who they thought did the best job as president in their lifetime. The top pick: former President Barack Obama.

Obama was the choice of 44 percent of the respondents in the poll, which was published Wednesday. Bill Clinton came in second with 33 percent and Ronald Reagan was third with 32 percent. Although not yet even halfway through his first term, President Donald Trump got 19 percent to place him in fourth place, ahead of both Bushes, John F. Kennedy and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

According to Pew, Obama got 20 percent at about the same point in his presidency.

The survey was conducted from June 5-12 and 2,002 people were asked to give both their first and second choices. It has an error margin of 2.6 points.

Obviously, when someone lived is key to who they think was the best president of their lifetime. For example, of those who were alive during the Kennedy administration, about a quarter chose JFK.

Millennials (born 1981 to 1996) were the most likely to choose Obama, with 62 percent naming him as their first or second choice. Reagan was the top pick for Generation X (1965 to 1980), baby boomers (1946 to 1964) and the silent generation (1928 to 1945).

Unsurprisingly, party identification was very closely tied to a person's answer. Obama was the first or second pick of 71 percent of Democrats but only 13 percent of Republicans.

Reagan was the clear favorite among Republicans with 57 percent (12 percent among Democrats). Trump was the second pick for Republicans at 40 percent. Only 3 percent of Democrats named Trump.

The coolest thing is that the Bushes got 6% between the two of them!

Seriously though, I'm not sure how I'd answer that question. Maybe Ford?? He seemed to do the least amount of damage, anyway.

Well, to be fair, the question was about who was the greatest President of "your" lifetime. Anyone under 57 couldn't even select him. In reality, you'd have to be about 70 or so to even remember what he had done.

Trump is the most stable - 1st vs. 2nd choice - and Obama in 2018 got Clinton's votes from 2011.

Final verdict - progressives are unstable and change their views on a whim.

Key being "during your lifetime" so it favors more recent presidents since more people were alive during their presidency. One quarter of adults (18 and over) were not even alive when Reagan was in office for example.

Clinton legalized blow jobs but it didn't come without costs.

Well, at least I can stand to look at him.

That said- the best one's on the list were probably Carter, he was the only peacetime president, and JFK, who woke up to the Deep State & alphabets running the country. Ike, too, for at least warning us at the end of his presidency.

    Cool

Obama, Reagan and Clinton have roughly 65% if the top three totals in one of the polls
is added together? Other years gave Clinton more support, but Reagan is consistent? The
10% Trump has is his core group inside the GOP that let him pick up some of the early
primaries. There was a shift of Democrats from Clinton to Obama? The number of people
who can remember what JFK did decreases with each passing year. His 7% is a significant
number, given the demographics of each age group. These polls aggragately say things...

A significant piece of that percentage is made up of blacks.

Only 38% was even alive when Kennedy was President. Poll asks which president from their lifetime was best.

Poll was weighted- any white or black or brown or orange poll participants were allotted points based on their percent of the overall population. Since 12.6% of the census participants identified as "African American", the people participating in this poll who also identified themselves as "African American" counted as 12.6% of the results. A standard practice in polls.

You have never seen pollsters oversampling a subset of a population?

Nearly all polls end up with an over-sampling of at least one group. Weighting adjusts for that.

Ahh, sorta like how the polling for the Presidential election was weighted too heavily in the anti-Trump direction.

Trump did lose the popular vote and the final results were within the margin of error.
