In times of war or siege, Italian families would vacate their homes and rent apartments in safer areas. In order to protect themselves they would hire soldiers to sleep on the floor in shifts.
Ordinarily we would want to verify such stories before publishing them here as part of a phrase derivation. In this case though it isn't really important. The meaning of the phrase turns on the association in Italian folk-memory of mattresses with safety in wartime. The phrase wasn't well known outside of the USA and Italy prior to the Godfather movies. It was used there, and later in The Sopranos television series, to mean 'preparing for battle'. Whether or not the stories that originated it are true doesn't alter the fact that the screenwriters of those films used them in that context.

And history will record us as an anachronism... a vestige of a "failed, selfish ideology" that HATED poor people and minorities and anyone else who can be elevated to advance the cause. And it will be because it's a whole lot easier to rely on everyone else than it is to make your own way in the world.
The West is dead. And by that I mean Western Civilization and also the American WEST, where the true spirit of individualism expanded and grew... isn't it ironic that, besides NY and Massachusetts, that's also where it fell?

Man, you guys are a real downer, you know that? You're also, IMO, very much mistaken. While there are reasons for serious concern, things are not nearly so bleak as you're making them out to be. Not even close.
If you're open to it I'd suggest paying a lot less attention to the lamestream media, the Trumpcentric right wing, alt-right and "libertarian" [sic] online news sources, and the Trumptastic goings on here on RPF and spend a little time listening to some of the people who are actually out there in the trenches spreading the actual principles of liberty, and making significant progress. Their outlook is a WHOLE LOT more positive than what I see around here every day, and apparently with good reason.
Try checking out Jeff Berwick's Anarchast podcast, anything by Larken Rose, or some of Jeffrey Tucker's stuff. All of those guys, and many more, are actually optimistic about the future for liberty here in the US and even worldwide. Larken Rose even stated that he thinks, based upon the geometric growth in Voluntaryism he's seen in his own work over the last few years, that it's possible that we could actually see a statelss society here in the US within a mere 20 years! I couldn't find where I actually saw him say that, but here's a short clip that illustrates the point:

It’s easy to imagine that “the powers that be” are all-knowing and all-powerful. But they are neither. And often even pro-freedom people do themselves and others a disservice by overestimating the power of the parasite class. After all, if the good people imagine that the ruling class knows everything and can do anything, those good people will likely self-censor and self-limit, for fear of the all-knowing, all-powerful rulers squashing them if they do, say, or think anything out of line. The irony is that if an aspiring tyrant can get people to think that way, and imagine that to be reality, then the tyrant doesn’t need to have any actual power at all. If the subject class can be scared into passive, quiet submission and obedience, it doesn’t really matter if what they were scared of is real or not.
At the same time, underestimating the nastiness and power of those in “government” can also be hazardous. So it behooves good people to figure out just what the control freaks are, and are not, actually capable of. And in order for average people to understand the reality of the situation, it’s helpful to occasionally picture the world from the viewpoint of the political sociopath...
