Melania Sent To Border For Charm Offensive As Trump Promises To Reunite Separated Families

First Lady Melania Trump made an unannounced visit to a Texas social services center on Thursday amid a crisis over migrant children who have been forcibly separated from their parents as part of the DOJ's "zero-tolerance" enforcement of preexisting laws.

"I'm glad I'm here and I'm looking forward to seeing the children," said the First Lady at a roundtable with doctors and other employees of the Upbring New Hope Children's Center, which is a subsidiary of Lutheran Social Services of the South.
"But first of all, let me begin to recognize each of you and thanking you for all that you do, for your heroic work that you do every day and what you do for those children. We all know they're here without their families, and I want to thank you for your hard work."

Her visit comes one day after President Trump signed an executive order which would end the controversial practice of separating children from parents who cross the border illegally - a longstanding practice under prior administrations - which was supercharged by the Trump administration's new "zero tolerance" enforcement policies.

    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 21, 2018
Trump said Melania "is down now at the border because it really bothered her to be looking at this and to seeing it, as it bothered me, as it bothered everybody at this table."

To that end, Trump ordered U.S. agencies to reunite separated migrant families on Thursday.
“I’m directing HHS, DHS, DOJ to work together to keep illegal immigrant families together during the immigration process and reunite these previously separated groups,”’ Trump said.

Did Melania Trump Wear This Jacket When Visiting Children Separated from Their Families?

The First Lady made a surprise visit to detained immigrant children while wearing a jacket bearing the message "I DON'T REALLY CARE DO U?" on the back.

    CLAIM
First Lady Melania Trump visited immigrant kids wearing a jacket with "I DON'T REALLY CARE DO U?" emblazoned on the back.

    RATING
    TRUE

    ORIGIN
On 21 June 2018, First Lady Melania Trump paid a surprise visit to immigrant children detained under a Trump administration policy to separate families at the border. Shortly thereafter, the news of her visit was eclipsed by discussion stemming from social media images of a jacket she was purportedly wearing as she boarded her plane:

The First Lady’s army-green jacket with a painted design on the back reading “I REALLY DON’T CARE DO U?” quickly became the dominant topic of news and social media. CNN’s Jim Acosta quickly confirmed that the photographs were legitimate, and the article of clothing Mrs. Trump wore was real.

Melania Trump 'hates to see' children separated from their families at borders

In a rare statement on a policy issue, first lady Melania Trump weighed in through her spokeswoman on the immigration crisis taking place at America's borders.

"Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform," her communications director, Stephanie Grisham, told CNN on Sunday. "She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart."

Trump, who has made helping children the crux of her official "Be Best" platform as first lady, had yet to discuss the state of families and immigration, a topic that has been prominent in headlines for days.

A Trump administration policy now charges every adult caught crossing the border illegally with federal crimes, as opposed to referring those with children mainly to immigration courts, as previous administrations did. Because the government is charging the parents in the criminal justice system, children are separated from them, without a clear procedure for their reunification aside from hotlines the parents can call to try to track their children down.

The policy to refer all adults for charges was publicly announced May 7, but the Justice Department announced it would prosecute 100% of the cases referred to it at the beginning of April.

Nearly 2,000 children have been separated from their parents and guardians and placed into holding facilities between April 19 and May 31 of this year, Department of Homeland Security spokesman Jonathan Hoffman told reporters Friday on a conference call.

The public outcry in the wake of images and stories of the children caught in the middle of the controversial immigration policy has sparked fierce debate.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly blamed the Democrats for the situation despite his administration instituting the policy change.
Perhaps she is why he changed his position on the issue. More at link.

Just reminding everyone Melania is an immigrant herself. Maybe she needs to tell her story and show how unjust the system really is.

His mother was a child immigrant- 17 when she left Scotland- with a bunch of other immigrants and her sister (who had come to America previously) for the US to look for work. Her sister brought her. Chain migration. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-38648877

His grandfather came to the US as a teenager too- from Germany. He spoke little English and allegedly ran away to avoid compulsory military service. His was "chain migration" as well- he came to join his sister here. https://www.forbes.com/sites/stuarta.../#6fb14139e49a

The 16-year-old Friedrich Trump, who spoke little English, would not have hopped on a ship and came to America without a family member already in place to help him. In 1885, when Friedrich immigrated, he joined his sister Katherine, who “had immigrated to New York a year earlier,” according to Gwenda Blair.
Neither mentions travelling with parents so they would have been "unaccompanied minors".

Trump's first wife was from Czechoslovakia. She married an Austrian ski instructor only to get a visa to the US and divorced shortly after getting here. She did not become a citizen until 11 years after she married Trump.

He was lucky the President at the time changed the laws.

On March 9, 1897, Grover Cleveland vetoed a broad immigration bill that would have excluded any immigrant to the U.S. who could not read and write. In his veto message, he called the legislation “a radical departure from our national policy” on immigration.

“We have encouraged those coming from foreign countries to cast their lot with us and join in the development of our vast domain, securing in return a share in the blessings of American citizenship,” declared Cleveland. “A century's stupendous growth, largely due to the assimilation and thrift of millions of sturdy and patriotic adopted citizens, attests the success of this generous and free-handed policy which, while guarding the people's interests, exacts from our immigrants only physical and moral soundness and a willingness and ability to work.”

President Cleveland warned the threat to the American people came not from immigrants without education, but from a skillful communicator: “In my opinion, it is infinitely more safe to admit a hundred thousand immigrants who, though unable to read and write, seek among us only a home and opportunity to work than to admit one of those unruly agitators . . . who can not only read and write, but delights in arousing by inflammatory speech the illiterate and peacefully inclined to discontent and tumult.”

During World War I, German immigrants and German-Americans like the Trumps became a focus of hostility. “The fury that broke upon the German-Americans in 1915 represented the most spectacular reversal of judgment in the history of American nativism,” wrote John Higham in Strangers in the Land. In what sounds strikingly similar to Donald Trump’s claim that “thousands” of Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the attacks of 9/11, Higham writes, “By August there was common talk that German-Americans were rejoicing over the death of American citizens on torpedoed ships.”

According to a new Rasmussen poll, a majority of Americans blame illegal immigrant parents for the child crisis on the border over the U.S. government.
The media has put a hyper focus on the separation of families at the border over the last several weeks, leading President Donald Trump to sign an executive order ending the separation. Current U.S. law does not allow families to be detained together if the parents are referred for prosecution for illegal border crossing.
However, the Rasmussen poll shows that Americans don’t blame the Trump administration for the approximately 2,000 children who have been separated from their parents.
54 percent of likely voters polled by Rasmussen said that they think the parents are more to blame for breaking the law.
Only 35 percent said the government is more to blame for the crisis.
Further, 54 percent of voting Americans agree with President Trump’s assertion that “The United States will not be a migrant camp. And it will not be a refugee-holding facility — it won’t be.”
The survey of 1000 likely voters was conducted on June 19-20.

I don't buy it but for the sake of argument, if that is the reason then shame on her for such a tasteless display that is unbecoming of the office. If this is what our governance has truly devolved into, then one must wonder if the goal isn't to purposely degrade the office. That couldn't be it, could it?
