Norway has asked the U.S. to more than double the number of Marines in the country amid growing fears of Russia.
The U.S. currently has around 330 Marines in Norway on a winter warfare training deployment. They arrived in early 2017, marking the first time foreign troops were stationed in Norway since World War II.
But Olso says that's not enough. Norway and several other NATO member states near Russia recently called for a larger military footprint in their region.
Norway will ask the U.S. for a total of 700 Marines on a five-year deployment. They'd reportedly be stationed even closer to the Russian border than those 330 are now — only about 250 miles away.

Russia vowed on Thursday to retaliate for a plan by Norway to more than double the number of U.S. Marines stationed there.Oslo announced on Tuesday that it would ask the United States, its NATO ally, to send 700 Marines to train in Norway from 2019, against 330 at present, and said the additional troops would be based closer to the Russian border.
"This makes Norway less predictable and could cause growing tensions, triggering an arms race and destabilizing the situation in northern Europe," the Russian Embassy said in a statement on its Facebook page.
"We see it as clearly unfriendly, and it will not remain free of consequence."
Oslo has grown increasingly concerned about Russia since Moscow annexed of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014, while adding that it does not regard its much larger neighbor as a direct threat.
The U.S. Marines were scheduled to leave at the end of this year after an initial contingent arrived in January 2017 to train for winter conditions. They are the first foreign troops to be stationed in Norway since World War Two.
The initial decision to welcome the Marines had prompted Moscow to say it would worsen bilateral relations and escalate tensions on NATO's northern flank.
On Wednesday, Russia's Northern Fleet launched a large naval exercise in the Arctic Barents Sea. Later this year, Norway will host its biggest NATO maneuver in decades.

Speaking at the Naval War College Tuesday, General Robert B. Neller said the approval for additional Marines in Norway cleared on Tuesday. Neller has been an advocate for sending Marines to extreme cold-weather environments for Arctic warfare training.

The Marines are currently on six-month rotations to Norway, where soldiers are preparing for cold-weather warfare to counter Russia.

Four women and one man were killed in the attack, while three people were injured.

(CNN)Norwegian police have named the suspect in Wednesday's bow-and-arrow attack that left five people dead as 37-year-old Espen Andersen Bråthen.


Earlier, police said they were treating the attack as an act of terror after officers revealed the suspect had converted to Islam and that they had concerns about his radicalization.
The investigation "will clarify in more detail what the incidents were motivated by," the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) said Thursday in a statement.
"The police have previously been in contact with the man, including as a result of previous concerns related to radicalization," police chief Ole Bredrup Sæverud said Thursday.

The suspect had not appeared on their radar this year though, Sæverud indicated, saying the police had "received no reports in 2021 regarding radicalization."
