"A politician will do almost anything to keep their job, even become a patriot" - Hearst
While working on Ron Paul's 2012 Presidential Campaign I was told by someone, who was in a position to know, that our internal communications were being monitored by the government (this was prior to Snowden's revelations).
Consequently this comes as no surprise. I suspect they have been doing this since the Kennedy days.

Does he realize what he is admitting to?
Trump is letting these people hang themselves and they are doing it in spades.

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said on Tuesday that the FBI’s use of an informant for the Trump campaign in 2016 was appropriate, joining top Democrats in disputing President Donald Trump’s characterization of the informant as a spy.
“I am even more convinced that the FBI did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got, and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump,” Gowdy said during an interview on Fox News.

Another one exposes himself:
Alan Dershowitz said he's "halfway persuaded" that the FBI acted properly in sending an informant into the Trump campaign.
On "America's Newsroom" on Wednesday, Dershowitz, a Harvard Law professor emeritus, said he's "relatively satisfied" with Gowdy's assurances that the FBI acted properly.
"Whenever you get any kind of an informer anywhere near a campaign, there has to be an assurance that it was not political or partisan in nature," Dershowitz said. "I'm about halfway persuaded now by Congressman Gowdy's statement."
He said he would like to hear the Justice Department inspector general's findings and he would like to see the facts for himself, but he's "on the way to being persuaded."
