Will North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un win Nobel Peace Prize?

Will North Korea's Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un win Nobel Peace Prize?

Recently there has been lot of buzz about NK's KJU and Trump winning Nobel Peace prize but chances for Trump's Peace Prize seem to have diminished after controversial NYDailyNews cover about killing of large number of Palestinian civilians went viral.

    Update 1:

Lately, NBA legend Dennis Rodman's name is also being floated as a major player behind these talks.

Dennis Rodman takes credit for pushing North Korean talks
Former NBA star Dennis Rodman in a new interview said he believes his work in North Korea “resonated” to facilitate the current talks over Pyongyang’s nuclear program.
“And I don’t want to take all the credit. I don’t want to sit here and say ‘I did this. I did that.’ No, that’s not my intention,” he said.
But Rodman added that he believes his work as a sports ambassador to Pyongyang “resonated.”

If Rodman's assertions about his key role in peace talks are confirmed by Nobel awards committee, could both Chairman Kim and Rodman win Nobel Peace prizes?

Yes, Kim Jong Un is receiving an international peace prize

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visits the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, where the statues of President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il are standing during the 62nd anniversary of the end of the Korean War in this undated photo released by North Korea's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) in Pyongyang on July 27. Kim Jong Un is hardly a man short on accolades – the problem is, most are given out by the North Korean state. Later this year, however, the North Korean leader will finally gain some international recognition, joining the likes of Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi and India’s Mahatma Gandhi in receiving a statesmanship award from an Indonesian-based organization.
The accolade, given out by the Bali-based Sukarno Education Foundation, honors Kim for his "peace, justice and humanity," Agence France Presse reports. The North Korean leader is due to receive the award in September.

Hard to tell what is what these days but this appears to be fakenews:

    Kim Jong-un receives Nobel Prize

    1/17/2013

North Korea's young president, Kim Jong-un, won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his
efforts to end the Korean War and bring a lasting peace to the Korean Peninsula. The result
of more than a year of intensive negotiations, the government of the two sister nations
were finally able to carve out a peace treaty and have reportedly begun discussing re-
unification under what has been described as a "one nation, two-system solution". Born in
North Korea and educated in Switzerland, Jong-un cites his overseas education and exposure
to the west as the driving force behind his desire to see the reconciliation of the two nations.
North and South have been divided for nearly 70 years, and for his efforts Kim Jong-
un is being hailed as "The Great Unifier".

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in met for the second time in a month on Saturday to discuss carrying out the peace commitments they reached in their first summit and Kim's potential meeting with President Donald Trump, Moon's office said.
South Korean presidential spokesman Yoon Young-chan said Moon will reveal the outcome of his surprise meeting with Kim on Sunday. The presidential Blue House did not immediately provide more details.

It's likely that there will be a trilateral meeting between Trump, Kim, and Moon where they officially end the Korean War.

Moon is the only one who has a case for the prize though.

Seth Meyers says Dennis Rodman played set up man for Trump, Kim

Eileen Rivers, USA TODAY Published June 13, 2018

The confusion on North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un's face told the whole story, said late-night comic Seth Meyers. The leader was clearly wondering how he got to the summit with President Trump in the first place. It comes down to two words: Dennis Rodman.

Rival Koreas agree to August reunions of war-split families

    • By kim tong-hyung, associated press

SEOUL, South Korea — Jun 22, 2018, 7:46 AM ET

    The Associated Press
WATCH Kim Jong Un makes third surprise visit to China in less than 3 months

North and South Korea agreed Friday to hold temporary reunions of families divided by the 1950-53 Korean War as they boost reconciliation efforts amid a diplomatic push to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis.
The reunions will take place at North Korea's Diamond Mountain resort from Aug. 20 to 26, Seoul's Unification Ministry said after a nine-hour meeting between Red Cross officials from the two sides.
It said the countries will each send 100 participants to the reunions. People with mobility problems will be allowed to bring a relative to help them.
Such temporary reunions are highly emotional as most wishing to take part are elderly people who are eager to see their loved ones before they die. The families were driven apart during the turmoil of the war.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in agreed during a summit in April to hold the family reunions about Aug. 15, the anniversary of the Korean Peninsula's independence from Japanese colonial rule at the end of World War II in 1945.
Friday's talks between Red Cross officials at the Diamond Mountain resort were to arrange details of the reunions.

The Koreas last held family reunions in 2015 before relations worsened because of North Korea's accelerated pursuit of nuclear long-range missiles and the hard-line response of Seoul's then-conservative government.

Satellite Images: North Korea Is Expanding Its Weapons Program
    July 3, 20185:02 AM ET

They show North Korea is increasing its ability to produce rocket motors for its nuclear armed missiles. Noel King talks to David Schmerler, analyst at Middlebury Institute for International Studies.

    NOEL KING, HOST:

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to travel to North Korea later this week. He'll continue high-level negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea. President Trump tweeted this morning that those conversations are going well and that there have been, quote, "no rocket launches or nuclear testing in eight months" from North Korea.

But it appears that North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un, is expanding his nation's weapons program despite promises made at June's summit in Singapore. Recent satellite images show that Pyongyang is building out a ballistic missile facility. Earlier, we spoke with David Schmerler. He's a research associate at the Middlebury Institute for International Studies at Monterey (ph).

Kim Jong-un Blew Off Mike Pompeo to Visit a Potato Farm

When Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Pyongyang last weekend, he was supposed to have a one-on-one meeting with Kim Jong-un. But the North Korean leader never showed up during Pompeo’s three-day visit. His top deputy, who took the meeting in Kim’s absence, said his boss was out of town without revealing what was more important than a sit-down with the top U.S. diplomat.
Turns out, potatoes were more important. On Tuesday, North Korean state media published several reports about Kim’s visit to a rural area near the Chinese border where he provided “field guidance” to potato farmers.

State-controlled newspaper accuses US of ‘hatching a criminal plot’ against North Korea

    By Michael Burke - 08/26/18

A state-controlled newspaper in North Korea is accusing the United States of “hatching a criminal plot” and “double dealing” after the U.S. canceled a planned meeting between Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean officials, Reuters reported.
The Rodong Sinmun newspaper said U.S. military units in Japan were attempting to infiltrate Pyongyang, according to the news service.
“Such acts prove that the U.S. is hatching a criminal plot to unleash a war against the DPRK and commit a crime which deserves merciless divine punishment in case the U.S. fails in the scenario of the DPRK’s unjust and brigandish denuclearisation first,” the paper reportedly said.

“We cannot but take a serious note of the double-dealing attitudes of the U.S. as it is busy staging secret drills involving man-killing special units while having a dialogue with a smile on its face,” it added.
The accusations come after President Trump on Friday said he asked Pompeo to put off a visit to North Korea. Trump said on Twitter that he didn’t believe the visit was appropriate because he feels “we are not making sufficient progress with respect to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

In worse case scanerio, even if NK's dictator did not give up nukes but allowed MAGA's largest liberal democrat donor to build a gambling casino there, technically that can be declared pay-for-play "victory":

Casino Mogul Adelson Looking Into Location in North Korea

Sheldon Adelson, a casino mogul and a friend of President Donald Trump, said he hopes to build a casino in North Korea, Casino News Daily reported.
Speaking at a Jerusalem charity event, Adelson, a Korean War veteran, said he hoped Trump could get North and South Korea to end the war so he could return to the country to open a casino there, the Casino News Daily report said.

Adelson was one of the main sponsors of Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, the Casino News report noted.

When North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was in Singapore for the summit with Trump, he visited the Marina Bay Sands, a hotel casino owned by Adelson, Quartz reported.

Trump Has Made Enriching Sheldon Adelson a Top Goal of U.S.-Japan Relations

    By Eric Levitz @EricLevitz

Government of the Adelsons, for the Adelsons, by the Adelsons. Photo: Steve Mack/Getty Images

Early in his primary campaign, Donald Trump gave Americans a bracing account of how politics worked in their country. Asked to justify his past donations to Hillary Clinton and the Democratic Party, Trump explained, “I give to everybody. When they call, I give. And you know what? When I need something from them, two years later, three years later, I call them. They are there for me. And that’s a broken system.”

What Americans needed, then, was a politician who was simply too rich to be bought — a man who could self-fund his campaign, and thus, owe nothing to anyone after Election Day save for ordinary voters. When Trump wasn’t calling for a Muslim ban, touting the size of his wall, or encouraging his supporters to beat protesters, this was the product he sold to the GOP base: the dream of a president that big money couldn’t touch.
Of course, like so many other Trump products, this dream was a sham. The mogul had always funded his big endeavors with other people’s money, and his political venture was no different. He had no genuine beef with the “broken system” of influence peddling — he merely wanted to transition to its “sell side.” So, his campaign accepted $25 million from casino magnate Sheldon Adelson. And when Sheldon called after Inauguration Day, Trump was there for him.
Specifically, the president agreed to make “increasing the global market-share of Sheldon Adelson’s gambling empire” a top-tier priority of American foreign policy toward Japan.

For years before Trump’s election, casino magnates had been eyeing that nation with unrequited lust: Thanks to its stringent anti-casino laws, Japan was one of the last untapped markets for exploiting gambling addicts on planet Earth. One month after Trump painted the Rust Belt red, Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe pushed a bill legalizing casinos through the legislature. The new law allowed for the provision of just three casino licenses in the entire country — guaranteeing their recipients local monopolies.
Thus, in February 2017, Adelson flew to Washington, D.C., for a meeting with the new president, and the Japanese prime minister. And after Adelson pitched the Japanese leader on his business, Trump went in for the close. As ProPublica reports:
Adelson had a potent ally in his quest: the new president of the United States. Following the business breakfast, Abe had a meeting with Trump before boarding Air Force One for a weekend at Mar-a-Lago. The two heads of state dined with Patriots owner Bob Kraft and golfed at Trump National Jupiter Golf Club with the South African golfer Ernie Els. During a meeting at Mar-a-Lago that weekend, Trump raised Adelson’s casino bid to Abe, according to two people briefed on the meeting. The Japanese side was surprised.

“It was totally brought up out of the blue,” according to one of the people briefed on the exchange. “They were a little incredulous that he would be so brazen.” After Trump told Abe he should strongly consider Las Vegas Sands for a license, “Abe didn’t really respond, and said thank you for the information,” this person said.
Adelson still hasn’t secured one of Japan’s coveted casino licenses. But on a recent earnings call he told investors, “[W]e’re in the No. 1 pole position.”

ProPublica goes on to detail Adelson’s influence over other aspects of the Trump administration’s governance, including his transparent role in shaping its (extraordinarily hostile) policies toward the Palestinians. Less well known, though, is Adelson’s success in persuading the EPA to devote a portion of its limited funds to studying his billionaire friend’s mediocre water technology. The Israeli start-up Watergen, owned by Adelson pal Michael Mirilashvili, makes machines that can extract potable water from the air. In his first weeks as EPA director, Scott Pruitt met with Watergen’s executives at Adelson’s behest, and then promptly pushed for the agency to strike a deal with the company that would allow the U.S. to study its technology:
Pruitt, according to one email, asked that staffers explore “on an expedited time frame” whether a deal could be done “without the typical contracting requirements.” Other emails described the matter as “very time sensitive” and having “high Administrator interest.”

A veteran scientist at the agency warned that the “technology has been around for decades,” adding that the agency should not be “focusing on a single vendor, in this case Watergen.” Officials said that Watergen’s technology was not unique, noting there were as many as 70different suppliers on the market with products using the same concept. Notes from a meeting said the agency “does not currently have the expertise or staff to evaluate these technologies.” Agency lawyers “seemed scared” about the arrangement, according to an internal text exchange. The EPA didn’t respond to requests for comment.

    The deal got done.

North Korea issues nuclear threat ahead of high-level talks with US

    By Joshua Berlinger, CNN

(CNN)As the United States and North Korea prepare for another round of high-level talks this week, Pyongyang's increasingly heated rhetoric has analysts worried that the stalemate between the two sides could lead to a breakdown in negotiations.
An official with North Korea's Foreign Ministry issued a veiled threat Friday, warning that Pyongyang could restart "building up nuclear forces" if the US does not ease the crippling sanctions levied on North Korea.
The comments come ahead of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's meeting with his North Korean counterpart, Kim Yong Chol, in New York this week.

North Korea postponed U.S. talks because 'they weren't ready': Haley

    5 Min Read

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - North Korea postponed talks with the United States on Thursday “because they weren’t ready,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said as she urged Pyongyang to implement a June deal between the two countries.

Speaking to reporters before and after a closed-door U.N. Security Council meeting on North Korea sanctions, Haley said it is now North Korea’s turn to act. She also criticized Russia for trying to lift banking restrictions that are intended to curb the Asian nation’s nuclear program.

“There’s no time to stall or no time to delay or try and get past not going through with what was agreed in Singapore,” said Haley, who will step down at the end of the year.
