A passenger was stung by a scorpion aboard a United Airlines flight in a bizarre incident that prompted an emergency response.
The unidentified woman, who was flying from San Francisco to Atlanta, said she was stung by the venomous creature while midair.
She felt a stinging sensation on her leg, prompting her to go to the restroom, TMZ reports. The woman said a live scorpion then dropped out of her pant leg and crawled across the floor before being caught by flight attendants.

Minnesota state government will continue to consent to refugee resettlement, Gov. Tim Walz said Friday, in response to a recent presidential executive order that requires consent from states and counties.

Walz also said he rejects the intent of the executive order and reserves the state's right to challenge its requirements.
“Minnesota has a strong moral tradition of welcoming those who seek refuge,” he wrote. “Our state has always stepped forward to help those who are fleeing desperate situations and need a safe place to call home. In keeping with this proud history, I offer my consent to continue refugee resettlement in the State of Minnesota.”
Minnesota has the country's largest Somali and Karen populations, the second-largest Hmong population and one of the largest Liberian populations — all made up of people who fled their war-torn homelands and their descendants. According to State Department data, Minnesota ranks sixth in the country for refugee arrivals since 2001, accepting over 43,000 individuals.
The city of Minneapolis also responded to Trump's order Friday when its mayor and city council approved a resolution affirming a pledge to be a welcoming city that strongly supports the resettlement of refugees. The resolution also affirmed the city's opposition to the Trump administration's cuts to the number of refugees admitted into the U.S.
Under President Donald Trump's executive order from September, state and local governments must consent to allowing refugee resettlement, giving governors, county boards and city governments the chance to decide how welcoming they will be. Kandiyohi County in west-central Minnesota apparently became the state's first county to consent last week, while others are still waiting to decide.

Trump’s order said the administration was respecting communities that can’t take in refugees. He announced the change at the same time that his administration cut the number of refugees the U.S. would accept from 30,000 this year to 18,000 in 2020, the lowest level since Congress passed the Refugee Act of 1980. Three national resettlement groups have sued to block Trump's order.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced late Friday afternoon that he has joined a coalition of 12 attorneys general — led by California, Illinois and Maryland — in filing an amicus brief in support of that lawsuit. He called the president's order “illegal and immoral.” The brief argues that the order violates the Refugee Act and interferes with each state's prerogative to set statewide policy on resettlement.

As 2019 closes, St. Paul's homicide rate doubles last year's

    http://www.startribune.com/as-2019-c.../?refresh=true

Police understand why, but solutions remain elusive.
By Andy Mannix Star Tribune DECEMBER 15, 2019 — 11:11AM

    LEILA NAVIDI – STAR TRIBUNE
In September, St. Paul officers and investigators responded to a shooting scene at Mendota Street and Fremont Avenue E.
Neighbors in St. Paul’s Battle Creek neighborhood heard a group of men arguing, followed by loud pops and then quieter ones. Police arrived to find spent shell casings scattered across the road, along with what looked like blood.

Across town, Kacey Luke Feiner, a 22-year-old, turned up in the emergency room of Regions Hospital, not breathing and unconscious, riddled with gunshot wounds.

    Kacey Feiner
Within an hour of the first 911 call, Feiner was pronounced dead at the hospital, and St. Paul police had yet another homicide case in what was turning into an unusually bloody year for a community that proudly calls itself America’s “most livable city.” As 2019 closes, St. Paul’s homicide rate has more than doubled that of 2018, reaching its highest level since the mid-1990s.

The killings have instilled fear and unrest in St. Paul’s residents.

“I’m scared for my own kids to be out here,” said Darinda Lumpkins, who lives near the site of one of the shootings.

Politicians and law enforcement officials are debating the path to preventing future violence. Potential solutions include investing in more police officers or technology that would help them find the location of gunfire faster. With no singular cause to the surge, a fitting response is equally difficult to identify.

“Homicides ebb and flow,” said Steve Linders, spokesman for St. Paul police, “and we’re in a year where they’ve spiked dramatically.”

Some of the shootings appear random, such as the case of Javier Sanmiguel, who heard a car crash outside his house and rushed to help. Police say the driver started shooting erratically from the back of his banged-up car and a bullet caught the Good Samaritan in the head.

But most of the killings derive from one or more of three circumstances, said Linders: drug deals, social media beefs that materialize into street fights, and shootings between gang rivals.

A Star Tribune analysis of 2019 homicides in St. Paul found:

    • The overwhelming majority — all but three — of the victims died from wounds inflicted by firearms, making 2019 the city’s most deadly year for gun violence ever. Most of the shootings occurred in the streets or in cars.

    • The median age for known suspects and victims is 27. Though St. Paul is predominantly white and 50% female, the overwhelming majority of victims were men of color, most commonly black.

    • More than half the killings have so far resulted in either murder or manslaughter charges.

    • Other metrics of violent crime have dropped in St. Paul from this time last year, including robbery, aggravated assault and rape.

After finding Kacey Feiner, police learned he’d been feuding with a member of EBK — “Every Body Killa” — via text just before the shooting. Police say Feiner, who had recently been released from prison for his role in a 2015 drive-by shooting, belonged to the rival Ham Crazy gang. They went looking for the EBK member, who called himself “Dodo Man.”

    A new trend

At a community meeting last month to discuss ways to stop the violence, Mayor Melvin Carter told of being at a conference in Washington, D.C., and learning St. Paul had surpassed 25 homicides for the year. Carter said other mayors were envious of what they perceived as a low count.

“It humbles me to be in a community that is fundamentally safe compared to a lot of other cities,” he told the crowd. Carter also said the city had “lost too many lives” in 2019 and needed a new approach to violent crime.

As a raw count, St. Paul’s 30 homicides are dwarfed by most major cities. However, the count has doubled from 15 last year. And calculated as a rate — or one homicide per 100,000 residents — St. Paul’s 2019 far exceeds year-end 2018 rates for Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City. The homicide rate is barely trailing Minneapolis, the historically more violent of the Twin Cities. Yet it’s less than half of Cleveland’s 2018 rate and about one-third of Kansas City’s.

Every city is different for reasons beyond just population, and comparing violent crime by community comes with caveats, said Ronal Serpas, a former New Orleans police superintendent who teaches criminology at Loyola University.

Going from 15 to 30 killings in a year is significant, he said.

“That’s a headline, that’s twice as many murders. There’s no way to get around that.” But it’s not unheard of, said Serpas, and a one-year surge doesn’t guarantee St. Paul will continue to be more violent next year.

Serpas said the killings here appear to mirror a national trend of violent crime caused by loosely affiliated gangs with itchy trigger fingers. “That is incredibly common across the country,” he said. “Gangs are not nearly as structured, they don’t resemble Bloods and Crips in the way they used to. Now, that’s a bad thing for a number of reasons.”

Among them: The members are often “driven by a moment of anger and irrationality” that may incite them to shoot one another over what seem like trivial motives.

    ‘Let’s kill each other’

    Michael C. Garland
Police identified “Dodo Man” as 19-year-old Michael Cordell Garland.

Garland has since been charged with second-degree murder, to which he pleaded not guilty.

According to the criminal complaint, Garland and Feiner had been in an argument over a firearm. Over two hours of texting that night, they planned to settle the score.

“Shoot it out, fight, Wah Chu tryna do shorty,” texted Feiner, according to the charges.

Garland replied that he couldn’t fight because he’d injured his arm.

But Feiner insisted. “We gonna bump heads,” he said.

“Let’s kill each other,” Garland replied.

They decided to meet on Glenridge Avenue in Battle Creek. “Pull up in silence,” wrote Feiner.

The 911 calls started coming in nine minutes after the last text. Neighbors heard the shots and saw Feiner on the ground. One witness reported seeing the shooter hop into a vehicle and drive off as a man opened fire on his car. A tan vehicle drove up and a group loaded in Feiner, apparently to take him to the hospital. After the shooting, police spoke with another EBK member who said he’d been with Garland after the shooting. Garland told him that Feiner was the first to draw a gun, according to charges. “I just tweaked,” Garland told him.

NH is roughly six times the population of St. Paul.

    It is 96% white.

The whole state had 21 murders for the whole year of 2018.

Beginning Jan. 2, airmen at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska, will no longer be able to carry their personal firearms on base, even if they lock them up in their cars first.
Col. Gavin Marks, commander of Offutt's 55th Wing, issued the change, which the base announced in a Facebook post Monday.
"The current policy, which authorizes registered Department of Defense ID card holders with a Nebraska Concealed Handgun License (CHL) and holders of reciprocating state concealed carry license (CCL) to transport and secure privately-owned handguns in privately-owned vehicles within the base, will no longer be valid," the Facebook post reads. "This policy change comes as a result of the commander's initial review of the Offutt AFB Integrated Defense and Antiterrorism Plan, a requirement to be completed within 120 days of assuming command."
Hansen said in a statement that the policy change was "an internal decision by the commander in consultation with multiple base agencies."
Marks "has not made any recommendations to other wing commanders regarding their installation security processes," he added.

Hundreds of 737 Max jets are sitting, grounded, as Boeing awaits approval from aviation regulators for the troubled plane to return to flight. But now, the company has discovered yet another potential hurdle.
The plane was grounded worldwide in March after two crashes that killed 346 people. The company determined a software fix was likely to correct the issue with the automatic safety feature that caused the crashes.
However, as part of a December audit of the plane’s safety ordered by the US Federal Aviation Administration, Boeing found “previously unreported concerns” with wiring in the 737 Max, according to a report earlier Sunday from the New York Times. The company informed the FAA last month that it is looking into whether two sections of wiring that control the tail of the plane are too close together and could cause a short circuit — and potentially a crash, if pilots did not react appropriately -— the Times reported, citing a senior Boeing engineer and three people familiar with the matter.
A Boeing spokesperson confirmed the report to CNN Business on Sunday, saying the issue was identified as part of a “rigorous process” to ensure the plane’s safety.
“Our highest priority is ensuring the 737 Max meets all safety and regulatory requirements before it returns to service,” the spokesperson said. “We are working closely with the FAA and other regulators on a robust and thorough certification process to ensure a safe and compliant design.”
The spokesperson said it “would be premature to speculate” whether the discovery will lead to new design changes for the plane, or further extend the timeline for its recertification.

Plane carrying 107 passengers slidesoff taxiway at Wisconsin's Austin Straubel airport

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/trave...es/2818237001/

ASHWAUBENON, Wisconsin – More than 100 passengers had to be booked on another flight Saturday morning after the plane they were on slid off the taxiway at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport.

About 6:15 a.m. Saturday, the Delta aircraft carrying 107 passengers to Atlanta slid off the taxiway as it was making its way from the terminal to the runway for takeoff, airport director Marty Piette said. No one was injured, and there was no damage to the aircraft.

The passengers were bused back to the terminal to make other flight arrangements. No other flights were canceled Saturday, Piette said.

Conditions were icy at the time, but Piette said he can't be sure if that's what caused the plane to slide off the taxiway. He said airport staff were aware of the icy conditions and treated the taxiway with sand and alerted pilots of the conditions.

"From an airport standpoint, we do everything we can to make conditions as good as they can be," Piette said, adding that planes sliding off runways is not something that happens very often.

Police: Unruly Passenger on United Flight Beats Flight Attendant

    https://www.breitbart.com/crime/2020...ght-attendant/

    KATHERINE RODRIGUEZ 13 Jan 2020

An unruly passenger headed from Dulles International Airport in Virginia to Newark, New Jersey, on Thursday barreled into a cockpit door and began beating a flight attendant mid-flight, police said.

“This guy was in a full sprint, right up to the cockpit, hits the cockpit, starts banging on it,” Mike Egbert, one of the witnesses, told WNBC about the ordeal he went through while traveling aboard United Express Flight 4965.

The man, later identified by the police as 28-year-old Matthew Dingley, began beating up a flight attendant who tried to stop him, News 12 New Jersey reported.

At that moment, Egbert and eight other passengers tried to restrain Dingley for the rest of the flight.

After the flight landed in Newark shortly after 9 p.m., Port Authority Police officers boarded the flight on the ground to arrest Dingley, NJ.com reported.

Dingley then charged at the police officers, knocking them down the steps onto the airport tarmac. One officer broke four of his ribs while five other officers also suffered injuries. All of the officers and the flight attendant are expected to recover from their injuries.

A backup team of other officers came in to arrest Dingley, who faces multiple charges. Dingley faces charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, criminal trespassing, and interfering with transportation.

WNBC reported that the 28-year-old had previous run-ins with law enforcement before his Thursday arrest, including a 2016 arrest for leading the police on a chase in North Carolina. He was also convicted of DWI in New York in 2017.

Maintenance crews on Thursday were inspecting a United Airlines jetliner that returned to New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport after it experienced engine trouble and flames were seen near a wing.
Flight 1871 was headed to Los Angeles with 168 passengers and six crew members on Wednesday night when the problem occurred, airline spokesman Charles Hobart said.
It was not clear what went wrong, but it was “an unsettling experience for some of our customers,” Hobart said.
Video showed flames soon after the Boeing 757 had taken off.
A passenger told WABC-TV that it appeared fire was coming from an engine.

An airline pilot was caught on hidden camera vandalizing a Florida airport with graffiti that included racial slurs and slogans both supporting and opposing President Trump, according to authorities.
James Dees, 53, was released on bond from a Leon County jail around 1pm on Friday after he was arrested and charged with nine counts of criminal mischief.
Dees, a former pilot with Delta subsidiary Endeavor Air, is said to have admitted to authorities that he wrote racial slurs, including '#MAGA=No N*****S=NO SP**S,' multiple times on the walls of airport bathrooms and the parking lot elevator at Tallahassee International Airport.
In December 2018, local police first received reports of graffiti in the men's restrooms as well as inside an elevator near the front entrance and on some parked cars, according to WCTV-TV.
Over the course of the next year, more graffiti kept appearing, including '#MAGA,' 'TRUMP4EVER,' 'Send them ALL back,' and other racial slurs which were found in the stalls of the men's restrooms and other locations.

Police charged Dees with nine counts of criminal mischief. The total damage from the graffiti is estimated to be less than $200.
Endeavor released a statement to WCTV saying that Dees was no longer employed by the airline.
'These actions in no way reflect the values of Endeavor Air and this individual is no longer employed by the airline,' the company said.
