Russian frigates in Mediterranean on standby over Syria threat

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russian military vessels with Kalibr cruise missiles would be on permanent standby in the Mediterranean to counter what he said was the terrorist threat in Syria. The deployment shows how Russia has increased its military presence in the Middle East since it launched an intervention in Syria in 2015, turning the tide of the civil war in favor of its close ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Russia has in the past fired Kalibr cruise missiles from frigates and submarines stationed in the Mediterranean Sea at militant targets to support Syrian army offensives.
Putin on Wednesday said only warships armed with Kalibr missiles would be on permanent standby, and not submarines.
Announcing the deployment while addressing the Russian high military command at a meeting in the Black Sea city of Sochi, Putin said it was "due to the remaining terrorist threat in Syria."

Vladimir Putin announces Russian withdrawal from Syria during visit to airbase

Vladimir Putin has said Russia will withdraw the bulk of its forces from Syria following the "successful intervention" in the conflict there.

The announcement comes after the defence ministry said last week that Russia had “completely liberated” Syria from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil), despite reports that the terrorist group still controls some remote territory there.

Speaking to soldiers at Russia's Khmeimim airbase during his first trip to Syria, where he was welcomed by Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, Mr Putin said he was ordering the defence minister and head of the general staff to begin withdrawing Russian forces to their home bases.

Because you think nothing has changed in Syria since then?

Syrian military seizes key swath of land in country's center

    BEIRUT
Syria's military said Wednesday it has restored government control over a large area in central Syria, securing a power station, a refinery and a cement factory after uprooting the armed opposition.

With the latest military victory, Syrian government forces secure roads between the country's three main cities — Damascus, Aleppo and Homs — for the first time since the civil war began in 2011.

The surrender in northern Homs and southern Hama adds to what has been described as one of the largest population shifts in Syria since the conflict began.

Since March, around 200,000 people were forced to relocate to other parts of the country as part of surrender deals after crippling sieges and bombardment by government forces, according to the U.N., which says the practice amounts to forced displacement.

Russia Says Missile Ships Will Stay Near Syria, Challenging U.S. in Middle East and Europe

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Wednesday that warships armed with advanced cruise missiles would be permanently deployed near Syria in the Mediterranean, where rival U.S. military vessels also operate.

Putin made the remarks during a gathering of top military brass, defense industry leaders and economic officials in the city of Sochi. The Russian leader touted his navy's role in maintaining national security and enforcing Moscow's interests abroad, especially in Syria, where Russian warships have helped Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Iranian allies battle rebels and jihadis attempting to overthrow the Syrian government.

"I will especially note the efficient and coordinated actions of the crews of our ships and submarines during the military operation in Syria. The cruise missile attacks and the effective work of the carrier aviation dealt a serious blow to the terrorists, destroying important infrastructure facilities," Putin said. "The accomplishment of these and other complicated and important tasks was largely possible due to the high combat and technical readiness of the navy."

"The build-up of the navy's combat potential and the practice of long-distance naval campaigns, exercises and maneuvers should certainly continue," he added. "This yearís plan includes 102 expeditions of ships and submarines. At the same time, with the continuing threat of attacks by international terrorists in Syria in the Mediterranean Sea, our ships armed with Kalibr cruise missiles will be on a constant military watch."

To me, "forced displacement" would be better described as "mercy" considering those that those relocated (not counting family members) were those with the most violent ideology and were those rejecting any reconciliation/peace offer that would have allow them to remain in the area.
